You mean the Status Quo. There has never been peace. Taiwan was Formosa until the ROC retreated there to set up shop. The Status Quo would not exist without the U.S.military commitment to defend Taiwan.
With or without USA, China is determined to get Taiwan. Imagine the USA just stand still and China is allowed to have its free reign of terror in the East. Remember when the USA adopted a non interference policy towards Japan in the 1930s, it even export its oil to Imperial Japan. What did the Japanese do? They bombed Pearl Harbour, and brought the USA into the war in the Pacific. To conquer Taiwan, China will have to eliminate the treat posed by all of the US bases in South Korea and Japan to have a free reign of terror in the Far East. For sure another member of the 'axis of evil'; North Korea and Iran will join the fray and the world will be at arm once again. Leaving Taiwan and China alone to settle their business is the most stupid idea of all.

China should just give Taiwan the paperwork to there territory. Sure technically it's part of China but China has had no part in building or maintaining it for 3/4 of a century. Same thing that I was being made to see about the difference between what Europeans had to face to colonize Africa, build in infrastructures and systems, just a little while ago, and that China thinks that it's just the easiest way about it all. China needs oil supply, a cheap one, for the war on wider scale. The US Navy controlled many of the choke points for oil supply; the Straits of Hormuz the Red Sea, the Indian Ocean that lead ro the Straits of Malacca, the Straits of Singapore, also its base in the Indian Ocean could control the access to the South China Sea. In the Pacific and Far East they have bases in Japan and South Korea. If China were to be temporarily victorios it must launch a surprise attacks to neutralize the threat from these bases just like the Japanese did to Pearl Harbour. But today the US bases are numerous and global reaching. That is what China should neutralize first before it launch an invasion on the tiny Taiwan. Good luck, China

So all this being said the United States morally, militarily. and financially are caught between a rock and a hard place when it comes to the China/Taiwan conflict as well as the Ukraine/ Russia conflict. and would love to stay out of both of their domestic conflicts; but are obligated to be on the side of both Taiwan and Ukraine both newly formed democracies.

USA needs to give Taiwan offensive weapons. If not, Taiwan should develop Ballistic weapons that can hit anywhere on the mainland. This is the BEST DETERRENT TO INVASION BY THE PRC. It wasn't in America's interest to remain however if we had stayed the taliban would never have been able to take control back honestly if the United states wanted to it could have stayed as long as we wanted and been fine so if you want to think of the United States withdraw as a loss it is only due to the ignorance of Joe biden that things happened the way they did not because our military did anything wrong they were simply following orders. And don't forget the troops we had in Afghanistan were all volunteers. So we barely had any troops stationed in Afghanistan if we wanted we could sh!t all over Afghanistan. So don't say dumb sh!t.
Also one more thing the only reason the taliban exists at all is because the United States didn't just go all out on bombing the sh!t out of Afghanistan because we wanted to avoid civilian casualties but even if we had done what Russia is currently doing in ukraine which is bombing civilian areas indiscriminately not only would we have wiped the taliban off the face of the earth but there would t have been sh!t anyone could have done because the United States doesn't answer to the world Court so the fact that the taliban still exists is because of nothing more than American consideration of innocent lives.

It is very difficult to invade an island, if you are a student of history you know. But modern warfare and latest military tech it will be interesting to see. China is very close to Taiwan and it is a small island which is a major disadvantage.

Taiwan's army has a smaller area to protect, they have a large inaccessible coastline that will require a large deployment much larger than D-Day.
The fight will probably be in the mountains for years if they're able to defeat a nasty insurgency.

1) In 1894, Japan invaded China and Korea, the Qing gov was defeated and signed the [Treaty of Shimonoseki] to cede Taiwan Island to Japan.
2) During the WW2, at the Cairo Conference held in 1943, China asked the transfer of Taiwan's sovereignty back to China after the war. This content was included in the [Cairo Declaration] and later reiterated in the [Potsdam Proclamation] that it should be implemented.
3) On 14 Aug 1945, the Emperor Showa of Japan issued the [End War Edict] , Japan surrendered unconditionally and accepted the [Potsdam Proclamation]. The Supreme Commander of the Allied Forces, Marshal MacArthur ordered the Japanese troops in Taiwan to surrender to KMT General Chiang Kai Shek. Taiwan re-entered the territory of the Republic Of China (ROC).
4) Soon after that China civil war broke out between KMT and CPC, the KMT was defeated and fled to Taiwan. However, due to US intervention, the CPC without a strong navy at that time has no ability to unify Taiwan. The CPC then established the People's Republic of China (PRC) on 1949. The civil war continues...
5) In 1971, UN Resolution No. 2758 ruled that the PRC had obtained the representation rights and all legal rights originally owned by the ROC in the UN. That means the PRC is China’s only legal gov under international law, and today the PRC also become China’s only legal gov recognized by 180 countries around the world, including the USA.
"The USA recognizes the Government of the PRC as the sole legal Government of China. Within this context, the people of the USA will maintain cultural, commercial, and other unofficial relations with the people of Taiwan."

No, that is wrong. China only was freed from Japanese rule because the USA and allied powers freed it. The USA was allied to the FREE Chinese people, not the communists. The allies agreed that Taiwan should be returned to the FREE Chinese, not the poor Chinese enslaved by the communists. So the PRC has NO rights to Taiwan whatsoever.
