Some of your engine swaps are obviously simple eBay listings but this one definitely seems like it might have been a bit more involved.

From what I know, the Up! GTI was sold in the UK, Germany, Japan at least. Here in Ireland VW snubbed us but people have since improved them over. Pricey but a blast to drive I imagine.
I am watching from America, and I absolutely LOVE this channel.... how excited that Blair is about this build! After watching your other channel, I have so much more respect for what you 2 do, and I'm a bit jealous to be honest. Not over your successes, you 2 deserve it! I'm jealous of the connection and relationship you 2 have a mates!! Cheers boys! Can't wait to see this build!
I'm actually so effing excited about this build. Don't like the UP specifically, but taking a little nugget and converting it to a turbo build for maximum ponies just awakes something on a very primal level within me.
Best unboxing video ever guys! You are living the dream my 11 year ood self was, every time my parents bought me another AMT model kit. Always loved those kits for one reason. You could build it one, or a mix of 2 to 4 ways. Stock, custom, vehicle specific packages, factory optio type, era soecific, or custom style type, and flat out, no limitations mad mods. They even included aftermarket oarts, as well as factory parts. Same with their motorcycle kits. And now, you're doing the kind of swap I dream of. Would love to get my mitts on a Barra and a 6 speed, and cut up my 65 Mercury Comet shell, and make a nice little, not quite sedste looking sleeper out of her. Sonething that's, " only got a little six banger in her." And hit the local race night at the track. Road course, but tunable for no prep and bracket races at the strip. With street manners. Love the new project mates. Can't wait for the next installment!
UP GTI SWAP ADVICE!! Hey, I am most of the way through a GTI conversion from a non turbo Up! back in the UK. Let me know if you need any reference photos or advice on routing and pitfalls you’ll find. Love the show.
Cant wait for this! These are amazing little cars. Fyi, still 4 stud, rear disk brake conversion kits are available, there are examples with 180hp here in the uk, some great coilovers are available for them, audi s1 shift knob is a nice Upgrade to add a bit of weight to the shift, look out for the rear wiper seal as they perish and let water in but easy to replace.
Love me some good nugget content, especially when it's disrespected style. Keep up the fun projects guys! I like how attainable this type of project can be for the average person, at least cost wise
During lockdown a friend of mine got a vw lupo 1.0 auto 😂😂🤣 but a few mnths later it emerged from his shed with a 1.8 20v turbo BAM 225bhp engine from an audi and a 6spd transmition 😮 it was epic 👏👏👏👏 to him for creating this car 😊
I’m from the uk You can fit enkei rfp1 alloys on them 16-7j +35 fit perfectly with 195/45/16r tyres. And miltek do exhausts for them Thank me later haha and the intercooler is on top
I am a huge fan of the up! I hired one a few years ago and fell in love! I’m 196 cms tall and have plenty of room in it. My German father told me the three rules of buying cars. German,German and German. I’m in the Uk and want to balance speed with the environment. This is the answer. So excited for this build. I really want to know how it turns out. I was thinking of buying a 60 BHP version and mapping it,but this might convert me to the GTI. Good call on this. The most underrated car of the last 20 years.
Oh boy oh boy. Once you've tuned it and done all the usual upgrades you're going to have SO much fun. Had one for 5 years over here in the UK and still as fun as the day I got it.

Possibly a Hyundai i20N but sourced from around the world and assembled. That will take 27 boxes of stuff and 12 months. No challenge just buying a new one. If they're available.
@@David_Johnson_ as much as I’d love to see that, the i20n is a different weight class to the up, its closer to a fiesta st in performance, whereas Hyundai were meant to be bringing an i10n out to compete with this
Ive been watching you guys for .....at least ten years from the driveway episodes. Just finished watching Moogs journey which was very good.inspirational! Keep it up and thank you for all you've done. ✌🏽😁👍🏽
Oh, I am so exited for this! I've been driving my Seat Mii - same car, essentially - for over three years now and couldn't be happier with any other car (except maybe the electric drive version). It is fantastically fuel efficient the way I drive it and costs me basically nothing to maintain and operate. Really easy to work on and expectedly good V AG design quality. Can't wait for the next video!
Really excited for this as I owned a UP GTI for a few years. Unfortunately, I wasn’t in a position to keep the car and for the rest of my life I will regret selling it. They are proper little hatchbacks and can make 190hp with a exhaust, intake, downpipe and a hybrid turbo. The one downside is there is no option to turn off TC. There is a company in the UK called JBS who managed to crack the ECU and fit a TC button from a golf and that transforms the car
That front panel with the radiator and condenser and intercooler is sold as a "pack" for crash repair which is why its so handy for swapping stuff around. VW have done it for years, I had to do it with my 2006 B6 Passat after a bit of a shunt. Just bought a full front end pack and undid a few bolts and hoses and bolted the new one on. Was maybe an hour and half to get the whole thing done, hoses back on and coolant filled. This is definitely gonna be a great series for me, I've always been a VAG fan and have owned various Audi and VW cars for over a decade. Cant wait.
As soon as I heard Up! GTI, I had to like the video. I just love these little cars. It really is the spiritual successor to the first Golf GTI. With 115 hp, a little over a ton in curb weight and about the same outside dimensions, it's about as close to a modern day Golf 1 GTI as you can probably get. Anyway, can't wait for the build of this little gem ! Now Marty needs to get himself a competitor to this (modern, small, quick, nimble) and race on !
When you rolled the box into shot at the very start I was like “knowing these guys I wouldn’t put it past them to hide a wee Up! in a pallet and then proceed to unbox it” thinking you were away to do some camera trickery. And then. BOOOOOOOM 😍 Can’t wait to see how this project unfolds, Absolute Chef’s Kiss 👌🏽
you gonna have a lot of fun! i owned an up gti for four years and drove it as a daily. i lowered it, throw in some bucket seats, did a remap to around 150bhp and absolutely loved it. looking forward to this series! best regards from germany ✌🏻
Just bought my first Cheryl's big box! Happy to support the channel. My forester would probably be in the bin by now if not for you guys so i figure i owe ya's anyway. Cheers boys!
14:26 I absolutely agree with Marty on the "FWD sucks past 260 hp" idea. I drive a stock first gen Mazdaspeed Axela (Mazdaspeed 3) and the factory 263 HP is already too intense for most normal tires, I plan to keep stock power and focus on the suspension and tire setup to get faster lap times
~300-310HP in a small FWD car is a ton of fun if it has proper hardware for handling and grip. I think that's about where Marty is talking about at 230kw, I dunno, I use freedom units still for power on cars. I have a Nismo RS Juke (traded for two awful condition Nissans and an engine) that was mint, but I still ended up building it up to around 300hp with new suspension and the works for the best handling I could get. It zooms around like a gokart, insane fun for fairly cheap. On the other end, I also had a Caliber SRT4 that the previous owner had...well, way over-tuned without paying much attention to handling. Even stock those cars try to put you into a wall or ditch with torque steer, with the 370hp or so it had, you couldn't really floor it without letting up to stay straight. I've done my fair share of RWD and AWD conversions over the years. I've always avoided FWD until the Juke. My next project is a 4G Eclipse GT to mess around with V6 FWD. I also have a nice 94 2nd gen Probe GT that will be another V6 FWD project.
My mechanic did a 1.8L swap from a polo gti in an up! He tuned and did everything himself and even brought it round the track. The thing absolutely ripped!
MATEEEE! I am so HAPPY right now! I have the same shitbox, not the Gti of course, the MPI lol! And I was so sad when the Up project stopped, and now THISSS! I can’t believe there’s been 10 plus years of watching u guys, and u all are still as awesome as u we’re back then! ✌🏻✌🏻✌🏻
When Moog said “from far away” I was worried my favourite not-available in Aus VW was going to start hitting the MCM tax before I could get one. Keep it UP!
As a Canadian, we never got the Up! but I love little cars like this, and only found out last month while in Germany that the Up! GTI exits and have since fallen in love with them, so I am super excited for this build!
Totally agree with you on having too much horse power with a FWD. I've had a gutless 1980 civic and it was the most fun car I ever owned. Looks like you a gem of a project, good luck with it.
Please look into Picanto GTs. Very similar to polo GTis, being a turbo 3 cylinder manual nugget, but Australian delivered. I own one and it's simply one of the best cars I've owned and driven purely because of how torque-y, light, and fun it is to drive. Best 100 HP. Sick project though, guys 🤙
Cannot believe MCM did this, literally one of the first ideas I had for my channel was to make an UP R (we got the GTI in the UK...obv) but tbh, MCM will do a much better job than I could and I cannot wait to see how this turns out!! mad to think I watched their early stuff whilst working my first job and here we all are nearly 2 decades later *MAD*
As a long term vw tech and big fan of small nuggets we have had many conversation dreaming of up gti’s in Australia 🥳🥳 this will be so sick! Mad jealous! Should honestly be like vw Lego to swap over as well!
Dudes, that plastic front end thing is called a FESM (Front End Service Module) Basically car companies assemble as much stuff as they can off the main prodcution line in moudles then bolt it in and connect it up in one go, saving heaps of time. This one looks like it's gonna be a good one.....chop 'em.
Stoked for this one guys! I'm in the UK and keep catching myself looking through Up GTI classifieds! About as close as you can get to a modern interpretation of an original Golf GTI I reckon.
I ordered my second lot of Merch from you guys last month and its due to be delivered tomorrow. I am honestly so excited 😂😂 Right in time for my new car to arrive Friday.
Really loving these vids of upgrading cars with factory stuff but keeping them factory looking and still being a ground up build. Especially making NA cars turbo so they make all the good noises. Would be nice to see a big NA 4 cylinder build with ITBs and mad induction noise though. cant wait for this one
I wear my Chopped hat all the time & just so Ryobi knows, I have started getting their tools solely based off MCM recommendations, in fact I just got the 600psi HP pressure washer two days ago. Keep the sponsorship rolling Ryobi.
So, the interior, and the whole UP gti, is a throwback to the original Golf gti. I know it's turbo and not NA, but small capacity turbos these days feel like NA throwback engines anyway. Can't wait to see this go together. It makes me all tingly and warm
At first I was UP!set that this UP!load didn’t feature a Caterham. ‘There will be UP!roar’, or so I thought. Now I see that you are UP!keeping the MCM traditions be performing an UP!grade, I feel that I must now be UP!standing.

Thanks guys looking forward to seeing this one😊😊😊😊
MATEEEE! I am so HAPPY right now! I have the same shitbox, not the Gti of course, the MPI lol! And I was so sad when the Up project stopped, and now THISSS! I can’t believe there’s been 10 plus years of watching u guys, and u all are still as awesome as u we’re back then! ✌🏻✌🏻✌🏻
So excited to see this GTI conversion. Drove a polo in Italy with the same engine, should be super fun when you are done.
Love the fact the boys still do capable light fun and affordable cars like hot hatches etc mixed in with the RS3 and built 240z etc never gets boring.
So looking forward to this build! Just mad guys...
This gotta be one of the most mighty cars mods shit ever. Fucking love it can’t wait for more of this series
My favorite series was the conversion of the 4WD Mira and this seems like more of that. Stoked!
Go check out the UP GTI swap I’m doing currently mate you’ll love it!
Charles our Humble mechanic mate would be so proud of the Wolfsburg heratage of this project. Das Auto - Ya Vol Love your box boys
Well you gotta love a little car...where the wiring loom is bigger than the engine!!! Bring it on boys, bring it on!!!
So, the interior, and the whole UP gti, is a throwback to the original Golf gti. I know it's turbo and not NA, but small capacity turbos these days feel like NA throwback engines anyway.
Can't wait to see this go together. It makes me all tingly and warm
My wife said my daughters first car had to be small and practical, as I’d potentially have to drive it…..she now owns an Up GTI 😉 Absolutely love it….
At first I was UP!set that this UP!load didn’t feature a Caterham.
‘There will be UP!roar’, or so I thought.
Now I see that you are UP!keeping the MCM traditions be performing an UP!grade, I feel that I must now be UP!standing.
I thought it was just the one box at first, and my guess was one of those Peel P50 kits haha.
Awesome project cant wait to see it done! But next up you guys should consider getting a mk1 Audi tt 1.8t and modding it.
Even with how many times you meantioned there being Up! videos coming, I somehow still didn't expect this. Really looking forward to this series, bet it'll come out great.
