5 Most OVERRATED Supplements (WASTE OF CASH!)

  • Fitness supplements can be a tricky topic. While there are a select few bodybuilding supplements to build muscle and improve health/performance (such as protein powders, multivitamins, fish oil, pre-workout and creatine), the true list of supplements that work is quite minimal and the vast majority of so called "muscle building supplements" are simply a waste of money. In today's video I'll be going over a list of 5 overrated supplements you probably don't need. Not all of these are necessarily "supplement scams" (though a few are), but they're definitely way over hyped for what they are. If you want to gain muscle, lose fat and increase strength while saving money, this is definitely a video you want to watch.

      Sean, can you do a video clarifying Protein Utilization, Efficiency, or Bio-availability of Whey Protein versus other protein sources?. I am asking because there is a product called "Perfect Aminos" that claims the perfect ratio or balance of muscle-building amino acids where 100% is utilized for muscle growth. They have a table showing Whey as only 18% Utilized so therefore you need their product. They show eggs at 48% and meat, fish, chicken at 32% of protein utilized. But I have found information about Net Protein Utilization (NPU) Bio-Availability (BV) , and Protein Digestibility Corrected Amino Acid Score (PDCAAS), which all say that Eggs and Whey are 100% efficient. Thanks

      I would like to show this video to my sports nutrition class. We just covered this exact content last week. You are extremely accurate on the studies and how the supplements work or don't. As much as I bash social media in the class, this video would be great fro them to see that real information is available.

      He's probably reptilian :D but more seriously speaking, Sean isn't entertaining. I know, it may sound like something bad but I can watch coach G. if I look for entertainment. Sean is the guy who compresses facts into short YT clips creating a small pill which we could call "a supplement of knowledge". I don't watch Sean for the same reason as I do watch other YT fitness people. Sure, I can get solid portion of knowledge from other influencers, too but it's like with a candy wrapped in fancy wrapper. It takes longer to unwrap it than to eat it :D Sometimes I just want that candy without any wrapper :) This is what I get when I watch Sean's videos. Also, the way he advertises his products is different. He never claims his products are the best of the best and shove them down one's throat. He is quite unique creator in fitness industry.

    Mass/weight gainers are one of the worst supplements IMO as they’re absurdly calorie dense & cause people to gain unnecessary excess bodyfat more than anything else. In most cases, simply increasing protein intake, eating a healthier balanced diet, & working harder & smarter in the gym are the simplest fixes that will net the best results.

    I think BCAA's do kinda make sense for some people (vegetarians or vegans mostly) but yeah it's insane to me that so many people fall for this whole marketing scheme to make them the n°1 supplement

    • @andrewciricillo9726
      @andrewciricillo9726 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      BCAA's don't work as well as EAA's. imagine you're building a roof on four pillars (made of bricks) one pillar is short of bricks, that limits how high you can put the roof. BCAA's don't offer the full spectrum of essential amino acids, and so they limit muscle protein synthesis. Whether EAA's are a good supplement, or you should just have a fast digesting protein powder before or during the workout is another story. Personally I like EAA's bc even if they do nothing if you're in a fed state, or very little, compared to sports drinks (mio) or something, they're super cheap per serving, and the servings are huge (almost a litre) Helps me drink more water during the workout.

    • @Maniacu666
      @Maniacu666 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@andrewciricillo9726 Literally why I use EAA over BCAA... The amount of water I drink in workouts is higher and also gives a different taste. Then again I could get a low / 0 calorie sweetener or flavor to put in the water, but the EAA will add some positives as well unlike the flavors... And as you said, you can get em quite cheap so, why not use them. They're not detrimental unless you consume a sh*tload of them for no particular reason

    • @jeffberridge176
      @jeffberridge176 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@andrewciricillo9726 I did believe EAAs were a smart choice because of their ability to digest quickly and provide your muscles with the amino acids they need immediately… until I later learned that you are perfectly fine consuming your protein throughout the day, and as long as you’ve consumed the recommended amount for your size, muscle synthesis will occur as desired. So… a good supplement if you had a busy day without much food in general. I take them because I have a light breakfast and by the time I hit the gym in the evening, I’m probably only sitting at about half my daily protein intake, and EAAs (hopefully) prevent muscle breakdown until I’m able to consume my remaining protein later on .

    Sean would you be able to look into White Kidney Bean Extract as a supplement? It essentially lowers absorption of carbs, thus lowering how many calories you get from them. Its pretty well-researched and doesnt have bad side effects. Obviously it’s a modest effect and maybe decreases daily calories by 200 or so but it might help in a high carb calorie deficit phase. I’ve just not heard many reputable people mention them so I’m wondering what your thoughts are!

    • @FirstLast-pt7bm
      @FirstLast-pt7bm 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Its an extract? Why not eat the kidney beans directly. The fiber in it will slow the absorption of carbohydrates, the protein will help build your muscles and the antioxidants and minerals also help with general body function. Also slowing the absorption of calories dont decrease the amount of calories consumed

    • @saraashkir5793
      @saraashkir5793 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@FirstLast-pt7bm because you’d have to eat a lot more kidney beans than usual to match the effect of the extract. The 200 calories a day or so is from taking the extract 2-3 times before meals. Of course eating whole food has much more benefits than supplementation but supplements help in certain situations. This could help someone lose fat just a little bit faster without having to increase activity/eat less. And it doesn’t SLOW carb absorption, it literally decreases it overall. So (totally arbitrary numbers here), if you eat 50g of carbs without the extract, your body takes in all the energy and nutrients from all 50 grams. If you take the extract though, it might only take 35 grams and the other 15 grams pass through your bowels without being absorbed. So thats 15g of carbs that you didnt get the calories from

    • @saraashkir5793
      @saraashkir5793 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Id say keep training your triceps unilaterally (one side at a time), and determine the weight and rep range based on your weaker side. Your right side definitely won’t be pushed hard enough during this, but that’s ok because youre trying to equalize their strength. 4-5 reps difference in each side isn’t that big to be honest, you should be able to equalize each side within a few weeks (if not quicker) of progressive overload. Once you feel both your right and left sides are working close to failure to the same level, then youll be at the same strength.

    Hey Sean, I'm vegan and generally have a hard time fitting in enough protein in my diet (especially considering some plant-based protein sources are incomplete and I can't really be bothered meal-planning around complementing protein sources very precisely). I do supplement with a regular protein-blend but I just never quite hit my macros with 1 shake and really don't want to drink more than that, I think they just taste disgusting and the consistency isn't any better. So I picked up the habbit of consuming EAAs during training (where I especially don't want to drink a a protein shake) and maybe another serving spread out over the day. Any opinion on this use of EAAs? I feel like you've been bashing them a lot but I don't really see how EAAs are so much worse than protein powder, they cost about 10-15% more for me and have some carbs, but I've been doing this for a while and haven't gained a significant amount of fat and am willing to pay a tiny bit extra for not having to force something down my throat. Am I missing anything here?
    edit; Since a lot of people have made (mostly great!) reccomendations about a healthy and protein-rich vegan diet, I'd like to add that I feel confident in my nutrition knowledge in general, but just have a naturally low appetite and am getting to a point where I would have to eat extra meals when not hungry or put additional protein sources in meals where I don't think they would generally fit in. So what I'm wondering is specifically if there is any downsides to EAAs other than having extra carbs & being a bit pricier than regular protein powder. Of course the carbs add up if you try to supplement ~40g of protein, but what I'm looking for is usually just another 10-20g, and those extra 150-300 calories just don't really matter for me at this point.

      If I may add my perspective here, I think that's the
      unavoidable issue with vegan diets. Especially if one is considering cutting while keeping a high amount of proteins to hold on to muscles.
      If you're vegan you will basically have to eat the same high protein legumes over and over and in relatively high amounts, soy products, and protein powders. It is just how it is.
      Supplementing with EAAs while being vegan makes sense, so that one doesn't have to "make up" with extra protein to have the same anabolic effect.
      But I'd say on the other hand to just not stress it that much.
      If you're making progress in the gym you're fine, one shouldn't listen to the supplement industry recommendations

    Coconut water or just plain coffee is far better than any pre work out, in my opinion. As for supplements, I think nobody needs them as long as they have a well-rounded diet. Of course, I'm talking about average gym-goers, not pro athletes

      Well-rounded diet does not apply to creatine tho, isnt 5g of creatine like 1.5kgs of meat lol

    I think beta alanine actually showed benefits in later sets though, even without super high rep sets. Possibly cardio as well.

      Not that I've seen but I could be wrong. Maybe negligible effects but I don't personally find the ROI to be good for me

    Dude, massive props for mentioning the benefits of fibre! I don’t think enough bodybuilders consider it. Don’t skip the soluble and insoluble fibres! Don’t get colon cancer!

    Great vids Sean. When you first started at the gym and saw all those jacked people in the dumb bell section, did you have any insecurity going over there, and if so, how did you overcome it?

    • @A4000
      @A4000 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Stop comparing yourself to other people, man. Just walk over and grab your weights and then do your sets. Look straight ahead in the mirror and focus on yourself and only worry about being bigger than you were last time. All those jacked guys at the gym didn't get big by looking at other people. You can do it, just go in and do the damn thing.

    Damn you look so much older in your dirty bulk days. It just shows how a proper diet just makes you look better overall.

    Great video and from my 25 years training and passing out many of the latest and greatest supplements I totally agree. I do like to sip EAA's to sip at work and during my workouts as I have an incredibly physical job and train often. I Hope many newbies find your channel brother, you're one of the best! Thanks.
