Thank you Tim for demonstrating respect and a willingness to host a Christian on your show. Thank you Marissa for your honesty and putting any vulnerability concerns aside by appearing on an atheist platform. Your union here gives me hope in humanity because what we usually see is fear on both sides to even listen to each other. And that in itself is evidence of the damage done in a society dominated by the authoritarian form of Christianity.

Tim, as a former Pentecostal evangelical - now an agnostic atheist - I am glad this was not a debate. It is oddly healing to hear this articulated from a Christian perspective. In Alabama we do not have churches where people think like this. I was raised on Dobson’s and Gothard’s teachings through the 80’s and 90’s (church school home everywhere - it completely destroyed my mental health) and this is something I needed to hear.

I think the best piece of parenting advice given me was by my son’s Steiner kindergarten teacher. She just said modelling and example are the only true forms. If you want your child to wear a bicycle helmet or wear a hat in cold weather - you wear one. Develop empathy by getting your child to feel how they would feel if something negative was done to them such as you have just done etc. My kids are grown up now and although we didn’t get it all right (and no parent does) I think we got the essentials substantially correct.

Love watching your stuff Tim, and appreciated Marissa so much. As a Canadian post-evangelical/Pentecostal deconstructing agnostic theist, a transcript of this entire conversation would be the thing I wish I could give to everyone I care about.

I have a very similar personal theology to hers. I am old enough to have the perception that this was rather mainstream-or so I thought. In my upbringing, it was not a requirement to be a "Young earth" Christian and separation of church and state was celebrated in my family. But spanking was a given and it was assumed that parents would spank. I do wish that I had better information and support as a young parent. For all my faults, I never believed that EVERY child on earth must be spanked. Some kids constantly push boundaries and other kids are super chill. During conversations about spanking if I said "Not every child needs to be spanked," people would get mad at me! Listening to this interview certainly helps unpack some things and I can't wait to have a conversation with my now adult children about this. Thank you.

Thank you for this episode. Our son is an adult now. We adopted him through foster care when he was 11. Only once I made an attempt to punish him through physical means, and the thought came to me: How can a belt or paddle prove love or even undo the abuse he had suffered ? From that time on we never used physical means on him again. We had to ensure that he was only with our families when we were present so we became his only disciplinary agents.

I think punishment/discipline should be viewed through a lens of love where the purpose is to correct or refine.

47:30 And now in the US, and everywhere that the US exports culture, the state is making all of this policy. We are in trouble folks. We have known for a long time now, in light of climate catastrophe and nuclear armament and now fascism in the US. Many have been in denial and I am hoping, as I finish the interview, that this dimension will be addressed. Thank you both for discussion of such a vital topic.
1:35 perhaps this is the point, for Christians ( and atheists justcas a story for adults only ), that people take the crucifiction very seriously as the utter death of the god of beyond in the most fully degraded torn assunder aspect of humanity demonstrated in the story of Christ's death and that his ressurection demonstrates us as vunerable humans going on together , helping one another as no one else is coming to help us and Christ us supposed to already be with us, not forsaking a single one of our fellow human beings. It's all very confusing. "Spare the rod spoil the child", what does that mean? She said spanking isn't in the bible. And you can't get to the kingdom of heaven through your works, that is why Ted Bundy is going to Heaven. And the child can only be saved through reciting the sinners prayer, so why spank the child, it won't save them? And you must hate yourself and your family members to be a disciple of God. It is craziness! How do Christians believe these things?

Christianity is the worst thing that ever could’ve happened to me.
All the strings are coming together, how do you deal with this as adult who legitimately doesn’t see the value in keeping familial connections with people who ascribe to this barbaric horrific ideology.

I was such a “figment of my indoctrination” that it took 60 years to finally escape Pentecostal prison. But when you’re born in captivity, you don’t know flee.

I was ‘spanned’ as a child and turned out just fine. It is also the reason I did not spank my kids. They turned out great! We have a great relationship and a loving one. Spanking seems a lazy and violent way to dominate. It takes too much effort for some parents to respect their own children.

As the only atheist in my family, this was very insightful and reminded me to show my mother more grace. Marissa seems to cherry pick the good parts and redefine what it means to be Christian at all, similar to my mother. I’ve been out of religion for almost 15 years and sometimes I think “how could anyone with internet access still believe?!” This video helped remind me that Christians are still individuals with varying values and beliefs.
