THIS is the side of DT no one mentions or suggests. Sadly all the people who don't like DT that are over critical of the band who believe they are just a "wankfest", don't know or care to know about all their songs where they _hold back_ on the instrument virtuosity, yet use their "chops" to create a more melancholic mood to match the subject matter. It's just another part of Dream Theater that I have enjoyed since WDADU (in particular on that album, _within_ the songs to change the mood), especially from Images & Words, on.
Other songs that are like that; "Wait for sleep", "Another Day", "Surrounded", "Eve", "Lifting Shadows Off a Dream" (which I liken to Rush - "Mystic Rhythms"), "To Live Forever", "Anna Lee", "Hollow Years", "Take Away the Pain", "Beyond this Life", "Through Her Eyes", "The Spirit Carries On", "Disappear", "Goodnight Kiss", "Solitary Shell" and on . . . .

The Twelve Step Suite consists of 5 songs from different albums creating an album within five albums. One song from each of five different albums combined to make a "sub-album" dealing with Mike Portnoy's issues with addiction. Powerful album on its own. Also great idea to stick with studio songs from Dream Theater, IMO James Labrie has a great voice when he actually sings, but live he tends to fall into a pattern of yelling and screaming random vowels instead of singing the actual lyrics - it can get tremendously annoying.

    Hey dude !
I read quite a few comments here
But I didn't see any answers to your questions
... and as a 30+ year fan of Dream Theater I'm going to do my best to help you out.
First off the sounds of the "ambulance" lol
    ... or the siren
were all done by the keyboard player.
Anything that isn't drums bass or guitar
is taken care of by the keyboard player and quite often he will play with heavy almost guitar like sounds. Plus his solos are as good (or better) as the guitar player !!
    He's a Juliard trained virtuoso
    Jordan Rudess
he's better than all the other four in the band combined !!
    No joke
If you study the band a little bit deeper
you will understand that they are all very studied musicians
who went to school for music.
Pretty much the best of the best
and that's why they are fucking amazing.
I am a musician have been playing for 35 years.
I have been preaching this band since before they were Dream Theater
Scream to all of my musician friends and friends about how killer writers and players they are !!
Welcome to the world with the band Dream Theater
    Enjoy!!

Apologies if I mention anything you have already reacted to... I am just starting to work through your older videos. A few songs I would recommend are RUSH: Natural Science, Hemispheres, and La Villa Stangietto (instrumental). Iron Maiden: Phantom of the Opera and Rime of the Ancient Mainer (preferable from the Live After Death album), and Dream Theater: A Change of Seasons (This is to Dream Theater what 2112 is to RUSH), Learning to Live, Breaking All Illusions, and Stream of Consciousness (instrumental). as to the sirens, I believe the keyboardist hits a HotKey on his keyboard and it starts an mp3 soundtrack of Sirens in the distance. In one video, and a totally different song, I saw Rudis hit a key on the far bass end of the keys, and a sound effect started playing. So I say no it's not John on his guitar. He's good and beyond, but he ain't that....lol Also, I have really enjoyed watching your reaction videos. I have repeatedly watched them, and I'm always looking for your next Dream Theater reaction. No, I'm not weird, I just love DT. And now you know why. You have listened to them, and now You have the DT bug. I've had it since 1996. It was the awake album. Awesome! I also listen to All the other reaction videos of other people, reacting to Dream Theater here on TH-cam. I love watching the person reacting, eyes PoP out of the head. The expressions are usually a numb look.....followed by, "Are you fuckin* kiddin* me.??" Keep up the good work. You appear to be a pretty cool dude.

This song is pretty special for me. It is the first one of a suite composed of 5 songs that drummer Mike Portnoy composed. The songs together comprise 12 parts, each one corresponding to one step of the Alcoholic Anonymous (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Twelve-step_Suite). The other songs being "This Dying Soul", "The Root Of All Evil", "Repentance" and "The Shattered Fortress" (each one belonging to a different album). Also, that "chicken fry" sound at the beginning should be of a vinyl record player with its needle on a part of the disc where there is no music but noise (it is the ending of last album's last song, "Finally Free" of Metropolis, Pt. 2: Scenes from a Memory). They also keep on using the last note of the last song of an album as the first one of the first song of the following album in the next three albums (Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence - with its 6 songs, Train of Thought - with its 7 songs, and Octavarium - with its 8 songs). Yes, these people love to put easter eggs on their albums.

Just found your channel and have been watching ur vids all damn night long. Great reactions to some awesome music. I love to see reactions from people who have not heard music outside of their experience. Having said that, I do have a huge request...a song I have asked others to react to with no response, but I'll keep trying. The song is called "Last Chance" and the band is Shooting Star. This epic is from 1980 by a band from Kansas City, Mo that should have made it much bigger, but was overshadowed by bands like Kansas and Triumph with similar sounds. This song is probably the most epic sounding jam that just builds and builds all the way to the finish. It's roughly about the story of Moses, but not in a straightforward kind of way. With strong lyrics, big drums and a gigantic ending, it will leave you standing and calling for more! You just gotta trust me on this one, it is one of the most powerful songs EVER!!!!
I'm 10 years older than you and grew up on classic rock and singer-song writer music in the 70's, than went heavy metal and head banger in the 80's and 90's. Now I'm all about the reggae with the new west coast sound hittin' me hard. As such, I'm out of my realm on rap and hip hop. I'd like to ask you to turn a rock guy on to a few suggestions I can check out myself if you would like to hit me with somethings. Peace and music to you!

Jamal, you ABSOLUTELY need to try "Six Degrees of Inner Turbulance" suite in its whole! It is a multi-part suite, about 45 minutes long, actually the whole second disc of the very album "The Glass Prison" opens. And this whole-disc-song is truly THE VERY BEST SONG DT EVER MADE!!! The best song in all the prog metal, I should even say! Bro, until you listen to this, you've never truly lived! And, compating to the first disc of the album, the exorbitant quantity of notes do not sound too overwhelming, it's actually pretty relaxing in certain places:) and the vocals! James Labrie only fully opened here on the whole album, the first disc was more like a warm-up for him) And the LYRICS! Please, make yourself such a wonderful gift, react to it!

so back in the day, before the album was released, DT gave us some demos and teasers of this album. a few of the songs, edited a bit shorter or changed a bit. imagine being a DT fan back then, knowing what they are capable of, and you get some teasers for the album! it was amazing! then we finally heard Glass Prison first on the album and were like OMGGGGGGG :) you look like how i felt in january 2002 :D

greeting from Italy, i like a lot yours reaction... Imho Dream theater are the best musician now because they are capable to merge deep lyrics with a message (spirit carries on, illumination theory), telling stories (metropolis part 2 it is a whole jurney) with an incredible music tecnique... plz do more DT reactions (but not the too known one like panic attack, winther and other that only shallow fans will suggest to you, shallow not as an offence just that do not know in deep DT xD)

By the way, I didn’t see it in the comments. This song was mostly written by, then drummer, Mike Portnoy. It’s the beginning of the 12-Step Suite of songs that he wrote about addiction and sobriety. He was an alcoholic and addict for some years. He went through the 12 Steps to get sober.

That intro is sound of rain
Intro of the glass prison (1st song of six degrees of inner turbulence album) is the same with outro of scene nine: finally free (the last song from metropolis pt. 2: scenes from a memory)

Thank you for looking up the meaning of the song. Its one of a couple of others to complete this. You already did dying soul which is the second song to the 12 step suite. the next one would be "The Root of all Evil" - Octavarium and the last one "The Shattered Fortress" They dedicated one song per album over 4 years for this 12 steps to overcome the addiction of mike. This is really really personal and I would love to see you reacting to all of the songs. Two to go.

You make the best comments. So raw but to on target. "...It's almost unfair". That's magazine level review stuff right there specially considering you came up with that on the spot. You also picked up that the drumer and the guitarrist were having sorta of a fight....which is funny considering...
