    The funny thing is that only 40% of this movie is in the unreleased director's cut. And that 40% happens in a very different context. Basically no neon filter, no unnecessary pop song trying to mimic Guardians of the Galaxy's tone, a different 3rd act, Harley and Joker's relationship is more violent and abusive, Leto has some really good and funny Joker scenes (like the one where dr Van Criss tells Joker that if he deactivates Harley's neck-bomb, the other Squad members could die and Joker looks at him shocked and makes him feel stupid cause he thought that the fucking Joker cared about the Squad dying), Harley and Deadshot have a romance subplot, basically Harley becomes the heart of the movie and not just one of the main characters, the whole movie was edited by The Dark Knight's editor and not by a trailer company and Diablo the fucking fire god didn't die because of a bomb . Let's hope WB releases Ayer's Cut cause there's a good chance that it would be really good and apparently the scene in this movie that mostly reflects Ayer's cut is the bar scene before the final battle.

    This was one of the earlier DCEU films which suffered a LOT from studio interference. Unlike Marvel, DC doesn't have a single person in charge of directing the flow of the overall story like Marvel has in Kevin Feige. So each film was at the mercy of the studio execs messing with it like a stand alone film rather than part of a greater story. This movie suffered, along with Justice League, the most from this trend.

    • @davidcelona8167
      @davidcelona8167 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Justice League suffered because its original director had a family tragedy. Then they hired a psychopath who turned it into a cartoon. Justice League Snyder Cut is a work of art. This movie suffered because they wanted it to be a comedy so they hired the trailer company to cut it to pieces.

    • @Linerunner99
      @Linerunner99 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@davidcelona8167 Even if Snyder had not stepped down JL at that time would have been very different. Just one example the studio hated the scene in which Barry travels back in time to before The Unity, and they weren't going to use it. We were always going to get a lesser version of that film because of the DCEU's studio interference and lack of creative direction. Also Joss Whedon was brought on but given zero creative control of the rewrites. Basically he was told what to do and what to change by the studio who had assumed total control by that point. Bash him if you want but Joss has more amazing creations under his belt than most people can ever dream of... the horror story of that film is not his fault.

    The main issue is that David Ayer tried a dark tone but after the success of the trailer, Warner Bros hired the company that made it, that's why the first minutes of the movie have so many songs and a lighter tone, more like GotG.

    Every issue with this movie comes back to two factors:
    1. Geoff Johns doing daily rewrites and demanding reshoots to make it lighter toned and more like Guardians of the Galaxy.
    2. WB hiring the company that edited the trailer to edit the final cut.
    David Ayer has been very vocal about this not being the movie he wanted to make.

    There are a few actors that clearly carried this film to show how much potential it really could have had: Margot (obviously), Cara for her mannerisms of Enchantress, Viola for how well she pulls off Waller and the actor for Diabloe. Rick Flag could have been so much more compelling, especially since June was his girlfriend, it fell flat (at least for me) in most parts. I actually don't mind this version of the Joker as preformative as he is (hate the tattoos especially), with how co-dependent he has Harley, I can see him doing these "honeymoon" manipulative tactics to keep her strung along so that when it does hit a low she'll always stay because these moments, I just wish it was been written out that way. Then it would make sense that the Joker is being performative because that's exactly what it is, performance to keep her at his side, but this might've just come down to the actor's performance.

  • @TeenTyrant
    @TeenTyrant 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    The moment that seems most like the Joker is when he breaks into the place where they make the explosives for the squad members, when he grabs the injector without really even stopping to consider anything about it, and just says “this looks neat” before immediately injecting the scientist with the explosive. Definitely a move that any version of the Joker would do. Beyond that, who he most reminded me of was Tuco in Breaking Bad, what with the teeth, the tattoos, and the random bombastic behavior.

    • @dino747
      @dino747 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      And they deleted a scene where Joker notices that the security guard that took the bomb in his face is still alive, so he takes a hammer and smashes it on his face being like "Are you kidding me? Some people just don't know when to die". Or even a scene where a judge joins his wife in bed only to find out that his wife is actually the Joker who just says "yawn come to bed honey" and scares the shit outta him.

      @@TeenTyrant The way he played him the second time was exactly what I expected from his Joker. The way he calmly pokes at Batman knowing that he's perfectly in control of the room was amazing. The Joker that Jared is playing is comic book accurate but the problem is the "when" and "how many" of it all, most people know Joker as he is now which was perfectly portrayed by Heath But Jared's Joker is closer related to Jack's Joker and to find this joker you need to go all the way back to the original joker. The original Golden Joker wasn't "The Clown Prince of Crime" he was just a brutal mob boss that killed people and left joker cards around, then Silver Age he because a mob boss that killed people and looked like a clown (this will be Jacks Joker in '89 Batman), then we move into Bronze age and this is the joker everyone points to as the definitive joker the Clown Prince of Crime, what Jared does which kills the character is he takes elements from all the jokers and makes a joker soup and that's what we get here, a Mob Boss, playing at being a clown who kills people but he just can't stick the clown aspect.

      The weird thing is that the studio cut out all of the "funny" bits of his Joker. Like him pretending to be a judge's wife laying in bed, the scene where him and Harley manipulate the gangster at the strip club to shoot himself in the head only to comment "smart guy... lotta brains", him killing a security guard with a hammer on his face because he was angry that a bomb didn't kill him, him saying that when Enchantress makes him king of Gotham he will make Batman his vice-president cause they have a story. Maybe my favorite would be when he shows up at the final battle with Waller's trigger in his hand and the Squad is like "nah it can't be, he's not real he died" so Joker is like "ok ok so if I'm not real this isn't gonna blow your heads up" and Deadshot says "no no no no he's real he's real" basically shitting his pants. You make a good Joker by balancing him being scary and him being funny (in his own dark way). If you only try to make him scary you get just an edgy idiot who overacts his craziness (Leto's Joker in this "movie") and if you only try to make him funny you get Cesar Romero's Joker.

    Suicide Squad was supposed to be a "smaller" budget and fun DCU film, but after Batman v Superman was not well received and did not performed as expected at the box office , the powers that be decided to raise its profile, raise its expectations and make it more .... colourful. After the success of Guardians of the Galaxy with the soundtrack they also pimped the film with cool tracks but it was edited like a music video or a trailer. It's soooo cringe.
    The one guys that does not get a double introduction and a soundtrack obviously is not important and dies straight away.

    I think the Jared Leto-Joker negative-hype-train was very exaggerated.
    He doesn't even have the screen time like the other Jokers.
    The film is not in the least on his shoulders as an antagonist.
    His gangster approach is more modern than, for example, Nicholsons.
    There is nothing brilliant about his figure or acting indeed. It's not even possible to work out something like that, as such a minor character.
    But let's be real, it's not a catastrophe either.

    Yeah, the story of this film's development makes Justice League's fiasco look tame. 8 weeks to write the script and finish pre-production, because WB locked in a release date, forcing Ayer to start working on a rushed project. Test audiences not really jumping at its considerably darker initial tone than what we got, nor Joker as the main villain, which meant reshoots. Then, in February 2016, Deadpool releases, massive box office, large fan reception, so WB wants SS 2016 to be more comedic, but also doesn't want it to be R-Rated, which means MORE reshoots that don't change much because there's only so much one can do with a dark comedy that isn't allowed to go full dark, and therefore full comedy. And then the studio made EVEN MORE edits and reshoots in April, less than a month from release, when the second round of test audiences didn't go for the new comedic aspects. Until eventually, you get this film.

    I very much hate this movie as I have issues with how it’s obvious that two movies meld into one. Comedic tones don’t mix well with the serious tones. I think Joker felt like a big weirdo in a bad way and I think would’ve been better if given the time to flush things out. I loved the second movie which was very intent on flushing out the characters, establishing a comedic tone and sticking to it and also establishing worth while relationships. Ik some people say the movie is overrated, or not good but it’s my true suicide squad movie.

    This movie was shot during a time where WB was deciding to bow to the criticism it was getting over the tone of it's DCEU and so this was the biggest sign of the studio stepping in to change up what the Director was doing. A lot of it can be seen in the editing and music choices. But then you have the Oscar winning makeup of Killer Croc and some of the really decent dialogue sections. They even had way more joker shot which could have helped put his performance in a better light. It would be nice to see The Ayer Cut, but I doubt WB is willing to let that happen at this point.

    Ayer has made great movies (End of Watch, Fury... wrote Training Day), he has also made medicore movies (Street Kings, Harsh Times) and one truly horrible movie (The Tax Collector). This falls into the harsh studio interference because they balked at the "too dark" comments about BvS.
    As you said, the first 40 minutes (and that staircase flashback) were so heavily edited to try and condense what was two and a half hour long movie into 90 minutes. According to Ayer, there is enough footage to have made two full length movies and one of them being a film centered around Joker. The music video style was so poorly thought out. And you said it best... it feels like they switched directors half way with the tone and style. It sucks because the potential was there.
    Joker and Harley's relationship was more abusive. He was giving her to Monster T (Common) because he was sick and tired of her. Then felt disrespected by him, and basically forced Monster T to commit suicide. He also beats Harley in the street when she chases him down. Throws her from the helicopter because he forgot how annoying she could be (which is why she tosses away her PUDDIN choker). And then in the showdown, he returns and demands she joins him.
    There was also a lot more of a darker tone with his henchmen, a longer and more brutal Arkham takeover. The scene where he delivers the exploding bouquet, originally had the guard alive with half his face blown off, then getting curbstomped.
    Slipknot actually had an arc as a misogynist who savagely beat women. There was supposed to be a more gruesome version of Incubus (the big bad dude), Diablo was to have survive. There was a scene where Flag and his team are sent to find June who is hiding and being controlled by Enchatress more and more, she is terrified and in a bathtub with flora growing around it. Flag orders his men to leave and he gets in the bathtub and comforts June. Kitana would have gotten more screen time. There was a standoff between the squad as Enchantress pits them against each other... and so much more. Some of this survived in the novelization, while the rest is only known to those who filmed it.
    There was also a lot of inspiration for the characters from the New 52 and Earth One comic runs. Leto's Joker was a combination of The Dark Knight Returns (Metrosexul Marilyn Manson meets glam cown) and New 52.
    There were so many ideas that were just ripped away from a studio that balked.

    David Ayer's got some great films under his belt, it's a shame this film ended up getting chopped up and covered with jukebox tracks. He's known for writing Training Day and directing End of Watch and Fury. All worth watching. The "sequel" cannot be compared to this film as it was made by a completely new creative team led by James Gunn. A few characters return, because they honored the canon, but it is in fact a soft reboot. Harley's story continues in Birds of Prey, between these films, but there's no story given as to how she ends up back in prison for The Suicide Squad. Lastly, Deadshot was supposed to return for The Suicide Squad but Will Smith wasn't available, so you'll find Bloodsport, played by Idris Elba, has many parallels to him but is a new character.
