    Joy, this is probably the best video on violin scales I've seen to date. And, the way you present it is so non-condescending, and your approach to these makes it so easy to understand the simple element of Intervals and how they relate to the instrument. You are by far, the best violin tudor on TH-cam...and thank you for everything you bring us!

    🤔I have a question that may sound strange but I'm asking anyway🤗. I have rheumatoid arthritis and my Dr told name to do as much as I can to use my fine motor skills. So .I decided it was time to learn violin (fiddle). Here's my question, when I put my finger tips in the positions you showed us, I never sound right. I realized that the little lines on my currently soft finger tips don't match where it looks like the pressure from my finger tips should be. This is caused by the bones in my fingers are changing but it isn't noticeable visually, yet. I got the bright idea to start using my tuner to ring exactly what my finger tips will look like when I am actually pressing the string correctly. It may not look correct but as long as it sounds correct then I'm not concerned with looks. I hope that makes sense. I'm not familiar with tuners yet although I can tune my violin. Do I need to set it to chromatic in order to have it recognize the
    note I'm playing and how far either way I have to slide to find the place my finger is actually putting pressure, requardless how it may look. If I can just practice what my finger tips look like, then I can move forward or back to apply what is for me the correct spot for each note and it's correct. I hope this isn't to confusing.
    Thank you for everything you are teaching me. Your attitude and beautiful smile is what has kept me from using my violin for kindling! You are so positive you inspire me.

      Thank you also Amy for your kind words and bravo to you for working well with the violin learning! It is true that the tuner can be helpful with finding correct notes/pitch. However each finger needs to be placed in a relaxed way without forceful pressure, because this could injure the muscles. While you practice with the tuner, try to place the finger tip on the correct place as well as with minimum of fingertip pressure. Also give small breaks for the hand to shake off the tension. I hope you can try, Happy practising Amy!

    I’m curious as to why I’m able to use the flat positions to produce minor scales

    • @JoyLeeViolin
      @JoyLeeViolin  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You're welcome Benjamin. What do you mean by the flat position?

    • @benjaminknotts745
      @benjaminknotts745 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Joy Lee
      I start on open D and then D#, then F, and G
      But then I can continue that same pattern on the A string going
      A, A#, C, D giving me a minor key going up and down that scale
      There’s not much difference between that minor scale and the flat major scale you have. There’s only a half step difference
      I think I have those notes correct 😅
      I can add the high F and keep going, it sounds so emotional

    • @JoyLeeViolin
      @JoyLeeViolin  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Interesting! This scales you mentioned are not familiar to me, it's interesting that it skips notes. However I wish you happy music making!

    Hi, I have been playing for 1.5 years. I am currently on the 2nd book of suzuki violin. I have just learned A major, D major G major scale. I have decided to include B flat and E flat too to my scale practice. Thanks to you! But is there anything else I can follow? Is there any book or anything that suits my level of scale practicing that it will gradually teach me more scales?
    PS: I am playing without a teacher for quite a few months. Thank you.

    I am a violin teacher as well - I primarily teach using the Suzuki method, but I try to supplement other finger patterns earlier than the pieces in the books require. I am curious why you opt to teach Bb and Eb before B or E major scales since the finger patterns are the same, just a different starting position. I like that they can listen for the ringing sound of the 4th finger E or A to match their open string with B and E major, but I'm always looking for new ideas and insights!

    • @JoyLeeViolin
      @JoyLeeViolin  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Erin, thanks for your question. I find it's important for all beginner violinists to understand early on that the first fingers don't always start " on the tape/fret"as A Major and B Major scales. I have nothing against including B and E Major scales, but by including Bb and Eb major scales, the beginner violinists will be ready for the next level scales and repertoires. Thanks for your kind words and please feel free to ask any questions:)

    Learning finger placment is difficault.

    • @JoyLeeViolin
      @JoyLeeViolin  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dear James, finger placement is difficult for many of us. Muscles need time to get used to, unlike our brain. Be patient and keep going, and you will feel the easiness of the left hand. I wish you lots of fun in this journey with the violin :)

    Hi Joe
    I am with an adult with Engineering back ground. Looking for logical solutions. When you played A & D scales I check with my electronic tuner, Except open strings most of the other notes were hi/ low which indicates out of tune. Does it matter?

    • @JoyLeeViolin
      @JoyLeeViolin  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Mic, when the tuner says it's too high or low, try to adjust the finger until it says it's in tune. At first, it can be challenging, but it will help your intonation greatly especially at the beginning. Happy practicing!

    Joy, hi, there are violinists who play on the lower side of the finger board while playing scales. Could you clarify that? If its important...

    • @JoyLeeViolin
      @JoyLeeViolin  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Utav, I am not sure if i am understanding your question. Are you asking whether some would lower their left hand on the fingerboard or some would play only in the low positions such as the first position?
