Being just a couple of years younger than Robert Palmer (and a good Yorkshireman as well) I thought this man was the "coolest guy on the planet" during the seventies and eighties, so cruel he had to leave us at such a young age. RIP Robert and thank you for the music you have left behind for us.
I forgot this was a Robert Palmer song. And I was in Massachusetts at *Kolburne School* when it came out and used to blast it thru the dorms then on repeat .
Sadly lost Robert Palmer.😢 Underatted like Stephen Duffy. Both have a special place in my heart.❤ They occupy high positions as ones of my favourire artists.❤ I imagine Robert Palmer singing lullabies to children...
I remember the first time I heard this song , I was about 15 , Sitting in a Stable with this charming girl who was playing the song as we fed the Horse . That was a long time ago now , But I have loved the song ever since ...
Turn this around...the conclusion should be...this fells so bad because of the songs that are. Im 36 and early this year i discoverd joy division and i never even felt more than understanding and honest appreciation for finding true love and passion and to this day i sometimes start to cry out of pure joy and happiness. And im still not able to understand the reason why all this affection all the love and joy he gave us when he wasnt able to even feel by himself.Sry bad language and spelling. Thanks for sharing guys...take care!!!
Have always loved this song! I love the feeling it gives me. I remember MTV playing this video in the very beginning of the channel in '81. Loved it then as a little kid, and love it even more as an adult! 💖💖💖
Just when I thought I possibly couldn't be transported back 42 years again, this one shows up!💓 Robert Palmer was in a Class all in his own!😎 To the days we thought would last forever!!!💕
Merry Christmas, and in fact Happy New Year. I sadly missed seeing Bob P in Paris 22 years ago. Sad for that loss, happy for the memories and recordings.
I understand what you're saying, but wonder whether it *has* to be that way. What if Johnny wasn't constantly chasing certainty or acknowledgement? What if Mary said "enough of this shit marriage"? These lyrics in just three minutes portray two deeply unhappy characters who are stuck in their unhappy groove. Such mastery of words!
I just realized that at 2:09 they ain't dancing, their moves are like an argue between a couple, and it adds so much to the aesthetic of the video. love it
Most original artists do the song the best. Although I have to say Metallica doing Bob Segars Turn The Page is better. In a way I'm biased because I love Metallica but I think that they kicked butt with their cover of it.
I'm a big Placebo fan as well, but their cover doesn't register to me as the same song, and the two versions have very different kinds of appeal to me.
19 then. 63 now, 44 years gone in a blink of a brilliant song. Merry Christmas.
And Merry Christmas to you..am listening to this through some good headphones 🎧.. Bluetooth time machine..ah nostalgia
Yup time flies. Enjoy it while you can.

Love this young man
Johnny's always running around
Trying to find certainty
He needs all the world to confirm
That he ain't lonely
Mary counts the walls
Knows he tires easily
Johnny thinks the world would be right
If it could buy truth from him
Mary says he changes his mind
More than a woman
But she made her bet
Even when the chance was slim
Running around
Running around
Johnny says he's willing to learn
When he decides he's a fool
Johnny says he'd live anywhere
When he earns the time
Mary combs her hair
Says she should be used to it
Mary always hedges her bets
She never knows what to think
She says that he still acts like he's
Being discovered
Scared that he'll be caught
Without a second thought
Running around
Running around
Running around
Running around
Johnny feels he's wasting his breath
Trying to talk sense to her
Mary says he's lacking a
Real sense of proportion
So she combs her hair
Knows he tires easily
Johnny's always running around
Trying to find certainty
He needs all the world to confirm
That he ain't lonely
Mary counts the walls
Says she should be used to it
Running around
Running around
Running around
Running around
People today wouldn’t even know the meaning of the term to “hedge a bet.”

Without a second thought
Runnin' around
Johnny feels he's wasting his breath
Tryin' to talk sense to her
Mary says, "He's lackin' a real
Sense of proportion"
So she combs her hair
Knows he tires easily
Johnny's always runnin' around
Tryin' to find certainty
He needs all the world to confirm
That he ain't lonely
Mary counts the walls
Says, "She should be used to it"
Johnny' s always runnin' around
Runnin' around
If I could I'd give you a thousand likes, thank you so much :)
Thanks for the lyrics
So freaking good.

Being just a couple of years younger than Robert Palmer (and a good Yorkshireman as well) I thought this man was the "coolest guy on the planet" during the seventies and eighties, so cruel he had to leave us at such a young age. RIP Robert and thank you for the music you have left behind for us.
Yeah!
Danke für dieses Lied. Bin immer wieder Kind wenn ich das höre.
Best Robert Palmer track by far, Powerstation also
wow I found the song i was looking for 20 years by accident.
I forgot this was a Robert Palmer song. And I was in Massachusetts at *Kolburne School* when it came out and used to blast it thru the dorms then on repeat .
Love the way the background guitar gradually builds throughout the mix...never get tired of it
Sadly lost Robert Palmer.😢 Underatted like Stephen Duffy.
Both have a special place in my heart.❤
They occupy high positions as ones of my favourire artists.❤
I imagine Robert Palmer singing lullabies to children...
My most listened to song in my life 100,000 is probably not enough 😜 ♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️
Can still clearly remember buying this when it was released back in 1980. It's amazing that this song still holds up well today.
Agree with you , timeless
R.I.P.: Robert P. / Great Musican - Great Songs: I love this SONG
Beautiful song, classy music! Thank you, RIP Mr Robert Palmer for giving us this wonderful piece.
The deep note on 1:16 that doesn’t show in the beginning, but remains for the rest of the song, makes it dramatic and nice.
Love this tune so much.
I remember the first time I heard this song , I was about 15 , Sitting in a Stable with this charming girl who was playing the song as we fed the Horse . That was a long time ago now , But I have loved the song ever since ...
The driving bass is magnificent
You'll like Fleetwood Mac's "the chain" then too I guess
If you get past 3min in on the chain there's a nice bass section that iirc was used by some sports racing car program on UK tv back in the day
I love it
My favorite Robert Palmer song. Wish he wrote more like it..rip Robert.
Ricordi d'infanzia...ho ancora il 45 giri...
Super song🎉😅
One of the worst things in my musical life is the knowledge that there will never be a new Robert Palmer record.
So fair
Man, that hurts to accept
you made me cry.
@TealCircle he died😭
Have always loved this song! I love the feeling it gives me. I remember MTV playing this video in the very beginning of the channel in '81. Loved it then as a little kid, and love it even more as an adult! 💖💖💖
Just when I thought I possibly couldn't be transported back 42 years again, this one shows up!💓
Robert Palmer was in a Class all in his own!😎
To the days we thought would last forever!!!💕
Gone 20 years ago today. Not a SINGLE day forgotten!
Beautiful and sad song 🖤
what a great song!!. Robert Palmer, a gentleman of rock!!.
Hammer Sänger u Lied
Merry Christmas, and in fact Happy New Year. I sadly missed seeing Bob P in Paris 22 years ago. Sad for that loss, happy for the memories and recordings.
So perfectly nails the sadness of the human condition. Brilliant 👏.... Robert Palmer. Those of us who know, KNOW...
True!
@@whatshername656 perfect.
I just realized that at 2:09 they ain't dancing, their moves are like an argue between a couple, and it adds so much to the aesthetic of the video. love it
Never heard this (the original) before Placebo's cover. I'm a HUGE fan of Placebo but this, this, well, this is just freakin' awesome. Better.
Now try the original 'Year of the Cat' by Al Stewart. And if you can find someone to cover Steve Winwood's 'Arc of a Diver,' you're my hero!
Never new - till now that ther is a cover of this song by Placebo. Have to find it. Thanx
Ferrys cover remains untouched, truly the best version
this song has something that no other song has
for me, this song is very emotional. just perfect and pure... this melody and voice are extraordinary!
One of the greatest songs of the 80’s, I never tire of it.
