The Best Value Enduro Bike - 2022 Canyon Torque 29 AL 5

  • It's time that I try out a full 29er again and with the latest advancements in geometry... The Torque 29 AL 5 fits the bill perfectly. Canyon has finally created their Torque as a 29er and it is a freeride machine that can eat up park laps all day long, while also holding it's own for the enduro crowd. Additionally, Canyon is crushing the competition with their price point on this bike and the components list is on point. Tell me your thoughts and where to ride next in the comments below!

    I have mine from october 2022. I only had problems with cable rattle when removing and installing shigura, wheelset is not so great if you ride stairs but in woods its fine for the price but other than that shifting is okay, brakes work really well ( I just wanted to try magura mt7 pro with shimano levers from the bike and its working really well.. The feeling when riding is awesome. Easy to do tricks on and stable when going fast downhill. Overall 9.8/10 for this bike, but after 600 euros of upgrades it works like a 5000 euros bike and it feels much better soo 11/10.

    I’d say a good comparison to this would be the 2021 GT Force 29. Alloy frame, 150mm of rear travel, 170mm up front. I got one for $3500 (USD) with a Fox Performance 38, Performance Elite DPX2, Sram Code R brakes, Stans Flow S1 wheels, and an NX Eagle drivetrain. I’m pretty sure GT is still producing them along side of the 2022 Force Carbon. Plus the Force has all external routing which I personally prefer

    • @GlobalTrailGuide
      @GlobalTrailGuide  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for sharing! Just took a look on GTs website, looks like it’s $3800 now, which prices it quite a bit above the Torque (or Spectral). Still, like you said, not a bad build spec if you’re a Sram fan. Only complaint I have is the dropper is too short, 125mm for S and 150mm for M-XL. Geo does look quite nice for anyone looking for a well rounded all mountain bike. Thanks again for sharing! There’s so many bikes out there it’s hard to check them all for comparison.

      @@GlobalTrailGuide I’m pretty sure it comes with a 125mm post on the medium as well, or at least mine did, but at 5’6” I don’t need a longer post. Also I had a spreadsheet of probably close to 60 bikes and I definitely missed a few good ones when it came down to deciding on which one to go for, so I totally get how hard it is to find every possible comparison. I have a 2011 torque that I love dearly. I run it as a 26/27.5 mullet. Its cables are internally routed through the chain stay, but not though the down tube. Funny to see that the reverse is true on the 2022 model.

    • @GlobalTrailGuide
      @GlobalTrailGuide  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Very interesting! That is quite funny. If I had to choose one and couldn’t have both, I’d definitely prefer them to be routed through the front triangle - so much nicer looking and so much easier to clean mud off the down tube, etc. I’d still rather have both be internally routed though haha

    • @GlobalTrailGuide
      @GlobalTrailGuide  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      From Canyon’s perspective (as well as other brands), they would tell you that the mullet bike is specifically designed for mixed wheels and that the 29er is specifically designed for 29 wheels. They’d say the bikes were optimized for the wheels. And they aren’t wrong, the rear triangles are technically different.
      However, consumers have been experimenting with different mullet setups prior to the brands designing them. When doing so, many consumers would often rely on a 29er in the high flip chip position and then use a 27.5 wheel. With the thought being that the smaller wheel offsets the difference in geo from the high position. Your results will vary from bike to bike, and I haven’t personally tested it with the Torque to give feedback for how it rides or if it’s a realistic thing to try. Some 29ers will be too low when you try to mullet them. A 2.6 or 2.8 27.5 tire can also help to keep the rear axle higher though.

      It’s not equivalent, which I consider to be a benefit overall, just not for trying a mullet.
      Canyon says they provided the best of both worlds for the AL frames… the head angle is like the low position, at 63.5, and the seat angle is like the high position, at 78. Not sure how the BB sits relative to the carbon frames with flip chips.

      You’re not wrong, but we also aren’t living in 2005 anymore and it’s reasonable to have higher expectations 🙂 it’s our hard earned money, let’s expect the most from the industry. The little things add up!

    • @Poraqui
      @Poraqui 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@GlobalTrailGuide My point was missed. What for you can be considered a misstep on this manufacturers part might have a reason beyond being a cheapening strategy to maximize profit on an already overpriced item. It might have to do, for instance, maintenance where cable accessibility, can be key to service that particular bike or swap or replace components. Sometimes internal cable routing might have gone too far and stops the rider from effectively customizing the bike to its needs and taste. It is still a bicycle after all. In 2003-2005 the standards from what we expect from high end bikes weren't different, we valued in the same way our hard earned money but there was a criticism focused on other aspects of owning a MTB. Cabling was rarely an issue no matter the price. And the same rough and challenging terrains were equally tackled with. Internal routing has as much of an engineering/practical application as a marketing/sales one.
      You have all the right in the world to point out your personal misgivings with your bike, but I believe we have think about if in the end is a fair criticism and if it indeed will stop others from acquiring a product that, all things, considered might be what they're looking for and fits their budget.
