      Again with the cayenne both in and on this one. My food wish is a recipe not ruined with cayenne and or red pepper flakes. Why spend the money for lump crab meat if you just over power that awesome flavor with cayenne?

    just made this for thanksgiving and it turned out great! IMO a little too much cream cheese though, i will try a brick and a half next time. I also added fresh parsley instead of tarragon and also added shaved parm cheese to the cheddar. I made two of these with one sourdough bread, i just used the cap as another bead bowl. I still have a little filling left, i will try it with some type of pasta later. If it helps anyone I used canned lump crab meat,, two cans, drained then rinsed. Again this is the bomb and everyone loved it. Thank you Chef John

    I made this last week and it was the best dip I have eaten. The only difference I made was to add Old Bay, and add the crab last to leave it somewhat intact. This was my first Chef John recipe and I have since subscribed. So many great ideas! I am trying the Flaxseed Crackers next.

    This is in the oven for NYE celebrations tonight! Thanks for a great recipe. Everyone that tried this dip last time loved it. I did add in Old Bay, and added crab last to keep it in lumps. This was our first Chef John recipe that we tried and since we have made about 10 meals from his recipes.

      @SuzanneBaruch 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      ... and to complete the "Chesapeake Bay Way" theme, substitute low sodium Old Bay ( *NOT* Young Bay) for the spices. Just make sure you sprinkle the top with a little cayenne, so Chef John doesn't send ninjas to your house. I already made that mistake once, and I'm not going there again.

    Chef John, you are just so wonderful I honestly don't know what to say. You do all these videos for basically free (as in none of us are being charged a dime) and they're all such great quality lessons. On top of that, the attitude is so relaxed that I can just absorb everything you say like you're some kind of wizard. I'm just rambling at this point, but I wanted to make sure you knew that we love you.

    Made this tonight (3 days after the Superbowl) sans bread, sub'd tuna for crab. The tarragon sells it, no one can tell the difference. Thanks for the reminder to let it cool when it comes out of the oven. We appreciate you. I will make this dip early and often. ☺

    This is seriously my favorite recipe of yours, hands-down. It's kind of involved with the list of ingredients and the chopping but the result is soooooo worth it! It looks fantastic. And before the guests arrive, you can take the extra dip and spread it out on the bread you cut off the top. A few minutes under the broiler and LUNCH IS SERVED. lol

    Looks delicious! I have made something very similar to this before and can offer a few tips:
    In my area (Mid Atlantic) lump crab meat sells for about $35-36/pound. Being that all the mixing breaks the lumps, it would be much more economical to buy the less priced back fin (about $25/pound) or the claw meat which is about $16/pound.You still get the delicious crab flavor but at 1/2 the cost. As for the bread, we will generally remove the middle of the bread, as well as the "lid", cut it into pieces and lightly toast it, to serve with the dip.
    Also, in this area we have a seafood seasoning known as Old Bay. It's pretty much a given that it be used in anything with crab!

    The lady and I made this with some (GASP!) imitation crab meat and it was superb. We also through in some spinach for good measure. We were both dipping all over the place, and just so darn happy about it. Thanks a ton, and I've glad you've kept up the good work. Also, I'm glad you've relaxed up a bit since your early videos where you seemed so nervous!

    Yum! I will love this one! Now Chef John.. Take this wonderful dip and slowly stir in 2 cups or more of clam juice or chicken broth to make a nice bisque type soup, you might need some heavy cream also- not sure. OR!!! Take some homemade French Onion Soup made and place it in a oven safe bowl and top it with toast on which this dip is spread THEN bake it nice and bubbly brown! Think outside the box or bowl that is!

    Chef john, great choice on the white cheddar cheese, especially if you can get a really good Vermont white cheddar, but if you want the 10 million that comes with the football free agent signing, lol, go with a really good swiss gruyere cheese. You and i both know that is the best cheese in the world, every other cheese is a distant second place when it comes to foods like this.
