      Might not be that surprising in the end considering that a lot of developer work is just like this - finding solutions to problems born out of necessity or ease of use. Might be a miracle that their games come together as finished products, and to be certain a lot is black magic buuut, well, lets take for instance the NPC terminology.
      It might be confusing to say that the kite is an "NPC" considering we usually attach that kind of behavior to shopkeepers in RPGs or quest-giving robots in any kind of genre. In reality, using the acronym's meaning "Non-Player Character", it might make some more sense how this works technically. Picture the game engine as a puppeteer, and the Non-Player Character scripting as the kind of strings. In Unreal Engine, for instance, these scripts are referred to as an NPC Controller - because that's just what it is. A Character object controlled not by the player, but by the engine.
      So the kite being an "NPC" is just engine language for it being an object that has more advanced ability to "interact" with other objects in the scene via scripts. A puppet and its strings, whereas a regular object would just be a block on one string. Easier for the PC to handle, but you can only do so much with a block.
      Or the train detail in Fallout 3 mentioned above, I've seen some people refer to this as an example of Bethesda taking a big hit of that Bugthesda stuff, but its way to the opposite effect. Why make a full-on moving train that's scalable by framerate without running into collision messes or LOD fuckery by the train static moving away from its origin? You're putting so much strain on a 30 second sequence to be riddled with more testing, redoing, a new *engine function*, even, just to have a train for all of a minute.
      So why not just, like, bypass that entirely when you already have a system in place that can move at whatever pace you want? Its hilarious, inventive, and best of all - the sequence worked perfectly, if you just played that sequence it may as well have been a regular-ass train!
      Game dev is a lovely topic, hope you all have a great day!

    I noticed a little something that might interest you: the hollows in cathedral of the deep seem to be able to block arrows, even if they dont have a shield. they normally dont, but shooting an arrow at them causes them to suddenly switch behavior and act like shielded hollows, holding their bare arm in front of them. that isn't all though: I got a nice "wooden shield sound" out of at least one of them, so i think their shield might actually work, but that was right after a falling animation, I haven't done anything close to extensive testing yet, so Idk under what circumstances it does. "'It's a lot weirder than I thought" is a sentiment that can be stated for anything From does. They have a very interesting and reactionary method of making games, but there's nothing really wrong with that. "Make a piece of scenery an NPC to get around object limitations" probably saved their butts back on Demon's Souls, and I expect they've tried to come up with better solutions since but keep going back to that because it WORKS.
    It does make me wonder just how many other really bizarre design/development decisions are still lurking in their games waiting to be marveled at.

      You might like it, the programmers and the designers must be pulling their hair out working with this outdated engine. It's not about whether stuff works or doesn't at the end, but how long it will take and how much you have to stretch resources to make it happen. As a developer myself, I would dread working in such an environment, and I'm not surprised almost every game coming out of that studio is drastically unfinished.

    Perhaps they thought it would be easier to have an unprogrammed / unscripted NPC that just sits there as a placeholder, then to try to take the NightJar Ninja with all of the character AI and code it to function as both, maybe? I feel like this is a common animation characteristic that occurs in pretty much every game. One animated or non-animated object get's "swapped" for another at the right time (point of bullet/sword or whatever other type of impact) to basically act as the finishing animation of the object/npc in reference. Like, when you shoot a character in the head in most games now, the npc's original head disappears for about a half-second and then the "exploding / splattered" animated head takes it's place, but a person would probably never notice unless they paused it at the right time. This is why I am excited for the game "ILL", which is supposed to have actual, character destruction dynamics! I hope that game actually gets launched some day.

    Does he just sit in the kite all day?
    How doesn't the fall kill him? I would certainly kill me.
    How does he glide? He left the kite behind!
    Why doesn't from From Software do mounted NPCs?
    Does "Woo Guy" have a dog, and if he does, can we call him "Woo Doggie?"

    I know this isn't exactly a part of the Soulsborne-type content you normally do, but I thought it was a similar enough game series that I may as well give it a shout-out in case you actually found yourself interested. The Nioh series is what I'm talking about, it's got all sorts of cool environments and interesting enemies that I feel would be worth taking a closer work at, whether just visually or more mechanically like with this video. Though, regardless of whether or not you end up taking a look at it, interesting vid as always Zullie!

    • @knowlessman
      @knowlessman 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      With the random MtG vampire production history video the other day, I'm honestly starting to worry she sees the SoulsBorne well drying up until Elden Ring comes out (and then until she gets the tools to start hacking into it, and maybe then until it's been around long enough that fans aren't worrying about spoilers...).
      I do hope she's thinking of picking another game/game series to turn to for content if that happens. I guess then, though, the question comes up as to whether she sees any one other game/series as worth that gamble; she'd probably have to start at or near Square One learning how to hack into and view the processes of a completely new game engine. Her content generally isn't as simple as Shesez's Boundary Break, with its surface-level look at whatever graphics or geometry is floating around hidden from the player.
      EDIT: Meanwhile, the sheer cash a corp like WotC will throw at somebody to advertise for them might be enough to offset any initial dip in subs/ad revenue. Such are the cold calculations people have to make to survive under capitalism.

    I love how some games have the mechanisms and gears showing through a bit, like Skyrim… as you play, you begin to understand the game engine underneath and see the gears turn to make things happen or cause glitches. Skyrim and other Bethesda games are a clunky old Jalopy. We love that old rustbucket even though it takes ten steps and a few kicks to get the engine running.
    Other games like From Soft games are so well polished that it feels like magic, until you poke just below the surface and you can see everything! Beautiful simplicity, amazing craftsmanship and extreme complexity all working together to maintain the illusion! From Soft games are Kabuki theatre! You just see flying ninjas and magic demons until you turn on the lights and see a bunch of guys in black running around throwing ribbons at each other and carrying people across stage! Haha it looks janky at first view, but you can see how perfectly choreographed and well synced everything is, to hide the stage and tell a great story.
    Other games like RDR2… Rockstar wanted to be the Rolls Royce of video games for some reason and add details no one asked for… “Why is there a hidden umbrella in my door, and a magic phantom that comes up out of a handmade complex mechanism on the hood?!” “I dunno. It’s cool tho! Right?!” Is the same as “Rockstar, why did you make the horses balls shrivel up in the cold and why were there so many animations of skinning animals and turning pages…?! This is a cowboy action game!” “Uhh.. I dunno. It’s cool tho, right!? He actually uses the stairs… and and.. the mud.. and uhm.. MIRRORS! and” “Enough, Rockstar… enough. Obviously I’m going to buy it. Calm down.”

If the kite "dies" before it launches the woo guy, can it spawn the woo guy?

    • @PunSenpai
      @PunSenpai 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think she was trying to say that the Nightjar model is part of the kite NPC and that the kite basically has an animation that causes the model to disappear when you get into attack range. This is done at the same time as the actual Nightjar NPC is teleported to the kite and then sent flying towards you.

    This is basically every game / software etc. in a nutshell. Devs come up with workarounds like this all the time, me included. When you encounter software limitations but also care about your work, you gotta do your best :D
    Here, the devs could just make the NPC ONLY appear out of thin air but instead they wanted to add that small detail so that you can actually be prepared for the attack if you see the static model. Or you'll just know that he was really waiting there when you later check him out.
