    I've had one for ages. I got it to print physical images of my family life, display them on the wall for a couple of months then put them in an album. My kids can then rediscover the albums later, like i did when I was a kid. The bottom line is no one is going to gather around the harddrive or cloud storage in later life to reminisce.

      Same here, print regularly and stick them in a cheap rodalm 18x13 frame from Ikea an then collage the frames them on the kitchen wall. Easy to swap out, a nice 'family life' wall.

    One other benefit of the Selphy is that the ink never dries out and clogs the heads. The dye sublimation method means that the printer can stand unused for months - and still produce a perfect print.

    • @peterjamieson263
      @peterjamieson263 9 วันที่ผ่านมา +7

      That's a big plus for me too. I don't use my 15-year old inkjet printer often these days and the amount of ink lost "cleaning" is quite large. Manufacturers' specs and reviewers don't seem to cover this so I still don't know if that has changed with modern printers, especially ink tank printers.

    I bought a Canon pro 100s in 2021, it was a massive learning curve for me. I spent many weeks trying to get the colour profiles as near as possible for my Fuji xt-2 and lumix s5 and of course the paper profiles. But it was so worth the effort. There’s nothing better than seeing your images, come out in print form!

    keep a reminder, dye sublimation prints do not do well if exposed to light over a long period of time. If you do use them, make sure you utilize a uv protected glass in your frame. It takes about 5 years or so o start seeing a change. So if you are using them for client prints, rethink and use standard e-surface type prints. As for using them as a way to test print to see if you like it... they are fantastic tools.

    • @ErwinvanAsperen

      @@ErwinvanAsperen it does help, but nothing can win against UV light. Dye-sub printers have been using a clear coating since the late 90's, for uv and water protection. Newer printers may have a more durable formulation in the dye, that may improve longevity. I have found in my 30 years working with all types of media ( as well as working for a company that used all types) silver halide is by far the most durable, then dye based ink jet printers next. Of course, the only way to preserve any print is to make sure it's mounted and behind uv protected glass.

      Dye sub is also great for personal photo albums as the total light exposure is basically nil (since the album is closed 99.999% of the time) or personal prints where it's no big deal to reprint occasionally. I've had a selphy printer since 2012. Been a fantastic cheap way to print my photos over the years, for a variety of uses. I even used it to produce on the spot prints at my daughter's trampolining birthday party to pop in the party bags - got big kudos marks from parents. (wasn't my intention)
    You mentioned about the paper type and thickness. I'd suggest, as this printer uses thermal ink transfer, the thin glossy paper is the optimal substrate for transfer. I'd image thicker paper wouldn't produce such good transfer results. Switching to a matt paper type could require completely different settings and profiles, which would then make this device more complicated and potentially more expensive.
    Great to see you shine a light on this great affordable option.

    Oooh, I have one of those. It was a little xmas gift to myself. And it is really fun to use, and exactly what I needed, for a variety of reasons. You see..in early September 2024, my dad passed away very unexpectedly. Things have been tough mentally since but getting easier gradually. On Christmas, me and my brother picked up mum and spent the evening with her and with our wives because there was absolutely no way that we would leave her alone over the holidays. She needed the distraction. We shot loads of photos that evening, goofing off while cooking. I printed them right away and gave them to my mum and my brother. And mum said "I have never laughed so much on any christmas". And some the pictures are now sitting in frames. It was a good way of giving memories a physical form. And the picture of my mum laughing is probably my "shot of the year" for 2024.
    I also got a battery pack so I dont have to faff around with cables and such. Highly recommended. And no, you dont need the Canon branded one. Because that is about as expensive as the printer itself, which is ridiculous. And I can absolutely confirm the slight green hue. I can also confirm that it does not matter one bit.

    Great vid Thomas! I discovered these couple years ago and had a great bunch of prints since then. Paper is glossy-ish but there is an option in the printer to make it matte. I think it coats the paper with another coat or just "roasts" it. I prefer the glossy. And I agree, the colors might be off sometimes, but for the most part pictures are fine. Maybe too much of an "iPhone" look to them, but that is what a lot of people like.
    Mine is a previous generation, it does not work as well with computers, but still prints perfectly from memory cards, flash drives and such. I would recommend anyone get them. For some reason these printers are so underrated. They have been around for ages, I think this paper/"ink" type is soon to be 20 years old. Canon had panoramic wide paper they discontinued several years ago. Such a pity. But maybe if we show them some love...

    As always, great video. Two tips from my side.
    1. In the menu you can dial in a very basic colour shift it’s like five clicks away. I compensate the green tone with the manuel shift every time. Way better results, especially for skin tones.
    2. The glossy paper is also the Matt paper. And the printer menu, you can choose a surface finish for your print. In the printer cartridge there is a transparent fourth colour included that is making the matt surface.
    Regarding the last video you made about the printer, I have a bonus tip for you from mounting your print inside the frame .
    Tape your print just on the upper edge in the frame because the paper will expand and curl a bit if you tape them on all four sites .
    If you just tape it on the top edge, the paper has the room to expand due to humidity in the air, and your print will be straight inside the frame.
    I hope that helps 😅
    Can’t wait for your next video . Cheers

    Thomas, well done. I’m new to your vlog and have been watching the episodes for the last several weeks and I have to compliment you - you have a talent. You have also shown me new ways on how to improve my photography and to think a bit more before capturing an image.
    The series on Patagonia was amazing. I had no idea of the beauty contained in that part of the world. I even started watching the episodes of playlist, even though I had seen many of them before. However, may I suggest you trash the “Master Photographer” episode. Honestly, it put me right off my lunch and my appreciation for your work, and by the way, there’s an “a” in “eductor”. In this episode you show yourself as a bully, a tyrant and a prima donna. Where is that boyish charm of other episodes? Where is that calm, contemplative artist that appreciates the beauty of nature and paints with his camera? I could not and did not finish watching it.
    Best of luck to you lady.

    Thomas. Thank you for this video.
    Things that I want to add:
    1st finish of the paper is a setting in the printer menu.
    2nd biggest flaw in my opinion is that paper tray that allows dust to sit on top of the paper so every time you want to print - remove dust from first sheet of paper before you print. Dust and other particles left on paper will leave white spots.
    3. This printer can print QX paper (square paper), but it needs a different paper tray for specific paper size.

    • @TDtog2112
      @TDtog2112 10 วันที่ผ่านมา

      How about just putting a cloth over the tray to keep the dust off?

    • @garyolson2676
      @garyolson2676 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I love this little printer. The dust issue has not been a problem, and I leave it out where my cats can walk all over it. The paper tray has a cover that snaps down to protect the paper in between sessions, but even left open the paper tray is in the printer. Ok, I got a bit of dust in the printer and had to run a couple of images through to clean it. Printing costs on my Canon printer are quite costly, so I only print images I want to frame, which is not often. The print heads in the big Canon dry out fairly quickly. In the Selphy, each printing cartridge is good for 108 prints and the paper is included with the cartridge. Also, the prints can be handled immediately since it is dye sublimation. The printer lays down a clear coat during the final pass through the little printer. I have some beautiful photo storage albums which allows me to show my work to others. The Selphy has saved me a lot of money.

    Honestly, that Selphy printer may be nice for cheap, easy prints, but this is really a limiting solution when it comes to cheap photo printing. I wouls rather suggest the Canon G620. It may cost a little more, but still is a cheap option, especially on the long run, that megatank printer would be a much better option, and it can print 8.5x11 inches photos. For a little more money, the Epson ET8550, also an ink tank printer, will print up to 13 inches ... In my opinion, these currently are the best "cheap" printers one can get for good quality prints along with very low operating cost

    Up until a couple of months ago I wouldn't have bothered with landscape photography, I love birds, dragonflies, butterflies and all sorts of insects and animals. That was two months ago, I'm a convert and have added landscape photography to my list of subjects that I can photograph too. Two weeks ago I got myself up early and enjoyed the hoar frost and misty waters of my local wildlife reserve and had your suggestions in my head. I had a thoroughly enjoyable experience. Then I watch this video and think yep, he's right, enjoy the great outdoors and guess what you CAN print it too 😁 Thanks for the inspiration...

      That’s interesting to hear. I am just starting out, but was looking at getting some photos printed. And the canon paper costs around 0.36$ a picture, and I can get them printed for 0.07$ but with 7$ shipping. And I have to pay for the printer. Just wondering if it is really worth the ekstra kost.

      @@flippnorge7105 It was for me. The printing quality at Shutterfly, Mpix, Snapfish, Walgreens and CVS always printed too dark and any shadow were always muddy. It was so discouraging. I’d spend hours in Lightroom only to get back 100+ unusable photos. 95% of the time my SELPHY photos print perfect on the first try. The remaining 5% of the time it’s because I noticed a blown out highlight I missed or a random object that needed to be removed.

    As someone who's always had a home printer and I'm currently using my old Canon Pixma I got for free when I went to uni, I'm always surprised to learn that some people don't have their own printer. I'm also surprised that people (like my mum, for instance) get scammed into buying a new wifi printer along with their new laptop that they also got upsold antivirus on. Please don't buy a wifi printer - they're more expensive and you'll have to replace them in a few years when the manufacturer stops supporting them or risk someone exploiting your printer to access devices on your network

    I guess, part of the color issues are because the sublimation film it prints from isnt RGB, but CMYK colors (one film = one color, therefore multiple passes during printing). And, when it comes to get CMYK look like RGB on your monitor (and cameras Bayer matrice), it allways gets challenging.

    Couldn't agree more. When I took up photography I did a few batches of sending files away and getting the small prints back to see which would print well larger, and brightness, etc. I stopped getting around to that pretty quickly and years went by without printing anything. Got one of these, and suddenly I can just press a button and have a real little print to inspect, share, album with no need to plan. As others mentioned, the dye sublimation tech means you can forget it for 6 months and not get gunky print heads when you go to use it again. And there's a clear coat as the last layer so it seems more like a photo color print than an inkjet that feels like an inkjet print...

    The major advantage to me is it can be left for months at a time and be used without any issues.

Those photos are lower res and not as well composed as my wildlife shots, but I love them nonetheless, because they allow me to remember my trip and the environment I was in. Currently, they're languishing on my phone and occasionally flick past as my laptop screensaver. This printer is EXACTLY what I want to give life to these images. My daughter purchased one for a gift to me a while ago and I think it’s a great little addition, it takes up no room whatsoever on my desk and produces quite good prints at a very reasonable cost per print. Yes they are only postcard size but what’s the point in taking images if you are not going to print them 🤔 the odd one might get framed but the whole idea is to take pride in what you have done and have a hard physical example of your work regardless of size, instead of just an image on an SD card. I love it’s simplicity 😉👍 well done Canon and that’s coming from a Nikon guy

    Hi Thomas, your first video about the canon pro 1000 made me buy a printer. In the end it was a waste of my hard earned student money. Thinking it would bring my photography to the next level. it didn't recently i parted with the Canon Pro 100s i bought by giving it away.
    Printing is not for everyone, decide if you like the art of printing or just like your work printed, because in the end going to a printshop might just be cheaper for you. And i think these video''s are a good inspiration but also a lot of hype. It was my own choice, i don't regret it. But this point is not highligthed enough.

    Nice one. I do run Selphy printers since more than 10 years. Rarely disappointed me, more often made the difference of getting the job done or not. Had a project on the local school - kids could go for some makeup or hair styling, and we offered a portrait shot with 5 possible quick settings, grab your personal print - done. Should have seen the kids eyes, just fantastic.There are or is an ICC profile available (at least for the 1300 model) - colors look fine for me. And it is not ink but some wax (don't slaughter me for the wrong term), the point is, you can instantly grab the print and are good to go. One complaint I have is, that given the fact that the was no major update in terms of improving the quality of the prints, you could use old models on the latest computers/OS (speaking for the Apple ecosystem). The only thing you had to do, was to change some code in the installation program for the printer to accept the latest MacOS.. But Canon closed that door, so as you cannot use older printers on the latest MacOS, you are being forced to buy a newer model, or the latest one.

    I recently got into Fujis Instax series and I love those way more. The prints, while not super colour accurate, are still very good and have a bit of that film charm. Plus the fact that they take a minute to develop is like magic to people. It also prints way faster and the printers themselves are way more portable to a point where I'm actually carrying one when I'm about. Sure, 1/2 size prints for 4x the price per is a big trade off, but I suggest that everyone at least tries one anyway

    I bought one a few months ago, its good for a toy, but the reason for poor quality is because it only prints in cyan,magenta and yellow (no black ink) so the print is a bit blurred with not much detail. As for gloss or matt, go into the menu and choose your finish, it's not the paper, I'm guessing it's like a clear coating 👍

    I can see how gear price can make you fell like the content is somewhat unrelatable at times, but so does skill level (I can't do what you do, I don't have the artistic eye nor the knowledge you have). However not all artists are the same just like the reason I follow them is not the same. I follow some youtubers for the gear the use, cause it is the same as mine (or similar) and I get some lessons out of their videos, be it film processing, scanning. . .whatever. In your case I follow cause I like your story telling, your photos, your adventures in the UK (where I live, so I guess there's some relatability there?) and it's always interesting to see the thought process of a professional of a field where I'm simply an enthusiast. Now if you turned your channel into printer reviews full time, well that might be a tough watch 😅 but peppering your outdoor/in the field content with these kind of videos is very entertaining at least for me. It shows it is your job, and that your job is not all adventures but also admin, financial decisions, hours at the desk. . . so I guess, again, there is some relatability there too. Having said ALL that, 2.5K for a printer??? are you nuts?? 🤣😋
