    Excellent reaction. Your first exposure to DT is something you’ll never forget. It’s so unique and completely mind blowing. And this isn’t even their best song (though I would put it in their top third).
    Song is super deep as well. The drummer, Mike Portnoy, struggled with alcoholism from a young age and this song (and several others) chronicles his journey through the AA 12 step program and his road to recovery. Glass Prison is the first 3 steps, and the journey continues through Dying Soul, Root of All Evil, Repentance, and Shattered Fortress throughout the next 4 albums.
    As far as where to go next, that’s a difficult question. Depends on if your looking for an epic adventure (they have a lot of songs over 15 minutes long that take you on quite a journey) or something a bit shorter and more accessible (and by shorter, I mean less than 10 minutes long, but longer than 6). They really don’t have a bad song in their repertoire, though some are a bit weak but only in comparison with their better music. DT at their weakest is generally steps above most bands at their strongest.

    I'm always more than a little anxious when folks react to DT for the first time, especially when they don't have much experience with Prog. DT is a band that I've loved for 25 years, and I know prog isn't to everyone's liking. But knowing how much you've loved Tool and Pink Floyd, I was hopeful that you'd be one of the guys to 'get it'. This is the only reaction video I’ve ever (intentionally) re-watched. It was just as entertaining the second time. I smiled through damn near the whole 13+ minutes.
    I got into Dream Theater because a friend played me their live album “Once in a Livetime” and their amazing concept album “Metropolis Pt. 2: Scenes from a Memory.” They both blew my mind like this. So, when Six Degrees came out, I bought it on release day. This is the opening track and like you, my jaw about hit the floor. And I actually knew what to expect. I was still blown away.
    This is actually part one of a five song suite about drummer Mike Portnoy’s struggle with and recovery from alcoholism. Each song was on a different album. The next one, which is highly recommended, is “This Dying Soul.”

    Drummer Portnoy’s struggle with alcohol was previously the subject of “The Mirror,” a song from Dream Theater’s 1994 album Awake. After he stopped drinking, Portnoy decided to write a suite of tracks describing the twelve-step program which would span several albums. This is first song of the Twelve-step suite. “The Glass Prison” contains the first three parts of the Suite (“Reflection,” “Restoration,” and “Revelation”)

  • @popollo22
    @popollo22 5 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    This is one of their heaviest songs but not their best. The song was actually about the drummer's 12 step program with AA. This song covers 3 stages and the next 4 albums each carried a song about the final 9 steps. If you are going to delve into DT, there are 13 studio albums and you will find that all of their albums sound completely different and even in the same song you can go from multiple different styles of music multiple times. You seriously never know what you are going to get or which emotion/mood it will cover. Definitely check out the 2 epics others have mentioned (A Change of Seasons, Octavarium). I have a feeling you would enjoy the craziness of "Six Degree of Inner Turbulence" which is on the same album you just listened to. It is 40 some minutes split into several acts. You should react to some of the professional live concerts, will blow your mind (Score, Live at Budokan, Live Scenes from NY, Live at Luna Park, Live from the Boston Opera House).

    This was the first Dream Theater song I ever heard back in 2002. I'll never forget that moment. Changed my life.
