    I am a believer in the tweed jacket. It goes everywhere. With, jeans, slacks, turtleneck, button-down. Every man needs one. (Properly sized/tailored of course) It's a solid investment.

      @@Angel-ph4xlHmm. Never gave it much thought, but when I think of a tweed jacket, I think of a jacket with flap pockets. (They're kind of rugged outdoorsy, utilitarian by nature. Great in a drizzle) I stumbled across one in a fine blue/black houndstooth that fit well off the rack and it's been everywhere with me. Straight jeans and a flat cap and you could probably be tolerably fashion-proof from 1850 to the year 3000.

    I agree with the all the "rules" andI really liked most of the outfits, but I would add not to mix jeans and jackets in a color and shade that looks too similar; that combo looks like those made up "suits" that are not really a suit: hand-me-down wool black jacket paired with cotton faded black slacks, NO!. I'd suggest either different colors or contrasting shades of a color. Other than that, all looks are great.

    Of course, nowadays everyone can dress (and undress) as he wants... (I wonder how we can pass values to the new generations such as loyalty, honour and so, when we failed to explain them that thorn clothes are to be repaired or replaced, not to be worn...).
    The way I see it, the rules for a blazer/jeans combination fit in two words: never, ever.

    • @DaveNagrom
      @DaveNagrom 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      This combination is a more contemporary look, and traditionalists may not approve. I can understand that.
      That being said, I view the jeans and blazer look, as a way of creating a more refined casual look. There is some very good guidance provided here. There is a time and place for this. As long as you know that this is meant for casual occasions, it can really look good. Just make sure, as Antonio often says “Know the dress code, and there is always a dress code!”
      I do think that it is worthwhile to teach how to maintain and replace clothing. It teaches self-respect.
      I will not quibble with you as to what qualifies as fashion, and what is trash. While I suspect that you and I share many of the same standards and preferences, fashion is subjective.
      I do agree with you that character traits like loyalty and honour are extremely important, and largely absent in today’s society.
      I would add, that a dearth of civility, common courtesy, and basic etiquette, are particular disturbing.
      I spent the weekend at a luxury hotel with my wife. There were couples there with children aged 8-12. The children were often on their gadgets as they were eating, speaking loudly, had no idea how to use a knife and fork, licking their fingers, chewing with their mouths open, and getting up and walking around the restaurant. Then you look at their parents, and you see why.
      Mothers licking their fingers. Fathers wearing hats at the table, and exercising the same poor etiquette as their children!
      So many have failed to teach their children etiquette and courtesy. This is indicative of the general lack of civility that exists in society today. People who have no consideration for others. You hear it all of the time, parents who just want to appease their children, rather than instilling values, and cultivating character.
      That is of greater concern to me, than changes in fashion.

    • @chasatch
      @chasatch 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I wear a sports coat/blazer with jeans (SBJ for short) combination regularly, and always receive compliments. The key is, to repeat Dave Nagrom's point about "dress code", is venue. SBJ is not appropriate for formal office wear, nor for any formal occasion not specifically mentioned in a dress code, such as weddings or funerals. On the other hand, a SBJ combination works very well at a restaurant, bar, club, or other entertainment venue. In fact, you will shine like a beacon in a room full of baggy sweatpants, tee shirts, and flip-flops. I believe providing a positive example of what is possible is more productive than ranting about failure!

    Hint when washing dark jeans always use cold water and never place them in a dryer. Let them air dry on a hanger and they will stay dark for many years. Not digging the white pant outfit or the light color blazer. I prefer a darker jacket and pant.

    • @JJDoggett
      @JJDoggett 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Such a good point! I’ve been guilty of the ‘orphaned suit jacket’ and jeans combo in the past, it doesn’t look good. Blazers need to be their own thing and not just taking one half of a suit jacket, the texture and structure point is really important.
      Having said that, you can get some nice suit jackets for cheap when they’re being sold off because there’s no trousers etc., worth using them paired with smart trousers for a more relaxed Italian ‘spezzato’ style - I find this a great alternative to a full suit in the summer.

  • @ibookje
    @ibookje 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Terrible combinations!
    The jackets are all too long, making your legs shorter as well as looking like you used the jacket of a suit rather than a sports jacket.
    Also the jackets are way too roomy. But maybe that's how Americans like their jackets...
    The colors are way too ton-sur-ton. Go more contrasting on the dark blue jeans

    Very sorry, at my boarding school many boys wore jeans with their school blazer and school tie, and all my life I have used the combination. My favourite has always been blue jeans (not too dark), well-polished shoes, a shirt with French cuffs, a dark blue double-breasted blazer with black buttons, and a silk tie/bowtie. Many other combinations, of course, including a T-shirt with my jeans and blazer. Wearing ripped jeans with a blazer is not a question of too casual since ripped jeans are not an item in a well-dressed person's wardrobe.

    Jeans never look good with jeans, in my view. Ever. Always looks mismatched and forced, to say nothing of hackneyed given the inexplicable popularity of the look. There are lots of trousers out there that look a thousand times better with jackets. So make a decision: jeans or jackets. But never both.

    I am 72. I live in France. I want wear the clothes that feel comfortable. I do not care if they impress or are fashion. Fashion is in the eye of the beholder n'est pas? Why spend lots of money on clothes for trying to impress people? Who? Do I care if some stranger is going to be fashion police? This I do not understand. I wear blue jeans and long shirts with leather jacket and scarf in cold weather and shorts and t-shirt in warm weather. I live in south of France where it very hot in summer. Maybe I am dressed more like 20 years old people. Maybe when I young, okay fashion important because I need to conform at my work, but I retired, so comfortable is best.

    I really enjoy these videos of yours, Thomas! One thing I feel the urge to point out: at 3:15, you're just wearing regular Semi-Brogue Oxfords, not Balmorals 😉 On a pair of Balmoral Oxfords, the throatline continues all the way to the back of the shoe, like on a pair of Full Wing or Long Wing Brogues. In my opinion, Balmoral oxfords (especially on plain-toe oxfords) look like regular oxfords with overshoes -- I don't care for the look, personally 😂 Overall, I loved the video! Very Informative!

I've seen guys with suits wearing tennis shoes.. it looks sloppy lazy and silly. The top is going one way and the bottom is going the other way. But than again we are living in Weird modern times.. as I'm watching this, you atleast make the style look Good!

    Distressed Denim/Clothing is the WORST. Never pay money for clothes that look like someone else has already worn them out.

    Look No. 2 is a disaster. Next, never ever should you wear white jeans. Your pocket square selection is mundane. Last, always press your shirt properly.

    The only outfit that stands out as stylish is the tshirt at the end.
    All the jackets look too big and I bet if you tried on much shorter ones with highish buttons you'd be amazed at the difference. I'd even try going down half a chest size and leaving it unbuttoned for a really smooth look.
    Also look for nicer shirt collars, use an iron for the shirts, mix up the footwear with neat casuals and throw away some of those watches! ✌️

    No, I dont. Bluejeans are a fashion atrocity. Worn, torn clothing is Not fashion. A red tie does not match a blue jacket. My eyes cringe in public.

    please stop with the term sports coat. It's a blazer, most people have never even seen a sports coat in person. But a sports coat would be a lawn jacket, or a rowing jacket. It wouldn't be anything you would be paring with every day cloths

    Happy to realise that my instincts about jeans and blazer are spot on.
    And finally as my dad use to say ‘It’s ok to go unshaven if you are not wearing a tie(or conversely, when wearing a tie always shave (unless you have a formal beard… stumbles are a strictly no-no with a tie))

    And don't wear those awful cheap light brown/tan shoes with it. So many men wear cheap shoes 👞 and never get them repaired when the heel is knackered and worn down.

    Don’t wear jeans to a job interview. Wear socks and a tie. These are a must if the salary you are competing for is over 80k

    The way to wear jeans with a sports jacket is over your own dead body. The jackets that go with jeans are e.g. leather, Harrington.
