DIY Kitchen Finale-My thoughts on Magnolia Home Cabinet Paint by Kilz. Success or fail???

Thank you so much for being patient while waiting for the final installment of my kitchen DIY. I meant to have this done by the first of the year but I got lazy to be honest!
If you remember, around November I did a Kitchen DIY painting the cabinets with Magnolia Home Cabinet Paint by Kilz.

I left off being very underwhelmed with the product but wanted to give it a chance so I waited the full 30 days to allow it to cure and had a lot of the same feelings. Chipping, scuffing, etc. I was in panic mode! I didn't want to have to strip and redo what I had spent so much time and energy on! I tried a specific clear coat to see if I could get the protection and durability I desperately needed.

Gator Hyde by Dixie Belle! I have used this on a few pieces of furniture with great success. Easy application, tough finish that is holding up to task of everyday use. Cleans like a dream. Please note- This ONLY comes in a semi gloss/glossy finish so may not be your desired finish! I lucked out because the finish of my paint was already semi gloss for ease of clean up in the kitchen. I swiped on a couple of coats with my damp sponge and the finish came out awesome. I can already tell after a couple of weeks that this is going to save what was deemed a failed mission months ago! Super impressed. *I'd like to note that Dixie Belle only guarantees this finish on their branded paint. I looked online to see if anyone tried it on other surfaces and found nothing.
Trials and tribulations aside, I am loving the final results! The warmth this adds to my home is awesome. That aside the remaining question is: Would I use this cabinet paint again? Sadly, the answer is no. I wanted to love it but this product failed in so many ways. This video is not so much about the process but the finish.

Thanks for sharing this! I was on the fence about trying it but I loved the colors Magnolia offers. I’m going to try getting their color in Valspar cabinet enamel paint. 🤞

Thank you so much for the update! I've already bought the paint, so I'm going to go ahead and paint these cabinets of mine. I'm painting just my upper cabinets, the bottom ones I chose to chalk paint. I'm not sure why on earth I didn't get chalk paint for the uppers. It's so much easier and quicker to work with! I think I'll get the Gator Hide to go along with it! I'll update you and let you know how it goes. I hope this Ohio weather will warm up soon so I can sand the doors outside and finish my kitchen! By the way, the paint color I chose is called Wedding Band. :)
Good luck with your painting. I scoured the internet for negative reviews and found very few. Maybe mine was just a bad batch? I’d love to see a pic of your finished product when your done!

Thank you so much for your honest impressions of this product. We are getting ready to paint our kitchen cabinets and I was considering this product because of the color choice. I think I will choose a different product and see if they can match my color choice from the Magnolia line. All the best...
If I were to do it over again I would prob use an oil based product for cabinets. It’s stinky but has a great finished product. Thank you so much for watching!
This video was so helpful!. I have the same style cabinets. I wasnt sure if they would look good painted because they are stained a dark color. Seeing them painted gives me the confidence they will look as awesome as yours or your former kirchen I guess. Green is my favorite color, I guess I need to figure out the brand to use now.
Thanks for watching. This is the second time I’ve painted kitchen cabinets. The other product I used was a Valspar oil based product and that hand a stronger finish. It was stinky during application but was worth it in the end.

I used this product in a different color and it was horrible. I had to redo, sand and repaint most of my pieces. It made my painting job twice as long and painful for me and the client. I will never use Magnolia homes. What finally saved me was thinning the paint out with water…it was so hard to get a smooth finish. The rollers didn’t work. Had to use a chalk brush. Many others have given a negative review on this product from Lowe’s where I got it…never again. Their are so many other better options
I am so glad it wasn’t just me!!!! I had to do so much sanding to smooth that finish out. It still sucked😂. The clear coat I put on it will hopefully give it the longevity I need. Dixie Belle is usually my go to paint for furniture and I love their options. I’d prob use that if I had to do it over.

It may have to do with the material of your cabinets, who knows! 🤷♀️
It may, I sanded one of them down pretty far and got to raw wood. I have heard from others that they had a similar experience. Loved the color options but disliked application:)
