Phytate was abundant in hemp seed (also when hulled) (phytate 4 g/100 g), and could compromise iron and zinc absorption (phytates/Fe and phytates/Zn molar ratios above 20 and 15, respectively), as well as involve poor phosphorous absorption. Better when fermented with phytase enzym.

its got copious amounts of Iron too. Not sure why that was not mentioned (while magnesium is an important mineral I think its second to how important iron is for the body to function optimally)

been useing hemp seed for a few years now and its essential to use hemp seed with the shells to gain the fullest nutrition i grind mine down and had them to my favourite yoghurt for breakfast, with the shells it contains every amino acid and vitamin and mineral over all other foods and is easier to consume has it has a nice nutty taste...

+moonbear I agree. Whole Hemp seeds are best, and grinding takes away the problem of getting the shells stuck between your teeth. Soaking removes phytic acids and makes them more digestible but harder to grind, but great for blending into milks.

They are usually not legal to sell whole. Hulled are great too compared to most other foods.

they are legal to sell whole in the uk because they are sterile you could not replant and grow, all the goodness is still there though..

I’ve been cutting down on processed breakfast cereal by replacing 2/3 of my serving with hemp and chia seeds and using a coconut and soy milk blend.
Find that I feel more full and less hungry throughout the day, which has improved my mood - just a whole domino effect of improvement.
Maybe it’s placebo cause I can’t speak for or against it’s health claims, but I can definitely say more hemp seeds (or seeds in general) to gradually cut out the sugar-laden cereal and granola has led to improvements!

The Hemp seeds I've been looking at have less than one gram of fiber per serving. Is there a brand or type that has more? what's your suggestion for a good high fiber smoothie super food?

@dr.axe do you know if hemp milk is beneficial for toddlers. My son has eczema and we have removed the foods that are a trigger to him and it has helped him with his skin drastically. He’s dairy sensitivity is mild but now we’re removing casein too to help with his overall health. Thus we’re looking for CF milk. We are excited about weaning to hemp because nuts we can’t trust yet because of his food allergies. I’ve read hemp has a low content of THC, would you know anything about the exposure to it in toddlers. We are not vegan or would label ourselves anything really. We just want our son to have foods that are beneficial to his particular make up. We have never had the need to because no one else has allergies and eczema in our family. So we’re new at exploring different foods. Thank you

Hey Doctor Axe, What up bro? What I do is take 3 tablespoons of hemp seeds with vanilla sweetened almond milk as a breakfast before the gym. Is that good?

I've started putting ground hemp seeds in my yogurt with ground pumpkin, sunflower and walnuts. So far I'm only having a teaspoonful a day of hemp.
