I’ve watched a lot of videos on skipping and do it myself on almost every outing but I have to say, you have it down like nobody else. That video you did using normal, backhand, non dominant hand forward and backhand was just crazy. Truly impressive!!
I have a lot of fond memories of fishing as a child and also watching bassmasters on TV. I am 58 years old. I couldn’t afford my first boat until around the age of 36. I fished hard for a lot of years basically knowing nothing. So many things I do are self taught. I am a master at another craft. I also teach. What I am getting at is this. You are gifted. You have the ability to explain things and demonstrate at a very high level. You’re going to go far with this. Hey, my youngest daughter is having my 5th grandson this summer and he is already named Finn. She came up with that on her own. I need an infant size Finn T-shirt made.
I gotta be honest. I ran into one of your educational video randomly. Now I am a huge fan. I’ve improved so much with my baitcasting. Now I’m working toward skipping. I truly appreciate your videos. By FAR the best at teaching and explaining exactly what you’re doing and why. I watched a pond video you posted and I actually used what you taught today. Corners and points. THANK YOU!!!
The tape tip may be one of the best tips I’ve ever heard! I’ve also thought of rod tip action backwards so thanks for clarifying what a fast action tip is!
I came upon your videos by accident. Thank you ! I wish these type instructional videos were around 40+ years ago. You’re truly a master at fishing. And an incredible master at instructing others how to do it ! Excellent job ! Please continue! 👍🙏🥰
@@nsmturbo5902 I get really lucky sometimes, but definitely not consistent enough for me to consider myself someone who "can skip". I'm mainly someone who "accidentally skips" sometimes
@@nsmturbo5902 made few good skips, he makes it look to easy! One of those skips was in a drain that connected ponds, the fish crushed it before it hit bottom. Worth learning!! High brakes and back down helped me with confidence on what my reel can do, you wont get good range at first but will as you lighten brakes up and get the feel.
I really appreciate the tips. I fish from a kayak and I believe it is actually easier to skip because I am so low to the water. I've been working on this every time I've been able to go out on the water. The tape thing is going to save me a bunch of time. I didn't think of that!
I fish from a kayak as well and I'm the opposite, tougher for me to skip in it. Positioning seems to be more important in kayak. Skipping with baitcaster have not tried much, guess I will need to work on that.
I watched a lot of videos on skipping with a big caster but yours are the very best. No one ever seems to mention that they have to thumb the real Or when to start thumbing it.
Really appreciate your content, I find your information very informative and it from a different perspective than a lot of other people I follow but it also helps me notice similarities of things that'll actually work in my bodies of water up here in the Pacific Northwest, Idaho
I know you have so many people comment, but I have really learned and taken your help and really applied it and you have helped me so much. Thank you brother. Because it has helped me catch fish I never have caught before.
Awesome vid. Just started practicing skipping a Yum Dinger with a spinning rod. As soon as I get a new casting rod (4 pounder smoked my Chatterbait the other night and broke my rod tip) I'll get out and start skipping jigs! Thanks for the knowledge, I'm off to get the tools!
Great video, very informative The only questions I have are: -how far should your boat be away from the dock/bank? -if a backseater (co-angler) is trying to skip a jig and there’s Talons in the way and isn’t great at backhanded skipping, what would you suggest that angler try to do in that situation and position?
Love watching your videos, the biggest thing is you really need to be in a boat . I think I mentioned this on one of your other videos. It's kind of harder to do from the bank, especially if you have trees around you or someone next to you, like someone who talks to much and gets on your nerves lol!
Talk about skipping like a boss you definitely have the skills. Just got one of those Bruin ELS reels today and put line on it a little bit ago. Gonna try it out tomorrow morning and see how it goes. Seems like a really good reel, very smooth.
Excellent tutorial Tyler...thanks. I'm new to the sport and only fish from the shore so the need to skip a lure hasn't really presented itself thus far. I'll certainly be practicing the technique so I'll be ready when I do need it.
Skipped a jig and a worm for the first time today, what a cool thing. It took me about 2 weeks fishimg everyday to get it but once you do it's easy to do
I tried skipping with no research and obviously it was a birdnest mess lol. You've broken down skipping so amazingly I'll need to give it another try. 👍 Ty for the great content.
I picked up a super small spool for my baitcaster, holds maybe 85 yards of 8 lb test to try and learn skipping. I fish from the bank and there are a few overhanging bush areas I really wanna try to target.
You have to be one of the best at skipping bait's next to Andy Montgomery I really love what you have done with the channel I can skip my bait but not the way I see you doing it in this video but keep the great videos coming buddy and I will keep watching and learning from them
Electrical tape awesome tip works well. Skipping works over submerged cover well. Even around bait in open water. Overlooked by people looking for the soft entry but mimics fleeting baitfish and can load the boat when the fish are a bit negative. Great video. Seem like YOU could skip a Roman Made mother.
There is no doubt your skipping and other fishing techniques are very impressive. I am a huge fan of your videos and often watch them before many others. I appreciate your guidance and tips as I have ventured through the baitcasting relm this past year. Skipping is the latest process I am trying to learn. I will say that I am curious which knot you use to tie jigs.....
Excellent presentation, well done my friend. Lots of detailed information which is where success is, in the details. Seldom does anyone mention the weight needing to be heavier, which helps in the process.
I’m just learning how to use a baitcast, someone was throwing it out. Getting there. When I was younger I would get on a knee and skip panther martins with a “closed face reel. Hit some nice trout. I’ll be skipping the free baitcaster for sure, with some electrical tape.
Is anyone designing a skip head jig? I'm sure they have but this is definitely great information. I started by skipping my frog and now working on jigs. Thanks for the video! 🎣
I think my best piece of advice would be to pick a reel with magnetic brakes instead of centrifugal. Shimanos with their centrifugal brakes are distance casters but can get squirrely when you skip with them.
Another awesome video. Also, thanks for the floating worm trick. Second cast on that technique and I snatch one out of the shade! Would you think about a video about when to throw every type of topwater?

I have been practicing the skip. But it hasn't been that great for me. I have been using the swim jig. A had a good day last week with doing it. But that was really it. And damn does it feel amazing when it goes right. But I will keep at it. And how do you like those Bruin bait casters? Are they really good? Is it worth the 180.00? Or should I grab a Shimano SLX DC
love the video bro ive been working on perfecting my skipping since last fall and have made tons of headway. just got a question about the trailer. i use a number of dif trailers and when i skip i prefer a beaver just because the wider/flat body. i do also use the craws, but my question is why do you use the rage craw instead of the rage craw craw chunk? after you bite those sections off thats what it is lol.
Question here!!! I know this is a jig skipping video but sinse we're on skipping... I picked up a couple packs of Bounty Fish to try out, and it took me a while to find a hook big enuff for them and picked up some "Gama 7/0 EWG Monster Worm hooks" and the bait immediately sinks! Can I get a hook recommendation on something that can handle a frog rod from anyone?
A word about weights…I think it’s best to learn how to skip everything in your box, weight-wise. Heavier jigs might be able to skip a bit further but it won’t mean much if the fish are looking for a slower fall. Skipping 1/4 and 3/16 finesse jigs isn’t that bad…the only caveat is that you want a medium heavy rod or an ULTRA high end heavy rod that can handle lighter baits. My favorite jig rod is the conquest 844c, by a landslide. It’ll *easily* cast/skip/pitch anything from 3/16 up to 1/2oz and beyond. I believe it’s rated up to 1oz but I’ve never taken it that far, personally. If you aren’t looking to spend $500 on a rod (never pay $700 for a conquest), your favorite medium heavy will get the job done nicely for lighter jigs. I LOVE the NRX 803c for skipping/pitching finesse jigs. You can get those rods used for a reeeaaalllly good deal because they aren’t nearly as sought-after as some of the other NRXs. If I remember correctly, I paid $300 for mine…or you can use an Abu Vengeance. Who cares, man…they all catch fish…
I have a question, why do so many Americans who are right handed use the left handed crank? In right handed, so I throw right and crank left, I don't have to switch my rod to the other hand for cranking and not back for throwing. It just seems so counter intuitive to me.
I theorize this personal preference as people who do this may have started off with a rod that had this set up, and thus, got used to this kind of set up. I personally use the way you described, right handed but have the crank on the left side of the reel, but my fishing buddies like it the other way so we tend to get in a heated argument about this lol
