Lighting them with a torch is safer for the hands because some homemade fuses actually shoot off Sparks that can burn you badly.

Hey, guys! Great video and attempt at making fuses. I’m a professional pyrotechnician and one of the things we sometimes do to make crappy fuses burn quicker and consistent is to wrap them tightly in plastic tape! It acts like a chimney to keep the heat going strong.

The fuses dont last very long, they should be used immediately when dried as sugar is hygroscopic and will absorb moisture thus becoming less effective over time.
A trick is to pop the fuses in the oven on a low heat to remove some of the moisture.
Or paint them in clear nail polish once they're totally dry
and here we see the universe giving them like 15 chances to realize holding something explosive is a bad idea

Like the guy above me said, they did made knives out of styrofoam and another time one out of a saw blade. But they also made a prison spear shank thing out of a spoon, newspapers and a bedsheet.

Fun fact: in the Netherlands, professional fuse is classified as an illegal explosive device. Because making firework fuse longer makes it more dangerous because it doesn't explode when you expect it to. Man I love our lawmakers.

Tip for Dutch lawmakers: Studies by Chinese explosive experts (circa 1000 AD) suggest that the length of the fuse and the time of detonation may _possibly_ be correlated. American studies are still ongoing, but they _seem_ to confirm that a firework with a fuse burned all the way down will almost always detonate sooner than one with a longer length of unburned fuse, _regardless_ of whether or not any length of fuse was added by the consumer.

The problem with the first fuse that didn't continue burning is because u let it for 34 days in an open area, potassium nitrate tends to absorb moisture out of the air which causes the fuse to not burn properly or even fail completly, all u need is to put it in a sealed container
Then how to let it dry?
I literally forgot that i commented this, but if you want it to dry you could put it in an oven at around 60C, a safer way is to put it in a sealed container with a desicant in it for a couple of days.@@HMS.corruption

Jason cuts himself with a knife, is rushed to ER, has to get stitches and spends multiple episodes with a bandage on his thumb.
The next few episodes after that, Jason smashes explosives with a rock and then holds onto a firework with absolutely no protection.
I'm glad to see Jason really learned something valuable from that experience.

So sugar rockets are hydroscopic, aka they’ll absorb water from the atmosphere that might have hindered the fuses. You can use the potassium nitrate, water and string to make fuses without the sugar. To make fuses last longer you can add sodium bicarbonate to slow the burn.
Roman Candles have said "Do not hold in hand" for decades now. Though I will say, do not squeeze is the real advice to have. You can cause the inner workings to not launch out and backup/explode.
Every so often I think "this is the episode, this is the one that will leave one of them permanently injured"

The fuses absorb moisture from the air, putting them in a oven at a low temp and drying them out it important to do. And store them with silica beads or some sort of dehumidifier.
Saw the title and assumed you were going to be stuffing aluminum foil into a fusebox... This is just as dangerous and entertaining. :D

Kids in my hometown used to hold Roman candles as wands and play Harry Potter, flinging spells (colourful fireballs) at each other XD
If the cartoons taught me anything you're not supposed to hold it in your hand. You're supposed to replace your friend's cigar with it and let the fun begin.
If you guys ever revisit this, I have always been told that you should braid the strings together still in the KNO and sugar mix to trap a whole lot more in. Also maybe some better strings, possibly candle wicks?

I'm pretty certain roman candles only actually work correctly when held in the hand and aimed at your friends while everyone runs around a large field in the dark. Anything else produces suboptimal results.

having made those fuses in the past, they are hydrophilic, they absorb water from the air over time and that is what makes them inconsistent, you're supposed to bake the water out of them at first in a very low temp oven and if you can store them with a desiccant then they should continue to be consistent, however i've started looking for other, non-hydropilic, fuses
Now that you've made these you have props for your Scam Nation riddle about two fuses that burn stochastically for an hour and you need to measure 15 minutes.

I've heard some really spotty things about it. Incomplete or incorrect recipes & directions being the most common.

The things that come into play are A pure cotton string=best fuse base, B purity on the chemicals either potassium nitrate or ammonium nitrate both are in different stump removers and by nature of the product have other bs in the bottle. But local feed shops sell it as fertilizer straight up, C I always get better results with I really work it in the string and then ring the globs out/off the string.
Another trick with much better results does take more time but crushing match heads specifically just the the tip no wood can be mixed with just water to create a slush which you can smoke into your cotton string and let dry. Burns better doesn't crap out and takes way less to create other than the work/time.

It's a bit like resistors working in parallel. If you take two (uninsulated) copper wires and twist them together, the resistance will drop because the electricity effectively has more space to travel along.
Low-tech analogy, you'll drive quicker along a wider road!
The fuses probably need to be cooked a little longer. You probably want to get them almost to the point of self-detonation. Anyway, nice Independence Day episode (complete with Star Spangled Banner)! Happy Fourth, everyone!

The use of the torch to light a homemade fuse is causing the fuse to burn out. The force of the flame is also blowing the fuse out.
you see what I do is after the fuses dry, I then coat each fuse with hair spray and wait until they are dry, you will have a stiffer product that won't sag and it keeps the black powder from falling off... give it a try and I GUARANTEE you will start doing it that way for now on.

I would suggest making 3 strings and plaiting them into one working fuse for each firework, or, knowing you guys, homemade bomb you plan to use.

maybe the fuses just needed to be more substantial? I mean the mega-fuse worked great, so if you just braided/weaved a couple fuses together it would probably make a single pretty reliable one.
