Does BMW make their cars intentionally ugly?

  • While BMWs generally look nice, their kidney-grill design is controversial to say the least.
However, we might see a new grill design according the new Klasse X Concept car!
Abandoning the kidney grills entirely after only five years is weird, and many others have noted similarities to 'New Coke' from the 1980s.
Let me know what you think!

Clarification: Carmakers are unfortunately required to only sell “Carbon Neutral” cars in the EU from 2035 onwards. It’s possible that carmakers such as BMW continue to sell ICE cars in other markets.

Up until recently, I had always thought BMW had the most boring but most grown up, most aesthetically pleasing car body sculpting: unlike other German high brow brands (Audi, Mercedes Benz, Porsch, etc), I was thinking... that BMW maintained a fairly traditional, sensible ("user-friendly") BOX-LIKE car body architecture, a car design you don't have to twist your body like a gymnast to into or out of...
To me, the M5 epitomized that boxy-4-door super sedan more than any thing.
To me, the M5 has always been the most beautiful, of all 4-door super saloons, despite some of the bullshit on rear/trunk metal sheet design now and then over the years.
And, then, I took a look at the projected 2025 M5 and my face turned completely sour.
I couldn't believe the classic M5 (which $150K+) actually morphed into a cheap, "sporty" $20K - $35K Toyota or Nissan look-a-like model made for teenagers, with the ugliest front being riddled with all kinds of twisty, ugly cheap plastics going every which way....
Contrast that teenage grill-area, BMW M5 (2025) design with Porsche or Merced's top sport cars made for "boring" but grown man .... like the AMG GT 63, the Porsche Panamera, Porsche 911, etc. Those "boring" classical AMG GT and 911 designs are exquisite! They had been from the START decades ago & that's why they have changed only in very tiny details in MANY DECADES!
Grown, older, established men and women like a sense of class, a sense of tradition & assured stability.
The reason why only two dozen plus $500K - $1M Lexus LFA, etc. sold in the entire world is NOT because they too expensive; nor is it due to Lexus' next level technologies. Rather, it is because most of Lexus top models, from 4 door sedan to 2 door sportsters are so damn ugly.
When a car is displeasing to the eye, of the majority of people, even most of the very rich people who could easily buy many $1M cars don't buy them... it doesn't matter if you say it has more tech in it than most flying aircraft!
Again, I have no idea why BMW is suddenly doing a Lexus bullshit in sheet metal/body architecture... when, up to 10-15 years ago, both BWM and LEXUS used to be two of the most conservative, most sensible, solid-looking car designers among top car companies...

I thought I was the only one who didn’t like the grills. It just looks like big nostrils.

i just noticed again that manufacturers are paying a lot of attention and money to things that are totally over the top. like this 3d cockpit, nobody asked for that. it's a misconception especially among german car manufacturers that things have to be overloaded with tech to be attractive to buyers. not much else to invent i guess. another thing to notice is that the grill designs in general became a major key in cooperate design since audi went that way. it is mostly aimed on supporting brand identity but that goes wrong already since too many cars look too similar. BMW seemed to try this and actually expected it to be appreciated. the risk of dropping out of markets is too high here. and then the audience it is meant to cater. yes china is there but product fetishistic instagram people more than that. having that in mind there adds up the last point to notice. the most complex structures in a design are found at front and back nowadays, sides turn flatter and loose shapes and curves generally speaking. this makes it possible to produce on a lower energy production line, smaller machines. plastic parts can be as complex as wanted here. just take a bunch of suv's crossover and so on and see them from the side. hard to tell them apart.

Let them continue making only evs. The market is saying that there is some percentage of buyers that want ev, but most do not. They are shooting themselves in the foot going ev only.

I think it looks good but that just my opinion what pisses me off tho is almost everybody hating on them new grills not because they hated how they looked but because journalists said so, it kinda became a trend and everybody jumped on . If u are familiar with football this is exactly like the memes about harry maguire that carried on even after he started performing simply because it became a trend not because it is accurate
Ps: love the thumbnails, a work of art

Couldn't agree more. The kidney grills have really grown on me and I don't mind them at all actually, but if I say that in a video, nobody would watch it. (According to my research at least!)
      Lovely football example as well

Ur wrong about the part of bmw having a fully electric lineup by the 2030s. definently some parts will be fully electric but hydrogen and petroll will still be there. Other parts of the video I do agree on.

You're right! I should've been more clear. I was referring to the 2035 EU regulation, which states 'Starting in 2035, all cars sold in the European Union will be zero-emission vehicles.'
It is definitely possible that BMW will sell ICE cars in other markets.
Thank you for point that out :)

So why don't they make a ROW (rest of world car) built on the same platform? It couldn't be that hard. Someone made a new front bumper/grille for the G8X M cars and they are not manufacturers so I can't see how it would be difficult for BMW to do so. They keep doubling down on bad design which is mind boggling. I don't know why people think electric cars have to be ugly to differentiate themselves from internal combustion cars. BMW does not care about the North American market any more. There was a time when BMW could do no wrong. They used to be cars to be lusted after. Now they are just cars for clueless people that still think that BMW is a luxury brand (its not its premium at best).

Still ugly. Proportions of the tiny SUV grill still off, just in a different way

I think it’s more concerning they are getting away from ICE. Long road trips in a electric car is very inconvenient

    • @marcsinan.
      @marcsinan.  21 วันที่ผ่านมา

Yeah, I feel like that is the biggest reason why people just don’t even consider an electric car. Charging times are improving massively, but there aren’t enough charging stations.
Especially when most carmakers will have a 100% electric lineup in the next 10 years. 🤷‍♂️

ICE cars are not going anywhere...Electric car values are plummeting and will never recover, at the worst, we'll be driving hybrids, not electric! Electric is not sustainable

If they hire me, I can give them some straight forward beautiful designs made with straight forward traditional drawing, computer used, clay modeling processes. But the issue is that gen z ( I'm one ) customers think such characterless designs and 'cuber puke' designs are cool. They won't accept a traditional elegant timeless design since majority thinks such designs are not ' attention grabbing ' and easily forgettable.
Well, Tesla is the clown. I bet when the ' designers ' at Tesla are asked to create a design, one of them sleepy five year old 2077 players go inside and bring back a soft wood block and a knife, toss the wood up in the air, swings the knife wildly , whatever the ' shape' they get when the block hits the ground, they implement that 💀
But they were soo sleepy and lazy when they designed, cuber puke truck, they just cut the corners off of the block and for detailing they copied a coffin. Don't belive me ? One cyber truck is equal to half a coffin. Two of them gives a full coffin. ⚰️

Firstly, the EQS is sexy. People say it's ugly but when you see one in person, it has a wow factor. Same with the M4. Photos not doing these cars justice is no excuse however because we live in an age of IG. I think the Coco Cola marketing hype maybe be just the ticket BMW needs though cause everyone will go nuts when they finally get rid of the beaver teeth 👍
