I have lived in Fontana for 41 years and other than Montclair, the city I grew up in , I wouldn't live anywhere else. I bought my house just on the border of Southridge in 1998 for $142,000. You know it’s bad when the wind is bending doors! I know that the fences there, have to be built stronger than normal, they really beef up the footings for the block walls.
I’m new to the community near Citrus and the 10. First year was hard to give up living closer to LA from Montclair. I’m originally from Dallas, Texas and been living in California since 2014. The temperatures here in the summer are higher than Dallas. The winds are crazy in the winter and during the summer winds start around 5pm-7pm to cope with heat. The winds also help clear out the pollution so you can actually see blue skies and beautiful sunsets in the horizon of surrounding mountains. Several schools near by and when you think about it Fontana is centralized from the Ocean, Dessert and snow in the mountains. The area where I stay is very calm and everyone I had encounter are polite. What brought me here was the cost of the home otherwise I would have been living in Chino Hills. Overall if you just like being in your own space, Fontana is not bad at all just have to cope with winds, heat and a little cold in the winter.
Fontana resident here. Here is my list: #1 reason why not to move to Fontana is the WINDS!! #2 reason, lack of housing options. Thats it. I dont mind the traffic because it could be worse like other cities.
I grew up in Fontana now i live in Pennsylvania way different. I live in Amish country here yes they still use horse and buggy if they are amish but my mom and family are still back home in Fontana right on merrill ave still by the California's sppedway. I miss home Fontana is not a bad place it's a city like everywhere else it has its good and bad . Definitely miss the santa ana winds. I was one of those lucky one to see Fontana bloom i saw the the steelmill was still in use and opening day of the speedway, the build of Ontario mills and Victoria gardens when before it was just endless open fileds of grapevines. The development of Southridge and summit/ north Fontana. The expansion of the cherry, citrus and Sierra on ramps Definitely a good place to grow up in
That is such a great point, every city has pros and cons. You definitely sound like you got to see a lot of the growth that happened here in Fontana. How long ago did you move there? (crazy though, I thought the Amish using horse and buggies was only in the movies these days)
We purchased our Southridge Home Brand New in 1986. Well sort of, it wasn't even built yet. 4 bdrm, 2 bath and 2 car garage. 1,800 sq. ft. for a cash price of $89,999, you can't find that around here anymore. There was very little here in South Fontana at that time (mostly just homes) and we have seen a lot of changes. According to the City Council back then, this was to be the "ELITE" neighborhood with our own Shopping Centers, Police Station, Fire Station, Schools and Parks. The City Council painted quite the pretty picture for us, and it was nice for a while. It took what seemed like forever to get the promised amenities and before that happened they voted to allow low income apartments to be built. The area went downhill from there. We raised our family here and have seen our ups and downs with Gangs, Crime and City officials who at times seem to have forgotten we are here. But still we remain because over all it's not the worst place in So Cal to live .
Today it's almost impossible for people to imagine you could ever buy a home here in So Cal for $89k. Unfortunately though I've heard stories like yours from people in a number of cities now about how plans for the community changed over the years because of changing city leader.
Lived here my whole life, sadly had to move out of my child hood home there, but it wasn’t perfect, kids on my block wore bullet proof vests and sold weed on the corners, and the homeless people plus the tagging and other things weren’t very nice.
