It's a bit simplified. He's a scoring champion and you need to put him on a team where that's what you need. 2013 they had a great team and that's when they should have made it to the ECF, but they came up short against a Pacers team that had an answer for everything.

Most of these guys just refused to adapt to playing off of the ball. Odom though.....that's just sad. He was married to the Kardashian curse at that time. I hate to admit it, but I watched their show because I wanted to see how Lamar was living off the court. His wife was scheming to get Lamar to talk to his father. Lamar refused because his dad was a money grubbing crack head and Lamar knew it was in his best interest to keep his dad out of his life. He even went on to explain how his grand parents raised him and how his dad was an addict for Lamar's entire life. Khloe wasn't having it and went behind his back, invited Lamar's dad over to the house for dinner against his wishes. It was maybe 6 months later that Lamar is smoking crack with his dad, demanding a trade from the Lakers and his game just fell apart. It was sad to see. This man knew his weaknesses and his pitfalls in life. He did the hard thing to cut his dad out of his life and stay on the straight path, and a manipulative wife who just wanted to look good on camera ruined it for him.

A couple of these players declined not just because their game declined due to age, but because when they got more help, they were unable to adapt.
With better teammates, your minutes, touches will go down, and the ball will be in your hands less.
Being able to still be effective and efficient in those reduced roles like learning to play off the ball more is vital for team success.

In the 2015 offseason, Joakim Noah went to the Knicks in free agency, but it was technically viewed as a sign-and-trade deal.
Once he went to the Knicks, the production on both ends of the ball dropped severely.
He averaged just 5.0 PPG and 5.2 RPG in his first season with the Knicks.
Injuries began to pile up, and Noah couldn’t even last for 50 games in a season.
Noah would have been much better off in Chicago, where they knew how and where to use him on both sides of the floor.
Instead, his career withered away in one of the worst contracts ever given out in Knicks history.

I have seen a lot of people talk about many players on this list and for the ones who didn't "adapt" to their new role on the team I believe Kevin Granett said it best about players like Melo, Westbrook, Rondo, Iverson, Dwight Howard.... these are players who's mentally is stronger then the coaches and the people who simply ask them to play a different role. The coaches don't have power on teams, the players have the power if they leave the team looses money. Imagine if a coach told Iverson what past MVP isn't a starter. He would be fired as a coach but now imagine if he couldn't be fired so easy if would force Iverson to work harder to play how he use to or accept the new role.

That's usually how it is with these kinds of players, one-way scoring stars typically get highly overrated when they play with a defensive oriented cast designed to compliment their game and cover their defensive weaknesses. These kinds of players are always overrated, because people think their teammates are bums when in reality they anchor the defense and cover for their star's defensive weakness. They almost never win championships, 2011 Dirk is the sole exception, and even then, people really underrate that squad, Tyson Chandler was invaluable and did what Dirk could not as a big man.

The beginning of the end for Odom was when he was forced to do Khloe and Lamar even though the production of the show would disrupt his daily routine and even said he wanted no part of the series. Odom might have lasted a bit longer in the league had he not been having to balance playing with being on a reality show.
I still remember the Iverson trade and knew immediately he would disrupt the Pistons' culture. Iverson was always a me-first guy and the 2000's Pistons were built around a series of players working together to win. In addition, the Pistons gave Chauncey Billups, perhaps the heart and soul of that team. That trade was the end of those good Pistons teams.
Lastly, I'd add Steve Francis to the list. On the Rockets, he was a three-time All-Star Game starter and considered the face of the franchise, even getting the nickname Stevie Franchise. Then he got traded to Orlando and was never the same player, flaming out of the league before he was 30. Meanwhile, the Rockets got better with Tracy McGrady and everyone forgot about Steve Francis.

He was the third option behind Westbrook and George and when they had him, the thunder tried to play to his strengths but the iso ball, the constant wanting to be a more off ball player, and not to mention he declined majorly after that led to his downfall. Denver did AI Dirty. Carmelo Anthony got did dirty by the OKC Thunder. They didn't put him in the best position to thrive for the team all the while asking him to make huge changes to his game

Melo had absolutely outworn his welcome in NY. He had to go. He was tarnished. The outcome in OKC didn't surprise too many people.

Melo was one dimensional. He could score. That’s it. He didn’t or couldn’t do anything else. Yet because he score, he got a max contract, in which you add in the trade package New York got in return, and New York really could bring in anyone else. They tried Stoudemire but he was already past his prime and having serious injury concerns. Melo handicapped every team he went for. Give him credit for reviving his career in Portland, but his downfall started in OKC. He was never what he was before that

Feel bad for those who saw their career turn for the worst after getting traded except for Russ.

  • @RuinAngel
    @RuinAngel 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

Melo's downfall begins on his arrival in NYK. He got a bigger role than he deserved and he never delivered. But somehow he convinced himself that he earned it and deserved the #1 option role on any team. In reality, both of his only 2 playoff success come from a great point guard running the show.

I do not think that trades finished players careers or something like that. They already was on last leg before and these trades where more like to see if they can get some juice out of it or not and they did not get.

Melo may be one of the best college players to go pro. Meaning he was a GREAT college level player and a mid pro level player. No MVPs, no finals appearances, no all star MVPs, NOTHING! Iverson was just mishandled by the 76ers. They were suppose to go all out in bringing talent to Philly the season after they lost to LA. Imagine if iverson played today. Teams would give him all the talent in the world. But I never expected greatness from melo after he lost to Kobe in Denver. He was done after that series.

    1. I disagree, Anthony career started to decline while being final years in NYK, injury just speed up the decline
    2. Westbrook relying just on athleticism was his weak point
    5. Hibert became victim of small ball.
So in these cases this nothing to do with trades only with player mindset and skillset
