As a mother who has been deeply involved in my community's schools for almost two decades and has her own fake children (who I sometimes like more than my "real" son), I absolutely LOVE this story! I'm so glad he realizes the difference he makes. My favorite affirmation story happened a few years ago when a then freshman and I were talking in a social situation. Another person made a comment which prompted Matthew to look at me and tell me, "Ms Debbie, I will never forget you. You made first grade library so much fun and most of all, you smiled at me every day and when you asked me, "how ya doin' little dude?', I knew you cared and really listened to my answer." My heart swelled nearly out of my chest. That was the "rule" I made for myself, to really listen to these little people and hopefully, they would know that they could always come to Ms Debbie.

I wish we had more teachers like you. We trust our children with teachers 8-9 hours a day..if only they all had a heart like yours. May you be blessed with a “quiver full” of children.❤️

I was always told that I'm too kind and too empathetic. My heart is open to everyone and I think compassion is essential. I'm studying to become a high school teacher. I love teenagers, because they're at a stage in their lives when you can start to see what kind of adults they will become, and it's not easy to figure out who you are and who you want to be. I want my classroom to be a safe place for them to grow and express themselves freely. I want to give them the final push in the right direction before they enter adulthood, because sometimes they don't have that at home. My compassion is my strength, and I hope I can give a bit of that strength to those who need it, because everybody deserves a chance.

You're awesome. I am a former teacher myself. I wouldn't consider myself a "fake father". I did just as much as the man whom planted the seed. Teachers are indeed heroes. The job might not pay a lot but the contributions and the effects you give these individuals is worth it.

Honestly, as a gay man, I found being a Big Brother very rewarding. My Little Brother was super stoked that he was the only kid he knew with TWO Big Brothers.
They grow up too fast. They disappoint themselves and fall into behaviors that they told you were "stupid" but I know in my heart he was changed for the better from having me in his life.
And I know for a fact having him in my life changed me for the better.
I learned a lot from him. Having him in my life taught me patience, and limits, and how to be a better man - for the love of that Little Brother.
    Thanks Brian!

The school system does not work for most kids. It is one kind of learning, one kind of test, one kind of intelligence. Unschool your kids, teach to their kind of intelligence, dont let them lose their spark.
