Athers has the same disease me and my dad have - anklosing spondylitis. He couldn’t duck the short ball easily and had to sway. He was always a minor hero of mine as to play top international sport with this disease is hard work. Athers would have been in some amount of pain constantly and had to adapt his techinique as AS messes with your flexibility.
Cricketers with better ethics would have walked after it nicked his glove in the earlier passage of play. If you know you hit it, walk. That being said, if he did, we never would have had this terrific memory and battle/contest to look back on and it would have been "just another test match."
@@j887le8well you’re wrong then … true sportsmen walk .. Athene’s wasn’t … his average is also abysmal .. very overrated cricketer. He was also somebody who was always making excuses for losses … nasser was a much better captain not least because he viewed the losses more objectively and the team learned from their mistakes as a result …
@MorkelErasmus The ball hit his hand that was off the handle of the bat. Which is not out. Whether it hit his front hand as well, I'm not sure? I've only seen 2 quick replays of it
Allan Donald wasn’t even in his prime here but what a bowler he was when in full flight absolutely phenomenal bowler who in his prime bowled way above 95-96mph on a regular basis / Atherton and N Hussain both said after this match this was the most quickest spell they ever faced in test cricket it’s a real shame speed guns weren’t around at that time
they had them but they did not show the results to the viewers on the screen however some notable deliveries were clocked. Like those short pitched deliveries to Atherton were stated to be all above 145kph.
I managed to pop along and see the Sunday post lunch and tea sessions from up in the Radcliffe Road end. Amazing sessions and intensity. What this also fails to show is just how gloomy that day was, incredibly tough facing Donald in that. Also what this doesn't show is just before next over after dropped catch, Donald ran all the way in from the boundary to give Bouch a supportive tap, top team man.
I rememer this classic passage of play Interesting that Atherton hasnt really be cricitized too much for not walking after a blatant glove. Somewhat different to Broad in the ashes. Similar both so obviously out
Ha ha ha. Donald acting like a petulant child because he got a bad decision. Had to laugh when he finally got a big edge and the keeper dropped it. Supposevthey found a way to blame the umpire for that too.
Watching this, I realize we wasted so much time in our youth watching cricket. Learning stock market instead during that time would have immensely changed our lives.
@jasonleesinclair2749 I played Cricket from age 7 to 37, and I never knowingly cheated. Sportsmanship is the very essence of the game. I've no time for cheats.
The hubcap stealer is fielding at square leg, too. He should consider himself very lucky to have played first class cricket, let alone test cricket for SA. He simply was nowhere near good enough.
This small passage of play is great advertisement for test cricket.
😍
Good old days proper tough test cricket still captivating 25 years later
Boucher was impeccable for the whole series I believe up to that point. A really engaging series
I remember watching this live when I was at Uni. Wonderful stuff
Should've shown the bit when Donald told Boucher to keep his chin up. Class.
Athers was tougher than boiled leather. Terrific stuff.

@@MorkelErasmusfor me in village cricket you walk, in pro cricket ESPECIALLY test matches you wait for the umps decision

They did start with them that series but they weren’t very consistent
Interesting aside.... when it was Donalds benefit year at Warwickshire...Athers gave him the glove the ball hit to put up for auction......
Wonderful battle between a truly great bowler and a very, very gutsy batsman. Tesst cricket at its best.
Athers used to say, when making eye contact that the bowler has to turn away first so you might as well get one over on him.
This is when Test Cricket was the best 👌🏼
White lightning was an apt name for Allan Donald. What a terror he was !!!
No doubt
Still scares me at 01;54 …Donald’s reaction…stick your 20 or 100 up your Jacksie THIS is cricket
Look how far Nassar is backing up. Desperate to get down the other end 🤣
Look at Donald NOOOOOOOOOOO! What a warrior!
1:48 I will never forget that drop and Donald's reaction! "noooooooooooooooooo!" lol
Man if i were Boucher i would not have wanted to face Donald back in the dressing room
that roar of frustration after the boucher spill. Thats the stuff you wont see outside of test cricket.
The Boucher drop was absolute bliss! 😂
It was absolute anguish, you numbskull 😅
Wow loved Donald temper n his aggression....
Michael didn't walk off
idiots walk.
Love that British stiff upper lip from Mike
very good technique by Atherton.

That umpire was rewarded handsomely
Athers had Donald in his pocket. Easy days work
Amazing bowling😮
Boy i feel for Donald with that dropped catch, don't blame him for letting rip at all!
No mercy found in this video

Poor cricket from the very English captain!!!

Sorry my comment Boucher sleep behind the wickets
Wish Boucher took the catch of Naseer Hussain, England would have been under more pressure.poor umpiring proved costly here
Savage
Iron mike
Poor guy
England and Australia are most dishonest teams in world cricket but they start crying when they get same treatment somewhere in world
Poor donald
Great blowing
White lightning
Atherton was a cheat on at least two occassions to my knowledge in Test Cricket.
Dirt in the pocket.
Mike Atherton a very stubborn Lancastrian with a great attitude to Donald on fire 🔥
