Enjoyed the video as always. The main thing that strikes me is that your professionalism always shines through. I came up in Sydney when there was a lot of completion for work but fortunately a good number of the system owners were shall we say, a bit flaky and we definitely weren't. If we were booked for a band to sound check at 5pm and they showed up at 4;30 the system and lights would be ready for them. We also took notes so that when we worked for a band or artist again we knew names, where their backline went, who stood where etc. On a side note despite all of Australia's big clubs being supported by gambling by the time we sold up in 1986 there was still only four venues where the house system was good enough to leave ours in the truck which as our total system was pushing two tons in weight was unfortunate to say the least. From what I hear that would be completely different today and almost all of the big venues have been completely refurbished if not demolished and rebuilt.
Thankfully I ran across your channel. Just ordered the presonus package from sweetwater. After seeing your channel and speaking to the sales guy at sweetwater I was sold. Getting the ULT18s and CDL12s. I’m graduating from QSC. Was going to go with mackie 3way system but I think I made the right choice. Keep gigging. Thanks for the content.
Being out of your comfort zone on another system is a good way to evaluate your set up and mixes. Systems will sound different as much as rooms are different. Your ability to make it work and get a good result is what you get paid for.
Part of your sound is connecting with the gear. I am sure my mixing has evolved on our system and sometimes hearing it differently with partially our gear can play with your mind. The bottom line is all this gear has merit and it comes to needs and preferences. Trust me, I have mixed on some real crappy systems in the past, so we are worlds away from that experience!
There was just too many variables for us to really assess them overall. My first impression that the entire system felt boxy and sterile. If we were going through our console exclusively with a band we work with more...that would be a good first step. @@sound4uaudiovideorecording927
I would be questioning what the House mixer has on the EQ. They might be heavily doing it for the speakers Mic which might be heavily cutting out stuff.
True...in thinking more about your comment, it reminded me that my mind goes into combat audio mode in these situations. Years ago when I was doing more club work, I mixed on a lot of subpar systems where I developed my survival instincts. This system was far from that even and I a made it work even though you are right, I could have likely spoken with the tech crew to see what they had going on.
We own the QSC HPR series and having A/B'd them with the k series they are definitely warmer. They have birch wood cabinets and while they are heavier they simply sound better. We have a lot of mid-range horns and vocals in our 12-piece group and we've been very happy with them. You definitely want a ramp on your trailer or van though to minimize the lifting.
You guys might want to look I to a ramp for your van ! We got one and were saying why didn’t we do this 20 years ago. One person can roll those subs etc into the truck and it will save you time.
I have 4 qsc subs and 8 qsc kla tops... LOVE them. HAVE to EQ them per the room. They are a bight heavy in the highs at high volume. Once Im done with QSC I am going Danley Sound Labs ! I am worth and my clients are worth the investment.
I've never heard the CDLs, QSC tend to sound a bit harsh and need some EQ. Maybe you could have increased sub output on that QSC system since you were not running it that hot, but then it's not yours so probably best not to mess with it.
Yeah...I basically had to determine if I had enough to work with and I did when I tested the mains. Sometimes you just take that and go. The system was well within acceptable range.
I know that you know, but I really like to start with the voice first, after I have it loud and clear enough to say to me "let's lower the voice in house a bit..!"" then I start with drums and everything. By the time I ended the line check eq, comp so on... and because I put all the volume more or less related to voice, even if I didn't have it 100% singing, I am ready probably around 90% of the mix... 10% will be solved in first 3 minutes of the song. This is my speed procedure and I start, as you, from a previous scene... By the way, R32 rules the shows with speed and clarity on this type of shows, pretty much my specialty :D
That's a great point and a technique I use more as a house tech and wedges. In this case, it was more about who was ready to go...and for the band being mostly on in-ears the psychology of sound checks doesn't play as much as a role.
Stacy is a great working partner, my wife doesn't have strength to do heavy moving. LOL it's always weird using the house system, getting their early is always the key.

The audio for this gig was captured with our iPhones which besides a GoPro, is the way we capture all of our video/sound. If you noticed, I have my tracks I play to EQ the systemwith my ears....I don't remember what I did for EQ'ing, but it's likely I did some sort of EQ as that's pretty standard for me to do.

These mics have been around for many years. I used to own one and use it in a band and they do a good job and provide freedom for a drummer, especially those who sing a lot which I did. That said, as a FOH engineer, I tend to prefer a standard mic on a drummer as they can use the proximity to work the mic which you can't do with a headset and the mic/stand tends not to interfere as much with the mix as it's more fixed. I would not recommend a headset for a vocalist that doesn't understand how to use it....your vocal approach needs to adjust to the fact that it's always right there in front of your lips.@@martinstraub_

I'm not a fan of QSC Speakers at all, I find their tops very shouty and fatiguing. I don't find their subs too bad, a bit lacking in punch for my liking. I would go so far as to say "stick to making amps, let those who know what they're doing make the speakers". I too am looking forward to the comparison. :)
@thesoundcouple Those old QSCs are beasts. I do the odd spell at a venue that uses the RMX series of amplifiers. They're superb. I run only a passive system (if I weigh up the pros and cons on the basis of how I like to work, passive wins every time), but even with Class D amplifiers, the amp rack isn't light. I'm currently working on upgrading my amplifiers, and even with Class D, I'm looking at an 80Kg combined weight by the time the build is complete... If you need an amplifier with real horsepower, they still need to have some weight to them. Given the above, I'm going to be splitting the racks out to make them more manageable.
Understood...it was really hard letting our amps go...we had several QSC PLX's, Crest CA's, and Crown Macrotechs. There was always a satisfying feeling when you turn 'em on and the lights flash and you hear the fans rev up! Many benefits for sure, but the powered solution was just the way we needed to go. One extra benefit is that the speaker repair guy probably thinks I quit because we just don't have the driver failures like we used to....I think one sub re-recone since we we went powered in 2017.@@johnmcquay82
From watching this video and other videos of corporate gigs from The Sound Couple, it appears to me that some of the unusual complexity of both a venue and the client can arise at these corporate gigs. This video illustrates the kind of flexibility that The Sound Couple possesses, in order to process and work through the potential problems that can arise when a production company must use equipment supplied by others. As usual, the professionalism of Bart and Stacy helps drive them through the difficulties, so they can provide the musicians and the client with excellent results. A gig that I oversee every week requires my equipment to feed through the system provided by the venue. This means that if someone from the venue changes settings on that system, it can effect the efficacy of the system I provide. Since I only have a 20-minute set-up time available, this can produce unnecessary stress almost every week. I have learned a great deal from the way Bart and Stacy deal with such problems and applaud them for how their many years providing production services has taught them the best ways to deal with challenges that arise.
Hi Dean - Sounds like you can relate to this one! We realized pretty quickly where we fell on the list of priorities. There was so much going on...and frankly we're used to it. It is common for these types of events that the entertainment doesn't receive much recognition until it's time to party...then you must make like a light switch.

I know what the inside of a personus speaker looks like and the QSC but there’s really no reason you can’t have a single top up there doing point source
For this job, one could have got the job done for us. The system for the program as well, so full room coverage is what you need for that so two seems like a good choice.
Can't say I'm a big fan of KLA's... or most QSC stuff in general. I usually end up having to carve them up pretty good to get something usable out of them. They also definitely should have had more sub with that rig, if they knew there was a band in... If I'm hitting the PA via another console, I'm always a big stickler for knowing exactly what they're doing, and making sure my inputs are flat, and bypassing their main EQ's as well, so I can EQ the system myself, especially in a situation like this, where they've likely tuned that system to work well for their lectern mics, and speech in general. I remember one gig I did where I had my console running through the house console, and between soundcheck and the show the house guy turned some compression on my inputs. top of the show I could see I was 12db into gain reduction! like what the f*ck is that?? I immediately told him to back it off obviously...
Agreed, there are times where you need to say something. In this case, I felt everything was in workable parameters, so my interaction with the system techs was minimal. Always appreciate the time you take to share of your insights and knowledge on our channel!
@@thesoundcouple yeah, most of the time guys will understand what you want without you actually saying it... usually its: me: everything flat? them: yup! me: Ok sick 🤘🏼 Then I'll have a listen, and if somethings weird we can dive in further. Never had the chance to experience the QSCs or CDL. I know there should be some of those QSCs around my area but no luck getting a chance of hearing them. CDLs are the proverbial hen's teeth in the Netherlands.
QLC decent subs, but awful tops for live bands... better for dj's I'm running a Wharfedale pro WLA-25 setup (small line array) sounds killer for its size and price!
Thanks...this wasn't quite a direct comparison because we were going through another mixer as well. But yes, we are pleased with the results the CDL's bring to us on our gigs.
I don't know if it's the band's playlist, the way too large rooms, the bright lighting, the people in this region, or all of those reasons but it happens a lot in your videos that those corporate events seams to be sooo boring with 2 or 3 people max on the dance floor ! This is so dull for a band !
Corporate shows can vary a lot....sometimes people want to socialize more or listen. That night, the dance floor would come and go. We don't let it bother us as with many of the events like this, the band is just part of a bigger scene.

What center fills are those, or they just monitors not being used??
They were center fills that we assume were used for the program, but we didn't use them. The dance floor was far enough in front of the stage.

When you reference 95db sound level, at what distance/location are you measuring?
We spent most of our time right on the other side of the dance floor. Approx 35-40ft from the stage.

I know what the inside of a personus speaker looks like and the QSC but there’s really no reason you can’t have a single top up there doing point source
For this job, one could have got the job done for us. The system for the program as well, so full room coverage is what you need for that so two seems like a good choice.

It wasn't bad...just different.
Kinda lame that the in house production group having access to chain motors and rigging that the pa was ground stacked.
We can only assume that is what the client ordered...like we mentioned in the beginning of the video, we were not provided much info on this gig.
Can't say I'm a big fan of KLA's... or most QSC stuff in general. I usually end up having to carve them up pretty good to get something usable out of them. They also definitely should have had more sub with that rig, if they knew there was a band in...
If I'm hitting the PA via another console, I'm always a big stickler for knowing exactly what they're doing, and making sure my inputs are flat, and bypassing their main EQ's as well, so I can EQ the system myself, especially in a situation like this, where they've likely tuned that system to work well for their lectern mics, and speech in general.
I remember one gig I did where I had my console running through the house console, and between soundcheck and the show the house guy turned some compression on my inputs. top of the show I could see I was 12db into gain reduction! like what the f*ck is that?? I immediately told him to back it off obviously...
Agreed, there are times where you need to say something. In this case, I felt everything was in workable parameters, so my interaction with the system techs was minimal.

Then I'll have a listen, and if somethings weird we can dive in further.
I will say, I always try to have my drive lines straight to the system processor if possible, though it's not always feasible in a multi console situation...

Never had the chance to experience the QSCs or CDL.
I know there should be some of those QSCs around my area but no luck getting a chance of hearing them.
CDLs are the proverbial hen's teeth in the Netherlands.

Thanks...this wasn't quite a direct comparison because we were going through another mixer as well. But yes, we are pleased with the results the CDL's bring to us on our gigs.

I don't know if it's the band's playlist, the way too large rooms, the bright lighting, the people in this region, or all of those reasons but it happens a lot in your videos that those corporate events seams to be sooo boring with 2 or 3 people max on the dance floor ! This is so dull for a band !
Corporate shows can vary a lot....sometimes people want to socialize more or listen. That night, the dance floor would come and go. We don't let it bother us as with many of the events like this, the band is just part of a bigger scene.
Center fills don't seem necessary with those line arrays..they are pretty low.
I don't believe we used the center fills..the system was provided by the venue.
Turn the house lights and more would dance...way too bright
