    You just saved me. I’ve been in excruciating pain since my baby was born. You are the first person to really explain how to latch. No one ever said to slide the baby down, everyone always says line nipple to nose. Thank you, I’m nursing in tears right now because it doesn’t hurt for the first time ever

I couldn’t figure out why it’s been so painful lately. This comment is long overdue. This video saved me and my baby. This video, especially tips #2 and #3 is what helped me get a latch at all. Tip #3 is just a lifesaver. I spent two weeks working with multiple lactation consultants and none of them mentioned it! Now my baby is 5 months old and his ped called him "juicy" because he is gaining weight very well. Thank you!!
    I've shared this video with every struggling mom I know and it's helped them too. It's been reshared in our mom group multiple times. God bless you. I can't thank you enough.

    Hands down the most helpful video I’ve found. I’ve breastfed 3 babies and I just had my 4th. I never understood why people said breastfeeding shouldn’t hurt because it always has for at least the first 3 weeks for me. I always thought I had a good latch but I think I eventually did..not from the beginning. I refused to deal with pain again, and my fourth baby has been struggling with a shallow latch on one breast only, which has been painful and frustrating. This video has saved my sanity!

    Thank you for this video. My baby is 7 days old and having a hard time latching. I will be having him checked for a tongue tie but this video really helped me to see how I have been doing it wrong. Thank you. I’m desperate to make breastfeeding work for my baby and I. It’s so stressful and hard to navigate when it’s not working out well. I have cried so much as I fear not being able to breastfeed him. His inability to latch and relying on pumping plus stress seems to now be affecting my supply too. I will use the advice you have given and am confident this advice was needed for me to better help him latch.

      So after some more time.... I did get a better latch following your advice, but I can't get him to do it regularly. And when I do get him to latch deeper, I can't get him to stay latched deep. He is 2 months and his latch isn't painful but he isn't efficient and his latch doesn't look like what you see in pictures

      That’s great that you managed to get a deeper latch. If baby isn’t able to maintain it, it’s likely to be due to muscular tension making it uncomfortable for baby to keep their mouth open wide. Check out my video on this :)

      This is super common. Newborn babies are like little springs and it’s a gradual process for them to uncoil (and bring hands/legs away from their midline) over the first few months.
      Bring babies hands around your br3ast (like bub is giving you a hug). Sometimes you’ll have to fight against their resistance but they’ll then sit with one hand around breast and the other resting on top (ish!)

      @alissabrownibclc  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Does your baby open their mouth wider when they yawn or cry, but you struggle to get them to open it when they're feeding? It may be that baby has neck/jaw muscular restriction stopping them from opening a wide mouth. I'll be popping a video up about this in the next few weeks, but you might find it helpful to look up a local paediatric craniosacral osteopath who can help assess and release tension and help baby open a wider mouth.
      Also make sure baby doesn't have anything (your hand, feeding pillow etc) behind their head so they can tip their head back and come into the breast with their chin first. If they are tucked into your arms or cannot tip their head back they can't open a wide mouth :)

    • @alissabrownibclc
      @alissabrownibclc  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Clicking occurs when babies try to extend they're tongue as they're sucking and it snaps back due to restriction, this breaks the suction and causes the clicking sound. The combination of the clicking and lipstick shaped nipple likely indicates your baby does have some level of tongue restriction - whether it be just lingual frenulum or muscular restriction also. If your baby is gaining weight, not struggling with excess wind/reflux and it's comfortable for you then it's not necessarily a problem, but if you have concerns with any of those I'd encourage you to get a functional assessment from an IBCLC :)

    I’ve never commented on a video before but this is amazing! Little one is feeding better straight away!
    That said, she is quite heavy and I have large breasts so I can’t hold her for long in the cross cradle hold. When I try to let go of the breast she’s feeding on to use that arm for more support the weight of my breast pulls the nipple out of her mouth. Do you have any tips on how to navigate this?

    • @alissabrownibclc
      @alissabrownibclc  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank you so much for taking the time to comment - it's honestly so lovely to hear that this was helpful for you!
      So you might find a stargazing hold works well - position bub so she's almost sitting next to you, head near your breasts, feet towards your back. Support behind back and shoulder blades (same as in cross cradle) but place a sausage shaped pillow or a rolled towel/blanket underneath your hand to support her weight. Youll hold her with the same hand as breast you're feeding on and then you'll have the other hand to support/shape the breast. You can also try using a small hand towel or face washer rolled into a sausage shape and placing the roll under your breast to help lift it.

      There are a lot of reasons why babies get into the habit of having a shallow latch - sometimes it's due to neck/jaw tension limiting how widely they can comfortably open their mouth, in other cases it can be compensation for poor tongue function and baby struggling with a fast milk flow so they slip back to a shallow latch. Depending on the cause it is possible to correct, but the older the baby the more difficult it can be :)

    This video is really helpful and seems to help a lot of mothers. However, when I slide the baby as mentioned, he doesn’t latch on by himself, I have to help him to latch on by bringing him little upwards so that he can latch on. Is there anything that you can suggest so that he can take nipple by himself as he seems to stay only under the nipple.

    • @alissabrownibclc
      @alissabrownibclc  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi. So if your baby is struggling to open their mouth wide enough there's a few things which might be going on. 1) you might have slid them around too far, it should only be 1-2cm. 2) it may be that your baby has tension in the muscles of their neck and jaw preventing them from opening a wide mouth - take a look at this video :) th-cam.com/video/t_iYSaXwrKM/w-d-xo.htmlsi=Y_Yx4fIzcODSH4_d

      So if you’re struggling with baby’s weight supporting with your hand first thing to do is let baby sit on an angle, with their bottom/legs on your lap, so you’re just supporting head and torso. Next lean yourself back as soon as baby has latched so gravity takes some of the weight - then put a rolled towel or a pillow under your arm, so baby’s head is still free

    Genuine question…could my actual nipples be pointing too far to outwards?
    Little one was born 20th July, hospital staff gave me similar tips/techniques and said I was doing it well but the pain was and still is excruciating, exactly as you describe how they would be chewing/sucking. I tried your technique today, specifically the slide back and put in but feel if I slide back then the nipple itself is landing automatically on his hard palate so he can get his mouth latched at the bottom of the areola.
    hope that makes sense! Feeling really rubbish about myself and would love some more advice before I go to the support clinic tomorrow. Thank you

      Sorry to hear you’ve had such a challenging time so far. I’m struggling to picture exactly what you’re talking about but if it’s landing near hard palate then baby definitely isn’t taking a deep enough latch. Is baby opening their mouth wide to latch?

    If they latch correctly in the beginning and during feeding pull back?

    • @alissabrownibclc
      @alissabrownibclc  ปีที่แล้ว +5

      This is likely due to slow milk flow - the pulling back with nipple in their mouth is baby's way of trying to trigger another letdown. Try some massage or breast compressions and if it continues to happen it would be worth seeking some breastfeeding support from an IBCLC like myself.

    • @alissabrownibclc
      @alissabrownibclc  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes it absolutely can. A shallow latch means baby won’t remove milk as effectively and will often surf the letdown (swallowing well for a few minutes during letdown and then slowing/falling asleep).
