My attempt on how to change broken lug nuts on my Subaru Brz. I am not a professional, actually an opposite of that. Just a guy who found interest in doing DIY projects. Enjoy
Steps / Checklist:
Jack the car up
Remove Wheels (19mm socket)
Remove Brake Bolt on Back ( 17mm socket)
Place brakes on the control arm (Do not bend the brake line)
Hammer Time, the broken stud (Careful not to miss)
Take broken stud and throw it away (Pain in the ass)
Put in new stud
Use washer and nut method to pull out the stud
Use the force, the force should be with you
Put brakes back
-Put wheels back
-Try not to break the studs again
-Put the car down
Finally Drift (Don't Crash)
Broke my studs today and I stg this was the most helpful video I ever seen saved my ass with that washer trick
Brz been sitting for a year neglecting it but I have to change 3 studs before I take her for a drive again, thanks for the tips man. Too EZ
I didnt know it was this easy, thank you!
Thank you!! I got to replace one on each my front and rear passenger side! Super easy and straight forward from the looks of it
The size of an open nut that fits is M12-1.25
That is helpful info!
Thanks good info, thank you!
Wish this worked on the back studs. Doesn’t have that open space in the wheel hub in the back. Worked great on the front tho!
This being my first ever video, and first time working in the car, did not realized that, haha! That and also have not have the back bolts break on me yet.
I’m sure you figured it out by now but incase anyone else sees this it’s easier to do the back if you take the rotor off too
thanks dude super helpful
No problem,glad it helped!
thanks!! i just broke mine.... easy peasy :)
man these studs are so weak, i broke 3 on one wheel and one on the other and they snapped, i’m worried more are gonna snap now all of a sudden they’re snapping like nothing i was trying to swap my stocks to aftermarket wheels
Yeah pretty standard on these cars haha. When ever you do take them off put anti-sieze on it and use a torque wrench at 89 ftlb. Also don't use an impact as it can damage it more. There is a nice upgrade if you want to change the studs, I recommend the arp wheel stud which are much stronger than the stock ones.
Yooo I j saw your latest vid 2+ yrs ago y u have to get rid of it? This helped me a bit someone didn’t thread 2 of the lug nuts on my brz just tried to take the right wheel off and had to snap the studs off with the nuts still stuck on they were so cross threaded in there basically fused 😅
Did the car drive fine after? I'm just asking because I wasnt sure if ur supposed to take off the rotor too
2 years later and a couple more broken studs......and still driving perfectly fine 👍.
The most important thing is to make sure the stud is in all the way. Yes, its recommended to take off the hub and usuallt have it pressed with a hydraulic machine.. But for people like me who don't have time or budget I believe this is enough.
I would recommend not smashing it with a hammer. The wheel bearing and assembly is not designed to withstand impacts from the side.
instead, taking a large C-Clamp with a deep-well socket on the back - then using an impact gun to vice the stud out.
If you do this only once or twice it's fine, but if this is on a car where the studs break frequently you might want to choose a different method of removal.
What is the size of the stud?
It is M12-1.25!
What size allen wrench did you use to lock the hub from spinning?
It doesn't have to be a specific size, something that would slide down there and lock the wheels would work. The bigger the allen wrench, the less chance it'll snap on you and end up hitting something, lol.

Why is this such a Comon issue??!!?!
