I have seen and heard the original performer (Robert Palmer) perform this live and most recently in 1988 at the Apollo Theater in Harlem, New York. Check out the original, on 1980's "Clues," by Robert Palmer.
Few people deserve the opportunity to cover timeless classics. I could say that Bryan Ferry is one of the few that does, he like Robert Palmer has a great voice, he has the class and the musical gravitas to pull it off. Well done sir.
This cover is atmospheric and has sense of haunting, depression , reminiscing , just adds new dimension to this great song , miss one of fav Robert Palmer . All respect to Bryan Ferry
Absolutely a beautifully haunting rendition. WOW...I don't think Mr Ferry has ever made a bad cover of any song, he takes them and owns them. What vision, what talent, what pleasure it has been for me listening to him since the early 70s
I don't understand the story behind the words but this goes straight into my top 10 of all time favourites. It's so haunting, relaxing and memory provoking.

Dang, Bryan Ferry is aging well. Still a handsome, handsome man. Love the dreamy gaze of an artist immersed in creating lyrics and music. Great song and video.
One word, masterpiece. If Robert could only listen to this i bet he would be very pleased. Bryan gave it a new dimension, this version is the pinacle of this song, absolutly no doubt...fantastic, unearthly, deep and haunting.
It is a few days before Thanksgiving 2020. I sit at my desk, barely awake, tremendously sleepy, and listening to "Johnny and Mary". Reminisce I do... It was 2017, September, actually. I had celebrated my birthday that Friday at a karaoke bar. I had so much fun, but it also came with a heavy price. Upon coming home that night, my partner and I had a huge argument stemming from years worth of issues that had culminated with the dissolution of our partnership. I found myself listening to this song many times that year, but it did not become a musical "go to" til February/March 2018. That is when my partner took a job 3-4 hours north from where we presently resided. When he left, this became my consort, my therapy. I recall the days I would get off the train or bus and walk home; about a 10 minute walk. Home was a 2 bedroom apartment on the second floor that overlooked a boat dock. Months earlier, we were amazed to see a manatee and group of small sharks swimming in the dark, murky waters. First time I saw a manatee relatively up close. Anyhow, each step I took from the bus/train stop to the apartment had my heart searing with pain. Tears slid down my face in agony. I missed him so. The hazel green of his eyes, the messiness he would sometimes create at our home, his full lips, his slender form. I missed him, terribly. The apartment was lonely, I was lonely. I was heartbroken. Then, May 2018 came around and I reunited with my partner; having moved to where he was located. I was once more with my lover and partner. I have followed this man from CT all the way to the south. And perhaps, just perhaps, I shall always follow him in this lifetime. ~The Peruvian to her Green Hazel Eyed Lover~

I have always loved this song. It has been covered by many people, yet it never became a big hit. This version is pure class, too sophisticated for this world we're living in right now! Just a minor personal criticism about this edit: I miss the fading rimshots at the end, because they remind me of 1985. :)
' too sophisticated for the world we're living in now' .. pop culture has always had a treacle-top face , there is a lot of marvelous music being practiced now and the 'pop' end is but just but one genre of many..
Brian is pure genius, the coolest man in music ever. I didn't think he had anything left to offer, then I found this song, I hope there is more to come because he is way ahead of anything that is mainstream these days.
Did you know it's actually a cover version of Robert Palmer's song from 1980? Both are superb, but this is a more slowed-down and sophisticated interpretation.
First it's not his song, it's a song by Robert Palmer. Secondly Todd Terje is the genius at play here as he composed the song. Bryan Ferry just lent his voice to the song.
@@quietstorm8129 What do you mean by sour grapes? First of all I'm a huge fan of Roxy Music and Bryan Ferry. Secondly, what part of this cover version was made by Todd Terje (included in his first album 'It's Album Time') and Bryan Ferry sings in it you don't understand?
I love the irony of Bryan Ferry covering a Robert Palmer classic, but with Todd Terje’s help, he remade it into another classic. Both men had great success with their interpretations of other artist’s songs.
That is the best version of this song for me. It really give the ambiance of the story. A beautifull arrangment and the vocal of Mr Ferry makes a perfect pair. Love!!!

Johnny and Mary is an all time classic - to cover is a damned hard job. You made a fantastic new version of it, with completely different melancholic mood. Robert Palmer would have loved it!

Been a fan of Brian and Roxy Music since the days of "The Strand." Thirty-five years ago Robert conceived "Johnny and Mary" during a different Zeitgeist and Brian chose to record his rendition now as a older man with a world weary sound and a mature voice. Different tempos for different folks and times.
I know what you mean, however this cover captures the desperation so perfectly, from the woman's perspective (for an older man to see it from that point of view is a triumph alone, you don't really see Johnny in the video - although the dog symbolises him). The sadness is so evocative, the tragedy so clear, especially when she hangs her head from the car at the end. The video of the original Palmer song is partly to blame, the mime act of the original was less thoughtful and lacked pathos; it was too frantic. Very surface 80s you could say, while this video is beautiful, exquisite and timeless. But then, videos have matured too. Haunting.
I as well heard this version first and fell in love with it without knowing there was an original version but the original version by Robert Palmer was also addicted ❤

Johnny's always running around
Trying to find certainty
He needs all the world to confirm
That he ain't lonely
Mary counts the walls
Knows he tires easily
Johnny thinks the world would be right
If it could buy truth from him
Mary says he changes his mind
More than a woman
But she made her bet
Even when the chance was slim
Running around
Running around
Johnny says he's willing to learn
When he decides he's a fool
Johnny says he'd live anywhere
When he earns the time
Mary combs her hair
Says she should be used to it
Mary always hedges her bets
She never knows what to think
She says that he still acts like he's
Being discovered
Scared that he'll be caught
Without a second thought
Running around
Running around
Running around
Running around
Johnny feels he's wasting his breath
Trying to talk sense to her
Mary says he's lacking a
Real sense of proportion
So she combs her hair
Knows he tires easily
Johnny's always running around
Trying to find certainty
He needs all the world to confirm
That he ain't lonely
Mary counts the walls
Says she should be used to it
Running around
Running around

I know what you mean, however this cover captures the desperation so perfectly, from the woman's perspective (for an older man to see it from that point of view is a triumph alone, you don't really see Johnny in the video - although the dog symbolises him). The sadness is so evocative, the tragedy so clear, especially when she hangs her head from the car at the end. The video of the original Palmer song is partly to blame, the mime act of the original was less thoughtful and lacked pathos; it was too frantic. Very surface 80s you could say, while this video is beautiful, exquisite and timeless. But then, videos have matured too. Haunting.
i agree with you totally myfaith777ify
Love both Ferry & Palmer. Glad to have both versions, each playing to the strengths of the performer.
The photography here is just amazing
I've never heard the original but this mix is incredible. It goes straight for your soul.
I as well heard this version first and fell in love with it without knowing there was an original version
but the original version by Robert Palmer was also addicted ❤
You should try to listen to the original version with Robert Palmer .😊
