  • This is the most streak proof black paint I’ve ever used!! In this detailed boho furniture flip I use valspar cabinet and furniture oil enriched enamel that is a soap and water clean up paint! I scratch tested a can of oops paint at lowes and discovered this ultra rock hard paint for $2.50! I then ran back to lowes to buy it in black for $25.99 and I found the most streak free black I’ve ever used! Follow along as I share my method for a brush stroke free finish that will stand the test of time.
    Products used
    Dawn Dish soap and water to clean piece
    325 grit sanding paper and sponge
    Tack cloth
    Roll of faux cane Amazon
    Valspar cabinet and furniture enamel in Satin finish- make sure you get Satin finish as I read that semi gloss can be feel sticky even when dry plus Satin is a very durable but still has a slight sheen -Color was caviar. I buy this paint at lowes)

      What color did you paint your kitchen cabinets, do you get a lot of sunshine in there? We kind fo do, but because the sunroom is at the back of the kitchen the windows don’t get a lot of brightness there. No windows by the garage door either.

    Use a sharp razor blade to cut the round end off your foam roller so you have a squared-off edge for painting against trim or into crevices.

    I've used this paint and like it. However, there is a learning curve, especially if you're used to painting with chalk paint. I messed it up a couple of times because I had to restrain myself from over-working the paint once it has started to dry. I ultimately had success with a foam roller, thin coats, and using a finishing pad between coats... and then walk away, don't touch it, don't look back. Wait at least 9h between coats.

      I used this on some chairs, it did chip and scratch, what did I do wrong? I roughed your surface and did use valspar stain blocker as recommended from Lowes. Do you think it needs to cure longer? I painted inside in the winter.

    • @lauratruthseekingWarrior
      @lauratruthseekingWarrior 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@susanschain4354 let it cure longer between coats. I found this out using it on my bathroom cabinets. It was a pretty easy job. Hubby said don’t paint the inside of the doors I said, ugh, yucky! I’m not leaving those cabinet doors with ant orange oak stain from 22 years ago. So last year when I painted them, I needed 2 coats and no primer. They have held up great, no chipping or anything. I only lightly sanded once between the first and second finish. I didn’t want smooth glass looking cabinets like I love in kitchen cabinets. I wanted more rustic cabinets in the bathrooms. I waited a whole day before I sanded. I also used clear wax from Home Depot, behr I think it was and it helped with the finish.

    So many things from car-refinishing transfer across to furniture refinishing - E.G for filling them little dings & nicks, air-dry single pack putty is perfect - it fills small holes, bonds tight & sands smooth - comes in handy little tubes too. Prepping for paint is much the same for any substrate, so car-refinishing products can be super-handy when repurposed for furniture refinishing.

    I used this to paint a nightstand. I cleaned, sanded and primed. I tried a 1/4" nap velour roller, foam roller and brush and got texture with all of them. The only one that I found worked for me was BM Advance. I think because it has such a long time between re-coats that it has a longer time to level out.
    Edit: I guess maybe I'm being picky. When you did the closeups at the 31:30 mark, that's how much texture I have. I was expecting something near a sprayed on finish.

    I think 2 reasons that it seemed/was so thin are 1- its Valspar
    2- any paint in dark or saturated colors takes a deep base to put the color into thats why when you paint on wall with these colors you should have a tinted primer or have them tint the primer for you .
    The deep base colors are so saturated with pigment and the base is like a thin gel (almost clear).
    I only know this because of working in paint department in a very popular store

    Help, the cabinet builder 2.5 years ago did an awful job on the doors and some of the cabinets in our kitchen painting them, I hate the color too, it’s not what I chose, not what I picked, hubby said it would grow on me, I hate it still, it’s chipping too now! My walls I want to paint a creamy white, I don’t have much in wall surface in the kitchen. I want to shiplap the walls in the kitchen, my floors are grey with tan and brown tinges running through with different shades of grey and some white in the floor tiles too. The flooring is plank ceramic tiles. My husband is rough on furniture, doors, windows and kitchen and bathroom and built in cabinets, we both have adhd, but I am more gentle than he is with stuff. I’m thinking of painting my cabinets in the kitchen lowers charcoal grey and the uppers a tan grey, kinda medium, not light. I don’t like white and black mix cabinets in a kitchen. My kitchen is not large but it’s not small. We have 2 dogs that always seem to be dirty, hubby washes them only once in a while and I cannot wash the boy dog who has super long thick hair compares to our girl. The kitchen is a decent size, our house is a total of 2415 sq ft, with the sunroom being the largest, then the kitchen, then the bonus room, then the family room, the. The master bedroom. So I just can’t decide on what color to sue and I usually paint with Sherwin Williams, I like ovation paint too! I love the valspar cabinet and door trim paint also! I’m getting more! Can you use this paint on top of water based enamel? Oh and our countertops are mixed granite, and white a little grey, which is why I’m leaning towards grey tan paint color.

My MIL had a Mennonite history but I don’t know anything about the piece. I suspect it’s hand made and want to respect the piece but I’m not in love with it as is.

    finally someone showing the texture...today i just repainted a 76 old furniture and i was wondering how in the world do this DIY get such a perfect surface... but it seems they get the same surface/orange peel look as i did... from afar looks neet, but from close to it... meh i sort of disliked it... i wonder if wasnt easier to just use some plastic coating and place it over... after all that wood bondage and grinding i did...

    Question ❓ In some piece do you fill in wood filler? Than sand down than paint? Would it be better for smoothess?

    This paint is ok. I used it for a bookcase and it was extremely thick in my case. It didn’t brush or roll well. Spraying was ok out of an airless sprayer. It doesn’t do as well as Benjamin Moore Advance

      Hey! Annie Sloan and all chalk paint in general is going to have a thicker brush stroke look when using a brush or more stippling when using a roller. Sometimes texture is what you want and really adds to the look but sometimes you want smooth so I enjoy using lots of kinds of paint for different looks ❤️ the enamel paint in this video is going to self level really well and doesn’t need a topcoat which for painting dark colors can be a real life saver! I find when I use chalk paint and dark colors that I get a lot of streaks when I apply a topcoat or wax to seal it. Hope that helps! Worth mentioning is that chalk paint can be sprayed or sanded to get a smooth finish and many pros do that, but I’m a roller and brush kind of gal

      You can see the brush strokes with AS chalk paint. I don’t like the look but love the durability. To achieve a saltine smooth baby bum soft finish, I brush on AS in thin coats by watering down a bit and then use a foam roller to smooth out. I let it dry for while … not good for flippers but! Then when it’s very dry, I sand gently with a 400. Then I do another coat the same way. Let it cure and sand again. You can bring up a sheen on AS pain with just a soft rag! But it’s best to use a wax finish - on a dresser it’s fine but on a table top, DON”T do it! Not durable enough. But I have seen people using Odie’s or Osmo liquid wax, which is supposed to be ultra durable. Or you could use a poly satin.

    I just bought a piece very similar and want to paint it. I love your channel and how well you explain the process. I used this paint on chairs, sanded, primed and painted. It chipped in some places. I don’t think I let it cure long enough.
    Do you think 30 days minimum for chairs?

    Hey! tried this paint out this weekend and love it. I painted my dining room table. Should i use a top coat? Also when I start using the table and want to clean it, can I use a gentle cleaner ? or just a damp cloth ?

    • @blacksheephouse
      @blacksheephouse  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It won’t hurt to add a topcoat of some sort, try using some wipe on poly by Minwax and a black cloth to apply for a really smooth, no brush stroke topcoat. As for cleaning I usually use baby wipes on any painted furniture in my home but if you need to sanitize, Lysol wipes are fine too. The key is nothing too wet for too long of your clear coat will get cloudy so wipes are great

    Don't you get bubbles from the foam roller? Every time I tried a foam roller on furniture I had bubbles no matter how lightly I rolled over the surface, but I didn't use a brush first, I just rolled it on.

    • @blacksheephouse
      @blacksheephouse  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The key for me is that I’m using the roller to remove paint and smooth it after I did the applying paint part with the brush. And when my roller gets full of paint I start to get bubbles again so I switch to a fresh dry roller if need be, hope that helps

      The lamp black has slightly more ash to it than the caviar. I really like them both! They are really similar, I think only a designer would notice the difference

    Little confused. Since the paint on this item came off so readily when sanded - wouldn't it require removing it entirely before putting on new paint? I have not gotten into anything other than painting my walls until now, so I have lots of questions. I am going to do my HUGE kitchen so I am researching what everyone is using. But my bathroom I painted once so I thought I was going to have to use that gel in order to take it off before putting on a new coat. Just need lots of directions.
