This was an absolute game changer for me. Thank you so much, I am using these tips now and I no longer have toe curling pain when my baby latches. My nipples are starting to heal. The only problem I am having is getting comfortable since I don’t start with him on a pillow now and it’s tough to keep him launched while trying to push pillows under him. Any suggestions?

I know you said reach out to a IBCLC if these tips don’t help. But as an IBCLC, what do I do when these tips still don’t help my son get a deeper latch? He’s 3 weeks, dentist said there’s no tongue tie. He chomps down on my nipples and they’re flat when I pull them from his mouth. He only open his mouth wide for a quick second. And even when I follow these instructions it still hurts. Any advice?

This should be common sense. Pumping on empty/not fully full is the best way to increase ur supply. Even if you get nothing. That signals to your brain that more milk needs to be made. I also reccomend power pumping. Pump for 20 rest for 10, pump for 10, rest for 10, pump for 10. I reccomend doing this first thing in the morning on ur first pump. Do this everyday for a full week or 5 days. You WILL see a huge difference. OR if the morning doesn’t work for u. Do it during an afternoon or night pump. However I find morning/afternoon is the best!!

We would usually recommend starting from around 37 weeks (due to the very tiny risk of triggering preterm labour with nipple stimulation) however it's always worth checking with your midwife. If you've got any other risks of preterm labour or have been put on pelvic rest then it's best to also be cautious with hand expressing. If your pregnancy is low risk and you've not been told to abstain from s** then you can dive into colostrum harvesting. Some mums do choose to start earlier than 37 weeks but that's the official recommendation :)

@@MsLessette this is such a common issues that feeding concerns are dismissed because baby is gaining weight. I’m really sorry that your concerns have been dismissed by LCs - that’s infuriating. Babies can have terrible tongue function but if mum has a super good supply and a fast letdown baby isn’t needing to work for it. Sometimes in these babies we see weight slow down or drop around 4-5 months when supply has decreased and baby is suddenly having to work harder for it and can’t. And different isn’t always worse. It’s a body-maturity process in many ways. As we age our bodies change. How can I expect to feel exactly the same downstairs when a bowling ball came through? But I do not feel bad, only different. I still do and enjoy all the things before. Health is always important, but some anatomical things just change overtime. We don’t last forever. Indeed what the body can accomplish is incredible! My mother had many children, and she is still beautiful and graceful.

@@KirstieAstillero don’t panic :) Some mums struggle to hand express before birth, or find it takes a few attempts so keep trying. It doesn’t mean your body wont make enough milk after birth :)

I don't think you should try to do it before week 37-38

@ Some mums do find it hard and don’t get much at all so definitely don’t panic. It doesn’t mean you won’t have a great milk supply post birth but certainly doesn’t hurt to keep trying :)
