Neil Peart, the drummer, is a master lyricist. He wrote all of their lyrics from when he started in their band in summer of 1974, after they made their first album with their first drummer John Rutsey.
Not all of them. Oddly enough, "Tom Sawyer", one of their most well-known songs, isn't even Neil's writing. It was written by another lyricist named Pye Dubois.
In the December 1985 Rush Backstage Club newsletter, drummer and lyricist Neil Peart said: Tom Sawyer was a collaboration between myself and Pye Dubois, an excellent lyricist who wrote the lyrics for Max Webster. His original lyrics were kind of a portrait of a modern day rebel, a free-spirited individualist striding through the world wide-eyed and purposeful. I added the themes of reconciling the boy and man in myself, and the difference between what people are and what others perceive them to be-namely me, I guess.

Yeah that's tough because if that is a fun version of a song they've played live 20,000 times. Part of that performance is changing it up for their own enjoyment. So here's the tough part you have to review both that live version and the original which is a masterpiece. Start with the studio version so you can see where they are coming from.
I agree that anyone should always start with the original track, and YOU should tell him that, the fact is it’s a great version and a dedication to the city who got them air play is beside the point.

Aw man . . . "Available Light" is one of my all time faves, the SNAP of Peart's snare . . . GODLY. Also "Losing It", "Between the Wheels" and "Everyday Glory" are huge faves of mine.
Available Light is a truly deep cut from Presto! Highly underrated tune from an equally underrated album!! Scars, War Paint, Chain Lighting, Red Tides, from top to bottom an incredible album. First from this album, however should be The Pass.
@@brettmarlar4154 Hold Your Fire is the culmination of their progression. They kind of started over again on Presto and slowly reverted backwards away from grand orchestration and production to whatever you want to call their later album's styles.
@@evankeal Hold Your Fire, was a turning point of their career. Not the beginning of a "devolution" or "regression". They did strip things back a bit for Presto, only because they wanted to shift the focus back to their core instruments. There were still plenty of over dubs like layering of guitar parts, and the keyboards were still very present, just pushed back from the forefront. They became more of a secondary support for the guitar as opposed to the other way around. Alex would even star adding Mandola and Bazuki to add different textures as opposed to synths and effects. If anything, this freed Alex up to play more, complex and challenging parts; thus allowing them to regain some of that raw edge and intensity that they had lost from the 70's and blend it with the sophistication gained in the 80's. A song like "Driven" wouldn't have happened if they were still beholden to all the synths and sequencers. We definitely wouldn't have gotten the instrumentals since then.
I'm always in awe of Rush's lyrics. I don't think there's very many other bands, that use such complex wording and phrases in their music. Like some of the "big" words they use I doubt anyone has ever used in a song before. They are such amazing storytellers and their music requires some real thought to understand the messages. The way they examine things so deeply like life, the universe, existence, the human condition, whether it be in our world or an alternate one, or another time. I'm always amazed.
Neil understood the rhythmic quality of the words he used. It was something he loved doing. There is a reason why having a percussionist/drummer being the lyricist is so damn brilliant.
RUSH my favorite all time band. Though I like and have seen plenty of other's. You want lyrics of RUSH you should check out The Twilight Zone off the 2112 lp. RUSH does a rap bit in their song ROLL THE BONES on their ROLL THE BONES LP. You should check that out. Plus songs like XANADU from their A Farewell to Kings LP. Actually you should check out their entire lp catalog.
Want great/meaningful lyrics (but still with fabulous music): "Red Sector A" - holocaust "The Pass" - Suicide "Manhatten Project" - The 'A' Bomb "Losing it" - Losing ones skill/talent through aging "The Garden" - How one should live life in general (this is on many a fans funeral list) Red Barchetta - story of dystopian future when cars are banned (similar theme as 2112, but condensed) Cygus X-1 Book 1 & 2 (must be done together really) - function of the brain told as a sci-fi type story …. and many others … these are ones where Lyric videos useful more music orientated classics (that I'd recommend): Jacobs Ladder - depicts a passing storm Leave That things Alone - pure instrumental depicting the mating dance …. that'll do from me for now
First and foremost thank you for appreciating this beautiful piece of music lyrics that you are reading comes from the brilliant mind of mr. Neal piert also keeping the beat to this brilliant piece of rock and roll he was truly a brilliant mind you dont need a psychiatrist to explain how the human mind works when you got Neal piert... also one of the world's greatest drummers of all time we rush fans miss him so much again thank you for appreciating
You hit the nail on the head when you referenced the early/mid 80's soundtrack/ambiance music. The synths were very familiar sounding . RUSH , of course , being superior musicians made the best use of the current technology , at that time. 1976 - 1988 was my favorite era of RUSH
Also look at King Crimson from their USA album: 21st Century Schizoid Man, Exiles, Asbury Park, Starless, Larks Tongues in Aspic part 2, and Lament. You might like those.
Hi my fellow man who is so solid and truly is digesting the cerebral and incredibly tight offering Rush provides. You're such a breath of fresh air, witnessing you absorbing the prowess of a professional band for discerning people. God love ya buddy. ✌🙂🇨🇦. I had the privilege of interacting with these guys, Alex Lifeson's son and I used to work and chill together. It's my personal opinion that the drummer, Neil Peart quite effectively WAS a humble, unrivaled professor on the drum kit. Love and peace be with you and yours. Rush are topshelf family-centred gentlemen. Compliments from Canada. ✌
Mel...If I may refer to as your family does...I have been the 'ultimate' RUSH fan since I was a teen - yep decades - I got hooked on their live album 'All The World's a Stage". I found the drums of Neil Peart to be beyond stellar and Geddy and Alex to be phenomenal as well! Thanks for bringing the excitement back of re-discovering this awesome band. Thank You!
Glad to see some finally listened to one of the most underrated Rush songs they've produced. It's been one of my favorites for may years, this one and "Witch Hunt". You might want to check out "The Camera Eye" some day too. Very few people have reacted to this song.
Of all of their songs, this one is my favorite. I couldn't tell you why. I've been listening to them since the beginning and while I love more than I don't (and I think they've had some real stinkers), this one just resonates.
It is so cool to see you opening up and "getting" Rush. Regarding the lyrics...and music...as Neil said in an interview....Rush is a thinking man's band.
Coming from my perspective as an English teacher inspired to do his job by Neil Peart, and a decades long guitar hobbyist who writes lyrics occasionally for my own music, Neil made the strongest case for why a drummer with writing abilities (working closely with the vocalist, of course), should be a band's primary lyricist. I'm loving your reactions to Rush, man. Thank you!
This may be my favorite song. Your look of confusion at the beginning was priceless. There’s so much syncopation, weird time signatures. Like a lot of Rush stuff, “Who does that?” It shouldn’t work, but it does, beautifully.
You should've heard this live, there's nothing like it in the world. Unadulterated artistic expression, and these guys were masters of it. So much fun to watch them play and one of the very few bands I've seen that were better live than they were in studio.
Rush- All The World's A Stage...............LIVE and vintage. Saw them with UFO and Max Webster, maybe 78'. And many times afterwards, Peart, insane drummer. Badass!!
Jamal, I just love how you get them. I loved what you said about lyrically this could have been an awesome Rap. I’m not a fan of rap musically, but the artistry in it, is the rhythm of the vocal. The technical brilliance to make the human voice be able to rhythmically DO what good rap artists do is tough as hell. And my ear can appreciate that. So what you had to say made sense. There is a reason why having a percussionist like Neil being a lyricist is so damn genius. And you caught it right away.
These lyrics spoke to me in a profound way when I found Rush at 16 years old. It's was the first time I realised that I was not alone in my mind. That other people thought about life this way.
I’m a 58 year old black man and I’ve been into Rush since Moving Pictures came out! ... I LOVE their musicality and as a hobby drummer, Neil has always been at the top ... BUT this is the first time I’ve read all the lyrics of this song! I’m falling love all over again!

Music from the future, set in the past... That's called a seqencer, the synthesiser part you were referencing.
@Raymond Rocha It came to me in a dream...😉
You are so right about the lyrics, it’s a huge part of Rush and you are just scratching the surface with these guys 40 plus years of great music
If you want some rush deep cuts “Manhattan project “ and “available light” are great
Available Light is a fabulous song.
Aw man . .
Amazing lyrics. Amazing music. Amazing band! I've known since 1977. My all time favorite band
You've got to hit every song on the Moving Pictures album. Every one of them is stellar. You won't be disappointed.
One of those Rush masterpieces where the music fits the great lyrics so perfectly.
Want great/meaningful lyrics (but still with fabulous music):
"Red Sector A" - holocaust
"The Pass" - Suicide
"Manhatten Project" - The 'A' Bomb
"Losing it" - Losing ones skill/talent through aging
"The Garden" - How one should live life in general (this is on many a fans funeral list)
Red Barchetta - story of dystopian future when cars are banned (similar theme as 2112, but condensed)
Cygus X-1 Book 1 & 2 (must be done together really) - function of the brain told as a sci-fi type story
…. and many others … these are ones where Lyric videos useful
more music orientated classics (that I'd recommend):
Jacobs Ladder - depicts a passing storm
Leave That things Alone - pure instrumental depicting the mating dance
…. that'll do from me for now
Dude, Manhattan project and Jacob's ladder!
Natural Science... definitely.
@@rayanthony7463 hes done that one, check it out
@@UroboricNate these are the two listed that if I play them once, I immediately repeat (been know to listen to Jacobs Ladder 6 times in a row)
Red Barchetta is a must
My favorite Rush song! Glad you enjoyed it
Love that bass
First and foremost thank you for appreciating this beautiful piece of music lyrics that you are reading comes from the brilliant mind of mr. Neal piert also keeping the beat to this brilliant piece of rock and roll he was truly a brilliant mind you dont need a psychiatrist to explain how the human mind works when you got Neal piert... also one of the world's greatest drummers of all time we rush fans miss him so much again thank you for appreciating
I highly recommend their song “The Pass” about teen suicide. Deep lyrics for sure 👍
Still Kickin defintely. the sparse instrumentation and ambience is amazing.
The Pass always hit me
G bless
You hit the nail on the head when you referenced the early/mid 80's soundtrack/ambiance music. The synths were very familiar sounding . RUSH , of course , being superior musicians made the best use of the current technology , at that time. 1976 - 1988 was my favorite era of RUSH
Also look at King Crimson from their USA album: 21st Century Schizoid Man, Exiles, Asbury Park, Starless, Larks Tongues in Aspic part 2, and Lament. You might like those.
@Richard Adlin These are good suggestions for a review. However, KC will block the video.
Oh, also had the good fortune of seeing them in concert 32 times, starting in 1977. Enlightening is an understatement. 😁❤✌🇨🇦
Yeah! One of my fav from Power Trio!
Thank You!
Jamel, if, like me, you truly enjoy Rush, you should give this a try: The Warning !
I saw RUSH live more than any other band I have gone to see. They were so fantastic and awesome!
Okay, it's time. You are ready. Please react to "The Camera Eye." Warning: Transition overload coming your way!!
The Nightfly
The Camera Eye may be the best track on Moving Pictures, which is insane! And that solo is arguably (one of) Lerxst’s finest.
My favorite Rush song. It reminds me of Ventura beach CA.
hey now, there you go quite the sleeper track ma dude
Bushanie24 Tucked in my blanket named Rebecca
@@amorodioamor4388 well, I guess I need a rebecca in my life then hahah
Glad to see some finally listened to one of the most underrated Rush songs they've produced. It's been one of my favorites for may years, this one and "Witch Hunt". You might want to check out "The Camera Eye" some day too. Very few people have reacted to this song.
Great reaction mate, Please react to Red Barchetta
Of all of their songs, this one is my favorite. I couldn't tell you why. I've been listening to them since the beginning and while I love more than I don't (and I think they've had some real stinkers), this one just resonates.
If you want deep try "Entre Nous" with lyrics
Yes
Entre nous would be a great choice
I still want you to do anthem. Lol
One of their best!!
Great music has no expiration date!!
That is RUSH!!!!! 🤘🤘🤘🤘
Funk, jazz, blues, new wave, and rock all meshed together and done so smoothly.
It is so cool to see you opening up and "getting" Rush. Regarding the lyrics...and music...as Neil said in an interview....Rush is a thinking man's band.
This has always been one of my top Rush songs. This one should have been a hit!
Watching smoke roll out your ears over Rush is truly a treat!
Love RUSH.
One of my favs since I first heard them around 1980
I seen every RUSH tour since 1981, totaling to 21 times. RUSH is special and thanks for sharing. Peace!
My favorite track from Rush. Just tremendous.
This music has such deep meanings to me. Grew up with this music and it helped to form me as a person.
I've listened to this song so many times and it still hits the same everytime. God I love Rush.
Love watching you geek out to Rush lyrics with the rest of us, man! Pure poetry.
You got it. They are the package. Well said. Amazing. This band is a life message. Thank you for everything to them and yourself.
These lyrics spoke to me in a profound way when I found Rush at 16 years old. It's was the first time I realised that I was not alone in my mind. That other people thought about life this way.
I love seeing an open mind and open heart loving new music. appreciate the reaction and the response.
