    I was born and raised in Chicago, but after working 12 years in the financial Industry regulating the futures and options markets at the CME/CBOT I decided to pursue my passion fishing professional tournaments and left my full time corporate job. At that point, I moved to Junction City, WI with my wife Sara and two boys Hank and Duke. I've been fishing professionally since 2011 and full-time since 2015. I've qualified for six MLF Championships and won roughly a half million in tournament winnings at the professional level.

    Jig skipping immediately opened up for me when I realized two things…first, you don’t *need* to roll cast. As a matter of fact, watch a lot of tourney pros quickly work the bank and they’re just tossing it underhand a lot of the time. Secondly, it’s ALL about trajectory…release low and parallel to the water. That’s it…you’ll be skipping within minutes as soon as you get that down.

    I’ve had other people explain it to me. But you gave some details that nobody’s ever mentioned to me thanks again

    ima say this reasonS why i always use 12 pound monofilament , in my opinion 1.Monofillament is incredibly forgiving and cooperative so it doesnt get tangled and back lash , unlike spider wire and braid , 2.perfect for flipin and pitching 3. does not backlash or have the tendency to want to backlash and get into a birds nest causing the angler headaches.

    Good stuff! I sure need to improve skipping jigs with baitcasters. I skip senkos with spinning reel all the time and I’ve found the challenging places the average fisherman can’t access to be very productive areas. As you said, practice is the key!

    Another great video Matt! Suggest folks use Mono in 15-17 lb when learning. Backlashes are expensive with Floro. Agree once you have the hang of it, then use Floro! Another tip is to use electric tape and pull out about 100 feet and attach electric tape so as to not blow up the whole spool. That's what I do here in Raleigh NC

    The first day I tried skipping a jig was one of the best days of my life. A Diawa tatula reel, a 6' 10" st croix cranking rod, and 65 lb braid. (Per Greg Hackney)
    Two limits of bass later I was grinning from ear to ear and really didn't backlash as bad as I thought I would.

    Looks like one of your 873s would be perfect for this technique which is what I want to get from you. I would really like to try and get good at this technique.

    Taught myself to skip a baitcaster using a Texas rigged 6” Senko. Gave me confidence to move up to frogs and jigs

      Texas Rigged. Used the owner hook with with the screw in CPS spring. Keeps the bait on the hook when skipping

    I've watched a couple dozen videos about skipping. Watched Swindle make it seem ridiculously easy. I've practiced in an indoors hall. I've practiced from a pier and from the boat. I'm a little better, but man, skipping a lure is a difficult technique to master.

    Matt, Thanks! Would you recommend a shorter rod like a 6'6 than a 7ft?

    • @MattStefanFishing
      @MattStefanFishing  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      i dont like going shorter than 7 ft...but im also 6'4" tall so it fits me well

  • @bradleykegley3373

    For starting out, do you recommend a full spool of line? I've heard only put enough line to make your longest cast, I've also heard full spool and put tape on after about 50 yards. What you think? I tried learning at the very end of the year using a quantum smoke reel and I spent more time getting back lashes out lol

    • @MattStefanFishing
      @MattStefanFishing  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Fool spool for sure. Start with the brakes tightened down a little if you want to prevent full backlashes, but the reality is you will skip further with fewer brakes on and more thumb control.

      The tape on the spool helps. Make a cast, pull a couple armlengths off, put the tape on.

    I skip lures regularly, so no issue with the technique...however, what reel would you recommend that has better than average spool control like you're talking about?

      My two favorites are the AbuGarcia REVO MGX and the REVO AL-F

    When skipping, are you putting slight tension on the spool from the start or after your bait first hits the water

    How does a non-boater skip with a motor in the way or the seats? Is there a way for the fisherman in the back of the boat to skip and if so How???
