- The Sound Couple heads off to a local city park for music in the park! The music was great and from the technical side...we finally nailed down our bad XLR cable on the drum snake. This has been an issue that has plagued us for awhile and when working with different bands, it can be more difficult to identify intermittent issues.
The crowd enjoyed the music and The Sound Couple enjoyed a gig close to home!

glad to see you included how you were packing everything afterwards. People usually don't have much respect for the discipline it takes for technicians to quickly pack out and ensure everything is intact after a program

As usual sounding great. I love (in some other videos) when you have a problem you always try and find a solution on the spot....and you learn from that situation every time.
You bring up a very good point....every gig involves some sort of problem solving. It is important for us to demonstrate these concepts as there is no such thing as perfect circumstances. All decisions are based on risk, time, budget, aesthetics, effort, resources, etc.
It is such a blessing to see people like you on the road doing what you love to do I just hope one day God could bless me to be like that looking forward towards the future I have hope now keep doing what you're doing and keep making videos and kiss me the inspiration I need to get up and do what I love to do thank you so much God bless you both

So glad to see the new in-ear rig working to make a good band even better. I am very impressed with the way Bart put this rig together to make it as easy as possible for the band to use in the gigs to come. Thanks Dean! The band is settling in with them really well and they are very happy with the system. I was a bit concerned going with so many wired packs, but it really hasn't been an issue that I can tell. Everyone runs their own XLR cables for their lines and it all goes very smooth.

I highly recommend the Rat sound tools XLR sniffer sender. You can test the XLR cable in question without removing it from the snake.... just apply phantom power at the console and three green LEDs on the sniffer will tell you that the whole entire cable run is wired correctly. Anything other than three green LEDs, replace or fix the cable.
One step ahead of you! That is an awesome tool and helped us ultimately decide to change out that line.

Hi Team. Another impressive show. I know I'm watching your posts a year on, but they are still interesting. I just finished watching the "Fire Station" gig with the 2 flatbed trailers & big light show. You mentioned scratching the subs the year before when placed under the trailer. Any damage to gear, especially new, is painful. When setting up on concrete, asphalt, etc we'd placed the subs on painted plywood sheets to reduce scratching etc & if we had a mix of old and new gear, the oldest boxes went on the bottom of the stack.
Plywood is a great idea! The sub had only a minor scratch....our 18sAI's have been relegated to the bottom class...but they are still nice and want to take care of them but as we know, things can happen and if it does we choose it to the them.
I'm really tired just watching you guys work, and I can feel the bug bites! Props for your hard work - the band sounded great. Nice event - lots of people. I miss getting out there and performing. This is very motivating. Thank you as always for making these videos.

Great to see the new IEM rig working well for the band. I'm loving your approach with testing the power before plugging in equipment; I do the same. I always inspect and test power cables that I'm unfamiliar with before plugging anything in...some people turn up with some really dodgy crap at times.

My girl and I are you two!!! Would love to get into IEM's as we are having to deal with wedges. Oh how I wish I was strong enough to lift my QSC Line Arrays by myself. At 70 I ain't got the strength I used to have, lol. Sound was great, and I LOVE that group!! Rock On!
I’m astounded at at all the “sound couples” out there! I can only hope we would be able to still do this at 70! Although.. no shame in coming up with creative devices to get the job done…. We used to haul around a hydraulic lift cart because Stacy is too short and couldn’t lift our tall EAW cabinets!

Fun to watch. The band has a pro sound and that’s a great set they chose. You made the sound engineering look too easy. That’s a very nice rig. I use PreSonus hardware and software. Made to work together and battle ready. I liked seeing you sound checking from behind the audience. Fine tuning. That’s a great feature.
Thanks! If you watch our videos, you will see that we almost always use a tablet/iPad to mix from. The advantages of being free to roam are endless....it's definitely hard for me to sit behind a console to mix from one perspective. I believe tablet mixing has made our mixes better overall.
When you do the sound for an event, you're the first one here and the last one to leave. I'm kind'a used to it, been doing it for many, many years.

We are not able to blow the roof off, but we consistently get good results frequently at the maximum I am willing to push the system. So, I would say we are @ 90% + for many outdoor gigs, and we haven't had one issue with the cabinets. That is a good return on resource management as most gigs done right from our van!

I see a lot of xlr connections that can be redused. The more xlr connections per channel the more issue it becomes to bad signals. I also might have seen tha a DI box was put on top of the bas amplefire. I always did put those on the ground to avoid less magnetic interferens. If a bas amplifier has a direct out, i always used that connection. Because all the frequensies are in there. Always keep the power lines away as far as possible from the xlr cabels this because of magnetic interferenses. Then again.... a great sound starts with the basic sound of the instrument it self. Aspecially with drums. Close miking on drums is a must have. Nice Presonos systeem :) I learned actively over 40 years and now stil learning on the side line.

Yes amps with built-in direct boxes are quite nice if you're allowed to use them. Do make sure you turn phantom power off on that channel as at one point in time some manufacturers skipped and the output could be blown up.
I've not heard of this DI box on top of an amp magnetic interference issue before. I could see with cheaper poorly shielded direct boxes and possibly tube/ Poor quality amps this might be an issue.

Low output on an XLR cable usually means one of the conductors broke, but the cable can still be able to pass part of the signal it's just not adding the two differential signals together to boost it back up. Had one of those one time and I investigated.
We checked the cable and it tested fine, so we just replaced it. We haven't had any of these issues since!

Try reversing the top stacked sub and invert the phase for a cardioid bass rejection on stage for the band. You'll still get 6db summation out front & -15 db reduction on stage of bass.
We have considered trying a cardioid configuration....we may at some point in the future!

Hi guys, I'm an Italian colleague of yours and I really envy the relaxed atmosphere in which you work, I want to come to work in the States!!
Is it the Sound Couple that is relaxed or the events are? We would be interested if you have an example of how it's different. This particular event was pretty laid back, but not all of them!
@@thesoundcouple Where we live, in the north of Italy, life is already quite hectic and people are always stressed, not even when they should be able to relax. We technicians are constantly under pressure, especially in the summer when there are many events and concerts. I'd like to work in a more human and continuous reality, without crazy work peaks and then maybe long periods of doing nothing...
In Minnesota, we definitely have the slow time in the winter, if you can get used to snow and cold!

Oh yeah there was this one venue I was at, band had their own equipment it was a fire department festival thing and they had a trailer mostly enclosed and a nice heavy extension going out to a panel mounted in the trailer. I got there early and was scoping things out and I turned the connection upside down and water came out of the 30 amp connector! unfortunately we had to run our own extension cord as for some reason it no longer had power after that? I think there was a loose connection and most definitely some corrosion. Yes I don't necessarily think this was installed by an electrician and more like an individual within the department who knew a little.
That’s why production companies need to be “boy scouts” always prepared with a plan B!

Which ties in with the video from Adam Savage which I saw and I have personally experienced this. He talked about his production company leaving things as or better to the point of repairing things they didn't break sometimes and because of that the first impressions made returning impressions.
So bringing a trash bag and picking up after the band really does go a long way.
In a situation like that run a GFI on everything. You can't be too careful when it comes to safety, for both people and the equipment. If there's the slightest chance of rain or water, don't mess around, you can save the equipment, or more importantly keep someone from getting hurt.
I've never used in-line ones built in to a cord like in the video, but I've had bad experiences with ones built in to plugs. They're usually finnicky and trip for seemingly no reason at all. We have our own 220 box that my Master Electrician friend made for us (almost identical to the one in the video). Ours has a filter on it though (looks like a small breaker), so those things combined with the fact that (aside from the drummer's wired ears) we use all Wireless. Wireless Mics, Wireless In-Ears, Wireless Guitars. Never had an issue, so we just let er buck!
It does surprise how many times we run into non-GFI power outdoors and that is why we carry our own. I have heard of shows being shutdown because they are lacking but that was usually because they were inspected....we have never been inspected.
@@thesoundcouple one of the things that impresses me is that you carry those and the power tester. I also made some covers for my subs after clearing off a case of drinks a couple weeks ago. I like that you’re humble and learn from the community as well as teach from the lessons you’ve learned. You do the gigs the majority of us do. I’ve learned a ton from Dave Rat, but he’s on another level. Keep up the great videos!

@@djjazzyjeff1232 well they do trip for a reason but what that reason is is a whole another question and can it be figured out in time for the show. They measure the power going out on the hot and returning on the neutral if there's an in balance the trip. If there's anything of bad quality downstream, if there's moisture between connections, long cable runs, if they are really old, GFCI's are supposed to be tested monthly but nobody does that. So I rather bring ones of a known good state. I follow a lot of European electricians and well they have whole house GFCI (RCD) protection and the practices to diagnose faults since unless they're running a split board will knock everything in the house out. Although the new trend is individual circuit protection some thing that's a long time coming at this point and probably should've been done long time ago. Just imagine dropping something in the bath and having every light in the house go out! Or some moisture in an outlet on that wall that's damp....
Shut down for failing inspection that's interesting I wonder if that's some local regulation? NEC has a lot of leeway for temporary set ups for both good and bad.

Edit: Hey Bart I have a question, which speaker poles did you choose and do you know how long they are? I got the shortest ones I could find and cut them off once and I still feel like they're too long sometimes. Good news is my Drummer is 6'6" so that comes in real handy for putting up PA lol. He can do thinks from the ground that normally takes a ladder for the rest of us average height fellows lol.

I have used distro’s like that in the past. I am not an electrician, but I think code says if it is used outdoors the outlets have to be GFCI’s. I know GFCI’s get a bad rap in the past, I think they are better now. You are definitely doing the correct thing using portable GFCI, I have to agree I think I would put them on everything. You can not be too safe.
Yea.. that Floor tom sounds BAD!! As a drummer I can not believe he is not going to work on the tuning of it. IDK you might try recording, then send the drum tracks so he can hear how it sounds through the microphone. Maybe it is a case where it sounds ok a few feet away, but not so much an inch away where the mic. is.

Thanks Bill - all points well made. Our portable GFI's were expensive (can't imagine what they would cost now), but they haven't failed us either and the provide us with assurance we can add GFI to any location and at least cover ourselves. Unfortunately, we have experienced issues with other GFI outlets....it seem like not all are created equal!
The NEC requires all outdoor outlets and wet locations to have a GFCI however for temporary set up it's a little bit more up to the user a gray area. However OSHA for construction sites requires them. They do indeed work I was crawling through a crawlspace that was I wanna see 7 feet high too high to be plastic crawlspace but legally not a basement. I was dragging a cord through for a sump pump to drain and dropped the end in the drink... Well I was standing on the edge of the concrete. The film and television industry has certainly been skeptical and has a lot of old equipment but I believe they are slowly transitioning around as well. However that usually comes with a qualified professionals running stuff, With the sane sense to turn stuff off.
A lot can be done and made safer simply with good cable management. Like keeping ends above ground so if water does pool do you have some time to kill power.
I didn't counter one really old GFCI in an RV where after running 100ft of cord out to my van for video file management for a film I had issues with it tripping due to the more than normal cable acting as an i antenna picking up interference. The solution was to run another hundred feet of cord to a different outlet and then dig through the cru RV until I found the GFCI.... as that tripped every outlet in the thing and they were short on supply otherwise.

When you pulled the sub out from the middle of the stage, it rested where you should actually place it. Under the stage is behind the others causing a few millisecond delay to the others increasing your chances of increasing lobing and power alleys. I presume you had that one there to minimize power alleys. Get prediction software and see what’s happening.
We have some delay settings on the AI sub we can consider using and you got me thinking there may be some quick things we can do to try different settings. Like a lot of our gigs, time is always a consideration and we can't make every gig a perfect world situation.

I'LL LOVE TO HAVE A SOUND FROM YOU GUYS
I would air on the same precautions using GFCI's for the mains you don't really want those to trip. I use a UPS for my mix rig so if it trips it's not as big of a deal but it also shouldn't trip. For anything on stage I like to have a master kill switch for wet venues that kills everything except the PA basically anything musician related, I know my equipment I don't know there's. And this allows for quick isolation as well as a GFCI. Keep cables up, especially the connections moisture will get in and cause tripping and the worst kind nuisance. The electrical panel as long as there's no direct splashing should be OK although technically it's not rated for outdoor use but other than the cover design there's not that much difference unless you go full sealed case. Technically they should have GFCI's on that but in some ways I prefer having access to non protected circuits and bring my own known good protection. That said I did run into an issue with a food truck that needed 240V the equipment that was rented for us was not directly standard… So the outlet that was supplied was not something commonly used on the spider boxes so this left them using a custom two extension cord to 240v cable which is not standard and out of the 5 extension cords that were brought one of them was miss wired and wouldn't you know it that was one of the two that was used. Yeah guess what breaker tripped direct short hot neutral. However because there's 2 paths for the neutral this set up will not work on GFCI's.... For variously probably good reasons. NEC requires all outdoor outlets to be GFCI and there is some leeway with temporary set ups for events and things, since it's not a permanent installation.
I picked up a lot of this over the years mostly because I used to go to a church that would hold a clambake every year… Every year the day they picked was the day with torrential downpours. nobody got hurt when we did set up the whole band.
It's been a while since I last looked it up, the film and television industry has slowly embrace things and one of those is a lot of old equipment that doesn't have GFCI's and Untrust but it's coming around. I know OSHA requires GFCI protection on worksites but there's also a lot of Jenkee power on work sites.
As far as that distribution panel goes I will give that a B+, it probably should have rain resistant outdoor covers over the outlets but those will just get broken off anyway so. They could add a plastic flap over the whole thing I've seen that done.
As the industry has moved to powered monitors and speakers I still like the passive ones it's a whole lot less cabling and it keeps the electrical power centralized in the rack.

@@thesoundcouple same. I run across videos online and I think let me add my little information that popped into my mind for others. I cross between a lot of different industries like electrical, audio, video, film, TV, computers, IT, construction so I get to see a lot of stuff between different things. Then I walk into venues and save the day, I went to a big conference in Galveston Texas one year the sound guy was trying to control the BIG Yamaha mixer with a tablet pre-iPad and was having network errors and with the bad cell service phone a friend was off the table. Not only did I get to hang out with him for the conference I also managed to get the event only Wi-Fi password, and I almost got to run lights one night.
It’s good to use your own GFIC. One issue is that the more they are tripped, the weaker they become and can trip easy. With using your own, you know what they’ve been through.
@@JR-us3cq True good point. Reminds me of the incident. I plugged into an outlet on the outside of an RV ran 200 feet of extension cord.... Guess what bloody happened.... turns out there's a GFCI in the RV (where?) and all the outlets are on one circuit!
Took me a half an hour to an hour to figure out where they hid the darn thing. After that I started running to the second of only two other outlets, and not the one for the all important coffee maker on set. I was DIT on a film set I would pull my van in the morning set up my laptop and massive hard drive and prepare to ingest data from the day. All of this was going on to a UPS with car battery replacement so I wasn't really pulling any heavy loads. I think it was just one really worn out GFCI. It's fun running crossed disciplines in Electrical, IT and audio/video!
11:22 very interesting. pretty much all our breakers in Norway has GFIs built in or ground protection atleast. Now some 3 phase +n systems here do not use it cuz intsalers are lazy, but usaly its then plugged in to an PDU in the actual rack or thats atleast how i have done it in the past and then it has voltage metering and Ground fault protection
GFI's should technically be used outdoors for sure. We understand it to be a requirement for them, but we can only conclude that events are not inspected much and anyone that can build an electrical break out box, will use it indoors/outdoors. I can recall maybe one time many years ago that our electrical was inspected. Unfortunately, we can only say here in Minnesota, you gotta understand the basics of electrical systems if you are concerned about safety because nobody else is watching out for you and that's why we talk about a lot. In an upcoming video, our electrical tester potentially saved us.....it was power that we were told "has been used for years and nobody has had an issue". Well, there was an issue that we discovered that they ended up fixing for us. How many other times was this power used that folks were not aware of the ever present danger?.....all parties were lucky nobody was ever harmed!

Yeah i have the the electrical knowlage i need to find out of stuff is wrong and i always probe , i donr have a tester but a multimeter wich has frequency meter as well wo i always probe 230/240 acros the 3 legs + Notrh and 130 ish acros to ground cuz thats how our power works. And then as said that goes into and pdu which also has that protection.
As always safety is nr 1 priority either it be power or the way trusses are mounted etc. So i understand that u guys do it. Just thought it was a little interesting since im not used to UK/US power setups. I know they are 120v systems , and ad for other asian contries 110 60hz but ither than that not really something i know to much about
I can't stand mixing off a tablet. We've all had those cases of corp gig where you have to be out of sight and no place for FOH but trying to mix rock and pop groups with 20 or more inputs is for the birds. Gotta have a real console and real faders. The more faders the better.
I used to think more like you, but given the choice of mixing on a console at a compromised location vs. mixing on a tablet with its limitation, I will choose the tablet. This is a business decision we made a few years ago that started with the decision that we will never mix a wedding again at a traditional FOH location. The cable has capacitance, creates a high pass situation. Usually happens when just a few wires get shorted somewhere in the middle of the cable.
Thank you so much for explaining this! This one was driving us crazy as it was difficult to baseline the issue. Working with different drummers, venues, cable tester ok, etc. in conjunction with it "working fine" for some gigs, it took awhile to nail down. This is "high pass" situation is exactly what was happening.
@@thesoundcouple I've been there! It might have been that way much longer than you realize if it was used in a high pass situation (HH,OH etc). Sometimes being a creature of habit (some say organized) is detrimental lol. I've only had it happen 2-3 times in my 20 years doing this. Other rare mishaps - a transformer set inside the loop of a mic cable left coiled on the deck....melted the cable from the inducted voltage(got lucky that was it), guitar player left a 100' extension cord looped during use.....nice little fire. When in doubt, GFCI everything. Have fun, be safe!
@@LstrO42 oh wow yes. I like to have a master Killswitch for anything on stage that isn't my equipment you just can't trust stuff sometimes that's out of your control. I know my equipment and maintain it that's not the same for everybody else.
I've never heard of the capacitance issue I did have something similar happened where it was the cold or hot that broke, I was still getting signal through cable but it was half the volume due to the differential amplifier.
It's a small but different content... Please let me know how to adjust the sound in the future. Your own philosophy ^^

great video as always you guys do a superb job ,as a sound engineer myself i find it annoying like you guys must find it during soundcheck to find you got a faulty xlr lead , i just recently upgraded from presonus rack mount mixer to a digico s21 desk and for the money the presonus was hard to beat for the money but i prefer using pysical faders ,keep up the great work u do
Agreed! Murphy’s law seems like there is always something that wants to go wrong - especially XLR cables. We’ve even found that certain ones don’t play well with the lights. Go figure.
Physical faders are nice! (But can’t beat set ups where finding a spot for a console out front is a real pain! Rack mixer to the rescue!)

Thanks for posting, enjoy your videos! Every time I see you lift and place your cdl12 top cab I wince. That 63lb lift looks a bit unsafe to me. I'm not trained in ergonomic safety but It appears your shoulders or possibly back could be at risk for injury. Perhaps a lift assist or crank stand? Hope you don't mind the comment...

How much work was the PA doing during that gig, was it near it’s limits or had plenty of headroom? Also, do the upper tops have different gains or processing from the bottom tops. Sound nice and punchy.
Hi Will - I would say for this gig, we were running the system between 80%-85% of capacity (capacity = what I am comfortable running them at). We use Worx Control for processing....nothing special. If I recall correctly, just running flat with 100Hz crossover point.

Hi Guys - I know this is a year old but I enjoyed the video. I am searching for a way to make my drum miking easier. Bart you mentioned a drum snake but only in passing other than possibly an iffy kick cable. Could you elaborate how yours is designed? Currently I plug each drum individually into my back line snake but does seem to eat up a lot of time. TY

We have 8 XLR cables zip tied together and labeled. 3 of them are longer to better accommodate the kick/snare/overhead channels. We also have a custom multi-channel snake and the nice thing about it, it's only "one" line, but we find it more difficult to manage the fan end to connect to the mics, so we prefer XLR cables that are a bit easier to work with. Perhaps we will break it out some day to revisit.
I place the main stage box next/behind the drums. Run individual xlr’s to it. I keep my drum cables packed together so just crab and plug. The cables are 10’ for kit mics, 15’ for overheads. That way you just grab the group and plug away. Don’t need to take time to find specific label. I’ve tried looms as well. Watch out for zip ties. They tear up your hand. I typically have 28 channels and 8 monitor mixes to deal with, so I keep it simple and repeatable.

I think that blue plastic cover on stage may create some disturbance in frequency, i don't know why but i personally experience in my some shows (Gigs).... If you also experience same please tell me....
I didn't get the sense that the tarp was causing any frequency issues. Remember too that with IEM system, the stage volume for the band isn't that loud. So if you add monitor wedges and a loud stage, the surfaces around the stage can have a bigger impact to the sound out front.
I am very curious about the PreSonus system you use. Your thoughts on the mains and subs? Other brands of commercial grade sound re-enforcement you could compare them to? Sounded great on camera. How hard were you pushing it?
Hi John - you have a revealed another reason why we started our channel. And that reason is because we wanted to show gear doing real work, and not just another product review of people talking about it! We like the cabinets as they fit our practical needs (more factors than just how they sound) so we don't see any reason to change at this point. I would say the subs are in-line with what you would expect for their size. I continued to be amazed at how well the CDL12's make our job easier....but they have their limits as well. I would say at this gig, I was at about 85%-90% of what I am comfortable running them at. It's difficult for me to compare to others, but I like the way they sound.
Just wondering if the cables came to the main console as two large keyed multiway plugs and sockets would that make things easier.
I am guessing it would but not sure specifically how that would be accomplished.
@@thesoundcouple the plug board consisting of 32 Jack sockets terminating at one keyed multi-connector to one side and the other keyed multi-connector would be for the sound to the speakers and the light system to accommodate some sound to light effects as seen fit for certain shows.

Are you using any delay on the system with regards to the sub in the middle under the stage? Seems like there could be some phasing issues...
Also, it could be fun to watch you do a walkthrough of your preset in the Presonus mixer regarding eq and comp settings. And why you cut/boost certain frequencies. I know each show is different from the last one, but something like "I generally always cut xx herz because it removes a lot of boominess from xx instrument/vocal". And do you do any main EQ for the CDLs or just run them straigh through with no EQ, how do you handle boomy rooms, harsh tents etc. That stuff would be fun to watch a video about.
I do believe we get some phasing issues at times....this is something we could get better at addressing if this is a possible issue. However, low end response can be such a variable beast with power alley/valleys, it seems like you could spin yourself in circles trying to address them. And for a gig like this, we were just happy to get the band up and going on time....pick your battles!
