Daniel Negreanu Says More Rake Is BETTER?!

  • Daniel Negreanu is a big believer in trickle-down economics. Selfish pros have been complaining about the cancellation of player rewards, rake increases, and many other unpopular changes since Amaya acquired Pokerstars. They just don't understand the complex nuances like Daniel does.
Doug explores this issue with an open mind, trying to understand where Daniel is coming from when he insists that nickeling and diming players is great for the poker ecosystem. But the quest to eradicate pros is in direct contradiction to the amateur's dream of some day climbing up the ladder.
Many low stakes players imagine themselves sitting shoulder to shoulder with the legends of the game on the set of High Stakes Poker or in the World Series of Poker Main Event, maybe even the Big One for One Drop, staring down Phil Ivey, Dan Colman, Tom Dwan, and Phil Hellmuth. But with increasingly unbeatable games, that dream is dying.

@@24magiccarrot I think his point went over all your heads, and the guy on the video also. From the AVERAGE PLAYERS Perspective its better to play with HIGHER RAKES because the better players stay away and thus the AVERAGE PLAYERS can just swap their monies around {NOT LOSE to the better players} and pay the RAKE and go home basically with what they started with, minus the rake, and they all had fun.....BUT.....If the had the top players in the Game, they would lose their asses.
Now, while I think Daniel is just bull shitting, and the rake will not stop a pro from taking Donkeys money, I think hes smoked a little too much weed and had one of his DEEP THOUGHTS on the shitter and came out and went with it. But, it was not throwing off on anyone.

By polarizing the game as he says you basically kill the dream of starting low and climbing the ladder cause no one starts very good. One thing that always made poker very interesting for most players was that you could make some money or at least not lose much in the beginning/middle of that learning process. So this good environment he is mentioning tends to make it almost impossible to become good from the scratch.

ive noticed from playing Zoom as my main game this year that in 0.5/1 there are wayyyy less regs. before there were a bunch of average regs and some fish and some better regs, but I think a lot of players quit at the start of the year- as Doug said these would be the rakeback grinders making like 15-20k a year. in the past few years ive probably made around 20k per year so basically I had to either quit or work harder and be better than the other regs, its going well now I'm doing v well at 1/2 zoom.
however, the 0.50/1 zoom game is now far softer than the last 1 or 2 years, ton of fish in the pool and very low % regs. cos I now think that for a lot of players you cant make a living off of .5/1, and for someone who plays after work or at weekends and is small winning player it may be a bit too high of a buy in for them to grind 4 tables.
so now its just mostly fish with some regs, most likely (no offence intended) from countries where the living wage is lower and thus they can still make a decent living.
but 1/2 is the total opposite its like all the regs have moved there, some have moved down from 2.5/5 cos of the rake and rakeback changes and others have moved up from .5/1 so they can have a wage good enough to live from. so, again, I had to just work very hard to be one of the better regs and since then ive had good results. however, some times, especially during the day time in the UK, the games can be very dry so usually there's not much point playing then unless you're busy later on and want to get in some hands. don't get me wrong, at night the games can be very good though.
and its kinda weird some days the games are softer at 2.5/5 than 1/2, cos a lot of the better regs at 500nlZ just totally quit it seems at the end of the year. players such as: Wizardofodds, Sipinho, Cipple. cant think of others off the top of my head but Wizardofodds would literally be grinding every single time, regardless of time of day, in 500z pool. most likely going for SNE. then him and others go from that to just quitting cold turkey. I respected their grind. thanks Stars...
so now the pools like some guys who've kinda came from nowhere and moved up, some decent regs, but definitely not the best ones, and then fish and you get a decent amount of MTT players, especially the high stakes ones, who play and are deff good for the game if you're a reg :P
hopefully i'll be at 500z by the end of the year, but as a 23 yo I don't think there's really any point in trying to go further than that, games above 2.5/5 have ZERO RAKEBACK and consist of a bunch of the best reg's battling each other 3 handed, hoping a fish will join, and then the tables fills with scummy seat scripters (I have never used one.) then as soon as the fish leaves (usually busts) the game just insta ends cos the bum hunting seat scripters leave and then the best regs don't wanna play vs each other cos the rakes too high and no RB so prob -EV for them all to play in (3 handed I mean.) only reason its +EV to play 3 handed with good regs is cos fish may join, so it guarantees them a seat. or unless you're OTB...
so yeah, once I hit 2.5/5 there's prob zero point in trying to go any further, which makes me sad :(:(
    stop killing the dream Stars!!

    • @CloudHugger79

Except taxes goes back to the people, the rake is going to greedy companies.
I live in Scandinavia, and we have free education, free healthcare, and help for the people who CANT work 100 pct (most people would like to have a job and a good salary, but the health denies them that).
USA is a shame when it comes to taking care of its own average citizens, not only the priveledged people and powerful companies.
We dont die in the ambulance while they are trying to figure out if we have insurance here, or while they are figuring out what hospital can take us (insurance again) - we all get the same good threatment.
BTW: what democracy denies a party to excist (the communist party)? A country that is obsessed with money and wealth while being the poorest country in the world when we take national debt into acount.

So, the pros leave because they can't beat the rake, but the amateurs are better off with the higher rake?

I love this vid Doug. As an unbacked MTT/SNG regular I have been suffering since FPP became Dildocoin, Amaya cancelling the 1 million quarterly freeroll, no more bonusses for reaching supernova... You are absolutely right. The poker dream is slowly becoming more and more impossible because Amaya doesn't care about it's customers. The whole point is they wouldn't be as big as they are now, without the regulars. It's just a matter of time until pokerstars dies. You can clearly see it's becoming more and more inactive and the MTT schedule is like a graveyard compared to what it was.
Daniel, I'm one of your fans. You are an amazing poker player. I have lost a lot of respect for you atm. You don't need to defend PS rake increases... we all know they give you your payroll... so surely you don't mind it if they increase their rake. Maybe a little bonus for you? The rich get more rich... what an absolute joke this site has become!
    RIP pokerstars.

they lose on all the odd numbers. It's fantastic fun. You should try it! The Bacarrat games have a commission for BOTH Banker AND Player! I think it's the best Bacarrat innovation I've ever seen!

Laughed quite a bit, good job. I am glad you are vocal about this.
I think that one important thing lot of people forgetting is that it is just not us vs them (pros vs recs). There are lot of formats where pros are playing other pros on regular basis (sadly HU is one bumhunting bullshit and should be punished a lot, its just true, regs are not playing each other nearly as much as in other games, like it or not). 6m hypers regularly keep running with 5 regs and one fish (same as 6m CG)!
So its not like you need huge amount of recreationals to keep these games running.
Yes if you increase rake to ridiculous level, just fishes will play, BUT they will be loosing hard.
So is the "pokerstar" dream still real? Well, it is, but sadly on other sites than PS nowadays.
I absolutely dont buy the argument that higher rake protect beginners. Thats BULLSHIT. I believe there are many other ways to do so.
I wonder how many players would not even play the game, if they would know that they are paying 8% rake on 1USD spin and some pro is paying 5% rake on 100USD spin and what does it actually mean for your winrate.

He talks as if the recs will play with recs now, but really one fish gets rammed by the best pros that can continue to play. Its actually a benefit for recs to be playing with the rakeback grinders with a tiny winrate (who are now forced out).

I don't know how much this applies to online, but I do see what Daniel is talking about in Vegas. $4 rake no drop is the cheapest you'll find in town. The highest is $5 rake $1 drop. Most of the better players gravitate towards the cheaper games, so the more expensive games are softer.

but yeah. i wonder what star's projections were for the impacts of this.
just thinking about it, those pros grinding away are making money for stars, yeah, but enough to justify not raising rake from a business standpoint?
interesting point, that you want stars and pros to be there so people know they can move up, but i wonder what the ratio between grinders and recs really is on stars... there will still be winning players to look up to. there'll still be some people moving up stakes, though you're 100% right in that less people moving up will lead to more people leaving. but if enough recs are still there losing more money then stars will ultimately win.
businesses don't really look to the long run. stars has the highest paying mtts and the most cash games. until another site starts offering extremely huge overlay or attracts grinders over some other way, stars will remain on top. though it is more tenuous. but in the end, the current ceo will have upped that bottom line, he'll get his bonus and share package, and he'll either face it way down the track or more likely be at another company in another sector by then.

good video Doug, it's an important case to make. I quit working to play poker cause I was making more money playing poker than working. but then with changes to the economy of the game and online shutting down in the US and all the sites starting to suck with incentives (and even an increase in live game rakes near me) I had to go back to working cause I could make more money there.
now in today's poker economy you can earn up to $70k-$100k annual but it is VERY HARD to break above that unless you are sick at binking the same tournaments every year or can get invited into big games that are whale heavy.

Dad and I went to Vegas and played about a 10 hour session. After 10 hours I was up $80 and my dad, thanks to hitting quads of the day won a $300 jackpot and broke even. On the way home we got talking, did anybody else at the table win money? I couldn't think of one player in that 10 hour stretch that came out a head. It was insane when you think how much rake was tacking off the table. I was thinking 8 or 9 people sat down and lost their buy in, plus a few bought an extra money at the table. Over the 10 hours I figured the casino pulled over a $1,000 off the table in rank.

In Daniels Netflix Documentary "KidPoker", he says he went broke a few times going to Vegas trying to play bigger games where he was used to crushing fish in Toronto. What does he think would happen if the rake was the absurd amount he suggested for a home game? Would he even have the chance to even make it to his current position in poker if he today was 21, with a $50 bankroll on stars.

What's the big mystery? DN is right, except I think he misspoke when he said they're just passing the money around - it's more than that. Some of the amateurs are still going to win in the short term, but they win more often than if the pros were involved. They don't get as much money they win, because the rake is bigger, but they still win more often, so overall bigger rake is better for the amateurs in terms of their expected winnings.

From one perspective, if huge rake chases out all the pros the game would be really soft. But if the games were soft enough to beat then more rake wouldn't even chase the pros off. So more rake isn't better. It's never better.
