Suspicions confirmed. My step dad has these and was raving about them but I wasn’t so sure, I knew this tech had promise but wasn’t near being perfect at all.
Holy shit, an Avran action figure doll would be awesome but instead of being a Terje that you could bend and fold into all kinds of grabs, it'd be absolutely stiff and have detailed K2 Thraxis boots and Rome Black Label bindings.
My favorite bit I saw about these before this video was when Malcom Moore mentioned he was approached to review them but when he asked to try to get some clarification on some of his concerns over the bindings they decided not to send him a review pair.
100% why I’m a fan of you mister…..i couldn’t believe how cheap these bindings looked/felt like in person. Then you watch all these talking heads praising them….glad you once again proved where your allegiance lies…to snowboarders and snowboarding itself. This take was fire!! Keep it up!

I got the Clew bindings because at 74 yo I wanted something a little easier to get into. After having multiple strap breakages and screws falling out I was fed up. Luckily, because of the hype, I was able to sell them at the Larson’s annual swap meet for a little more than half of what I paid.

Yesss! Finally a REAL review! Actually i bought one and sold it immediately because of quality. I've never even ridden it. It was so disappointing. Thanks for the honest review.

Man o man, I won a pair of these from an Insta giveaway and I am SO glad I immediately turned around and sold them. Earlier this season I was getting off the lift at Keystone and someone’s Clew high back was just sitting there in the snow.
I was on a gondola with a kid who was using those. He said the toe strap broke the first time he used them. He asked me about my supermatics and if I liked them, yes I do.
What did you use before nidecker supermatics? I like the look of them. I have used rear entry flow copies for the past four years and love them but would consider upgrading
I used flows, the stiffer carbon model. The supermatics are less stiff but once I got them dialed in the are great. I use thraxis boots so the boots themselves are stiff enough themselves. I really like the supermatics quite a bit but I'm 48 so I'm a bit old and like the convenience and speed of just stepping in.
Super matics have a carbon model for next year too I rode them at Brighton last week on the Gamma so sick and sick a natural feel! Rumor has it supermatic is wanting to extend the line up and make a lighter freestyle one and a women's specific model
I'm newly back into snowboarding and got Burton Step-Ons w/ DC boots that I'm very happy with for how ignorant I am. Then I got into more snowboarding youtubes to learn stuff and saw the Clew ones. I saw no good reviews on how they actually were. Thank you. It was fun listening to good verbal teardown. As an engineer of plastic parts, I think you did a good job of describing what the hell is happening with this design too.
Thanks for keeping it real this is the only review that actually discussed the negative points in depth and there were many more than I found anywhere else on the entire web. I was considering and now will not be purchasing these bindings. Thank you for helping me to not waste my money on something I would have regretted and been able to get a different fighting which was much more functional.
God damn that's refreshing. Thank you for your honesty. That's the first video I've seen today that didn't make me feel like I was living in a Chinese AI sponsored reality.
The realist reviewer in the snowboarding industry, thank you. When I first saw these I was thinking “why would I want to walk around with half of a binding connected to my boots”.

Great honest review! Something to ease that sore back. Frankly, the Clew concept just didn’t appeal and I ignored them. A bit surprised how poor the execution is - definitely good to know. From a guy who lifts weights 😂 Cheers

ive rocked the supermatics, step ons, and clews and im sticking with the step ons. same convenience as the others with less weight and super responsive feel. in the park i still rock traditional bindings for the looser feel
Thank you for this, confirming all the suspicions I had! Developing a quality binding takes a lot of experience, and I did not think the clueless guys behind this product seemed convincing. And Procamp def lost plot with this and Outdoor Masters promotion....
I bought these for under $200 last year, barely used. I really like them and have had no issues, but I will go back and check everything and replace items you recommend. Thanks
Thank you so much for this, I already had to talk a few people out of buying them because they dont know a whole lot about bindings and have only seen positive reviews.
I own one. Rode it for 7 days. The highback is 3cm shorter than other bindings, so for us bigger guys, it's too small. Also in real conditions, on the snow, it doesn't click in every time. Many times I had to do pretty good workout to be able to step in. It would be quicker to step in with regular bindings. And I bought them only for this reason.
thanks for your honest review. i was searching for any negative reviews on these when i was looking to purchase a set for this season but didn't find any, so i bought a set. had this review been out then, i wouldn't have bought it. that said, i did buy a set and have rode 15 days on them season so far. being 47 years old, i do love the convenience of step in (i have Flow in the past). ive only been ridding for 4 years (many years on ski before that), i'd say im and intermediate rider, i dont ride park but i do some straight air. i don't ever intend to walk around with high back on, i think thats dumb. the toe strap does flop down fairly easy, epically if you stomp your board in lift line. i usually just reach down and pull them up while on lift and they are ready when i get off the lift. i made adjustment to high back on the first day and haven't touch it since, i always have a pocket tool in my coat (my friends use the tool for their bindings more than i ever have). the binding did pop out one time during a carve, and i always make sure it's double click before i head down the mountain. i think their might have been ice or snow in the locking mechanism, so even though it sounded like it click, it wasn't seated completely. since i already have them, i'll keep them for the rest of the season. i will take your advice and replace all the hardware tho, probably from my Burton Mission, lol
@@Ryy22 just the 4 screws for the disk. The screws for the strap seems fine, I would think the strap would break before the screws will, but you can replace them with toolless crews if you adjust them often. All the other hardware on the binding seems proprietary, so I won't mess with them.
@@Ryy22 i didn't take notice if the disk was flat or not when i installed them few months ago. but i did just check them when i swap out the hardware and they were flat. so even if they weren't flat before, they are flat now after being installed for so long.
So i ordered these waited a year and finally got them, i have to say i really like them, i live in Michigan and our runs are 30 seconds long, they are good for getting in and out, and i just got back from vail, i personally had no issues, but then again i am old and fat!
To be honest, I've used StepOn, Nidecker Supermatic, and Clew bindings. I experienced pain points with the StepOn bindings (probably due to the StepOn boots), and I find Nidecker super hard to step into, in my opinion. Clew has its drawbacks (sometimes it's not easy to get clicked in completely), but overall, I am pretty satisfied with it.
Intermediate rider here with less than 10 days in them: I agree with the low quality material throughout these bindings. And they are heavier than a traditional binding setup. However, I have I have not lost any parts and minimal adjustments since the second day on them. It is also better to fully unstrap if you are trying your strap up in deep powder. The clip will not set with snow packed in. Other than those cons, personally, I’m not very flexible so I save time and energy, which allows for more runs in a day. I still pack my trad bindings in case there is a failure. Still enjoying them for now.
thx for this best ever review i ve watched. I ride burton step on and happy with it! Thought about the clew binding, but who wants to carry his binding the hole day around! thx to beeing so honest with us, cheers
Maybe Avran will like them. From now on every snowboard review will have the words. I rode this with my K2 Thraxis boots and my Clew freedom 1.0 bindings 👌🏻
I hope this video saves someone. Your last year video about the CLEW saved me. And yeah I watched the video of ProCamp and Buckhouse and they seems to enjoy it but they are sponsored. I am getting the supermatic instead and I like that binding.
Angry, you are the man, don't ever hold back and always let em know, glad to see somone out there is educating the kids and the adults alike. My 13yr old son asked me the other day why are all the influencers you mentioned Procamp, Buckhouse etc. sprooking these bindings, I told him, they're getting paid to do it and the bindings are most likely junk. Keep up the great work and non bias reviews!
Wow, love the super real review. I was considering these, mainly as I do spend a lot of time with pesky skiers who like to stop on flat bits, chat then shoot off, leaving me trying to strap in and catch up. Saved me wasting my money. You have a new subscriber.
I bought these bindings because I have a very stiff lower back and can barely reach my toes. I am a design engineer and have worked for many automotive, aerospace and defence companies. The first thing I noticed when I installed the bindings is not so much the quality of the supplied hardware but the lack of thead engagement in the inserts of the board - the screws are too short. A good rule of thumb is you want 1D of thread engagement in steel and 1.5D in aluminium. That is 1x the diameter of the screw. So, on an M6 screw that should be 6 turns. The supplied hardware went into my board about 3 turns. I bought M6 x 18mm CSK screws in A4-70 and they went into my board 4.5 turns (check with no binding on your board how many turns you can get a screw in before it bottoms out - I had about 1 turn to spare so all good). I also used blue loctite on the threads not so much to prevent them backing out but to try and prevent risk of galling or galvanic corrosion of the inserts. If you use zinc plated and passivated screws you shouldn't need to worry about this. So I would say the breaking screws/inserts is more to do with the engagement than the quality. I have just ridden the bindings on a Batalion Goliath for 5 days in La Plagne. I am an intermediate snowboarder and came from a pair of Flux bingings I've had for a few years. Overall I liked the Clew and won't be sending them back. I didn't find many areas where I felt they were inferior to the Flux and the speed and ease of clicking in is great and not sitting on your arse faffing with straps at the top of each run is great. My only criticisms are I did feel a bit more pressure across my ankles after a couple of days riding then I have noticed before and there were a couple of occasions towards the end of the week where the binding didn't engage the second ratchet on the right side of the rear foot (regular) without some rocking of the high back. I think this is because of the stop for the high back hitting the rear of the binding before fully engaged so maybe bending your knees a bit as you step in helps. I do have concerns over the longevity of the engagement faces as one is already showing a bit of wear but for the amount of riding I do (only really one winter holiday a year) I'm not overly worried. I think some of the points raised in this vid are valid, if a little overstate. Overall I'm pretty happy with my purchase and think the concept is pretty good.

they already reviewed the burtons several years ago and said that they're far from trash, and I think like what some other commenters here've said there's really no need review the burtons as in depth as these, they're made by a well established company that generally doesn't make garbage
@@duncanmn95 yes they have 5 years ago 😂 Since then they did some changes to the system why not a review? 😅 Burton is a well established and respected brand I use Burton since day one I started to do snowboard
@@duncanmn95 following your way of thinking, it's not worth making new reviews every time the latest iPhone comes out, your comment doesn't make sense sorry 😅
Djeeeez, this review is Longer than any goodride review.. But damn, have I been waiting for this one! Appreciate the time you put into it, the fact that you bought this binding to review it? Cheers mate, thanks!
I bought a pair this year (after watching them for the past 2 years) with the intent of using them for snowkiting and rapid laps at my 250' local hill. Im 50 years old, 5th season snowboarding, all-mountain blue/black cruiser/charger (no park, minimal jumping). Using them has been awesome at my local midwestern hills. I do have to adjust the toe strap every time, but it's still MUCH easier and faster than typical strap in. I give a little hop after i clock in and have yet to fail to click in. I went to Colorado last week and used typical strap ins to avoid any potential issues under more demanding conditions and I really was missing the ease of entry after riding hard, at altitude for multiple days. Ive only used them once so far for snowkiting but they worked as hoped and allowed me to easily launch kite without sitting (in powder). I also crashed in deep powder (flat) and was able to easily eject from my board, straighten myself out and get going again. I also use a dedicated board for snowkiting so the second baseplate works great for switching between different boards and can be rationalized to offset the high cost of the first set. Worst part about them is that i like to be low-key and people want to look, comment, ask, sneer and jeer. I think your criticisms are all valid and i hope Clew considers all of your critical feedback for what i hope will be a 2.0. I plan to update hardware and pick up some spare parts per your suggestion and ride them as hard as i can. Hope they hold up!
Bro is fluent in YAPANESE 💀🚬💨💀🚬💨 Ain’t nobody reading all that. If you gotta write a whole essay to justify a shitty product then just get supermatics.
I was really hoping to see some Randy cameos cruising the resort with his backpack speaker on and then hitting the town with the Clews still on, maybe next time.
I had the 1st version, which on one side was latched with 2 hooks and on the second with 1, I had to do an ollie to fasten them by force. Thanks to marketing, I sold them in 1 day on a local message board. And the same problem with the front strap as in the video

Change out your screws.
@@AngrySnowboarder did that last night! Thank you for this video!
So glad you finally did a review of these before I bought a set
Why were you even looking at these?
Wish this review came out earlier before i bought this😡😡😡
Your review is spot on.
Wow, I knew it’d be bad… but I’m still shocked to see you recommend a Burton product!
thank you for this. I was also wondering why there was nothing but positive reviews and was looking hard for a thorough, honest review.
This is awesome i wish he would go into this much detail on all bindings.
No need. Every other binding manufacturer has all of these little details he picked on dialed pretty much.
Thanks for the honest review! I was thinking about buying these. I had also heard in my snowboard group that someone had issues engaging in powder.
I’m new to Angry Snowboarder and I’m so glad I’ve finally arrived.
Welcome to the party. No flash photography it upsets Kong.
I’ve watched hundreds of your videos, but this honest commentary just got me to finally subscribe!! 😝🤟🏽
The only reviewer we will ever need
I don't know about that.
Always love your honesty, especially with new gear that every influencer is pushing for profit. You are my go to for honest gear reviews.
They’re the worst built of the three.
Ur not allowed to have a positive take, I agree with Angry being they look cheap and are probably, but if they work for you it don’t matter.
"If you hate your lower back - these are the bindings for you" LOL
thx for this best ever review i ve watched.
Lies
Bro the thumbnail has a dumpster on fire there's no way 🤣
I hope this video saves someone.
Your last year video about the CLEW saved me. And yeah I watched the video of ProCamp and Buckhouse and they seems to enjoy it but they are sponsored.
I am getting the supermatic instead and I like that binding.
The only snowboarder on TH-cam that actually knows what he’s talking about. It’s about time someone tells these squids the truth. Get a clew 😀
An influencer riding with this said in a video last week : when you snowboard, you should avoid moguls 🤣
he should with those trash
I know who you're talking about🤣
I can guess who u mean. As a ex snowboard instructor, bro doesnt know how to ride correctly to be teaching it
who is that influencer?
@@cinnabon888 snowboard pro camp
Angry, you are the man, don't ever hold back and always let em know, glad to see somone out there is educating the kids and the adults alike. My 13yr old son asked me the other day why are all the influencers you mentioned Procamp, Buckhouse etc. sprooking these bindings, I told him, they're getting paid to do it and the bindings are most likely junk. Keep up the great work and non bias reviews!
High five that little dude for me and tell him to keep it real!
You spelled defense wrong
@@snowsurfer187I *spelt* defence correctly in English, as in the language spoken in England.
Not the American bastardisation of our language.
If ignorance is bliss, you must be very content.
My friend bought these. He said he’d un friend me off all social media when you drop a review on these Angry. Woke up this morning and he sure did 😅
Doing the lords work.
lmao, was he satisfied with them?
Sounds like a win-win.
That friend really needs quotation marks around him if avoiding buyers remorse is paramount.
😂
I'll admit that you've rubbed me the wrong way in the past with your abrasive attitude about stuff, BUT, this video finally convinced me to subscribe to your channel. Appreciate your honest, no holds barred review. Just don't let me see you with "CLEW" on your helmet down the road!!
I would have stopped to say hi at Copper, but after seeing the hibacks on your feet, I couldn't stop laughing. The shit you go through for us is incredible! Thanks for taking one for the team Avran!
Can’t wait to see how angry he will get on the clew for the crew engineers that have no clue 😂
*no clew
Thank you for this - almost bought these but did a bit more research and decided it’s not even worth getting step-ons, let alone these. This put the nail in the coffin!
Clew - the binding so bad the Avran grudgingly recommended Burton Step Ons.
Are any of us surprised these are POS?!?! I didn’t think so. Thanks for another great review 🤙🏽
To summarize: If a product spends more budget on advertisement rather than quality, there is a 90% chance that it ends up being shit.
great review!! we appreciate you being one of the few real ones
I always appreciate your honesty. Let’s see how well they burn on a fire pit. Wait, never mind, they aren’t worthy of a sacrifice to the snow gods.
Nice to see a more in depth review on these from design/manufacture/materials rather than just the freedom of them
So...all in all, the only snowboard product reviewer we should trust...but we knew that anyway
This is the Angry Snowboarder I subbed to and love.
Im glad you came thru in this review.
I just subscribed ! We need more riders out there giving honest reviews instead of people that say nice things to get free stuff much appreciated
At final a proper review, I saw the same exact reviews that u spoke here, I would love to see a review like this on the Burton step on from u
Keep the good work 🔥
they already reviewed the burtons several years ago and said that they're far from trash, and I think like what some other commenters here've said there's really no need review the burtons as in depth as these, they're made by a well established company that generally doesn't make garbage
@@duncanmn95 yes they have 5 years ago 😂
Since then they did some changes to the system why not a review? 😅
Burton is a well established and respected brand I use Burton since day one I started to do snowboard
@@duncanmn95 following your way of thinking, it's not worth making new reviews every time the latest iPhone comes out, your comment doesn't make sense sorry 😅
The people that buy these bindings, probably dont know that bindings have adjustments. :p
Djeeeez, this review is Longer than any goodride review..
But damn, have I been waiting for this one! Appreciate the time you put into it, the fact that you bought this binding to review it?
Cheers mate, thanks!
Never been a part of a TH-cam premier before. Not sure I’m ready
Even the light of the filming shows that this review is going to a dark place. Thanks for an honest review!
My riding partner has supermatics and they came loose on the lift while wiping snow!
I read it. Thanks for taking away that you need to upgrade the hardware. At least you’re down to earth and understand
I was really hoping to see some Randy cameos cruising the resort with his backpack speaker on and then hitting the town with the Clews still on, maybe next time.
Randy does not use a backpack speaker, he just has a bullhorn and sings Abba's greatest hits.
Will these overpowder my Gilson?
No, but that frosted donut you're trying to shove up your nose will over powder it.
😂
This makes me so happy. I’m finally vindicated for hating these bindings and people promoting them since the the moment I saw them.
OMG you guys. This is gonna be,,,, so much fun.
You don't have a clew!
@@AngrySnowboarder totaly clewless!
I had the 1st version, which on one side was latched with 2 hooks and on the second with 1, I had to do an ollie to fasten them by force. Thanks to marketing, I sold them in 1 day on a local message board. And the same problem with the front strap as in the video
God damn I love a good review rant. No fluff just unfiltered 'Wtf is this nonsense?!'
