Lmao As I said before Welcome to Dream Theater That outro will blow some minds Glad you caught that Full speed shred on guitar - keyboard following right along (in harmony no less) You got it And yeah if that had gone on any longer - there would have been a tear in the space time continuum !!! The musicians band ! And you should do the entire 12 step suite (pronounced "sweet") All of those pieces were written by the drummer (before he retired from DT) and all aligned with his addiction to alcohol. I think that would be a great continuation to your introduction to Dream Theater Enjoy ! Cheers 🍻 🇨🇦🤘🏻🎶
You should check out their epics... Change of Seasons, Count of Tuscany, Octavarium, Nightmare to Remember.. anything over 20 minutes.. that's where Dream Theater really shines.
Yes, yes, yes..... would die to see his reaction to the count of Tuscany!!!! One of if not the greatest of DT. That and Home from scenes from a memory! He has to hear that also!
I have to disagree with you Images and Words and then Awake are their best work that was back when Kevin Moore was the keyboardist and he's the one that created the sound but they have today.
I was pretty happy to see you discover Dream Theater in the way you have. These are some very strong intros into the band, and that entire album with the eyeball is fuggin amazing. Kudos to you (and your audience's) taste in music. Loved your reaction to this track; it's one hell of a ride. Considering your reactions to Rush and DT, I can think of a few bands that will fit right into the musical path you seem to be traveling. There are many more, but first in my mind are: - Porcupine Tree (a more modern sounding Pink Floyd?) whatever, it's top shelf. - Steven Wilson (of Porcupine Tree). // Some truly epic masterpieces featuring some of the world's most talented musicians. - Haken // Haken has snuck up to the top of my prog/metal playlist in recent months. The Mountain is an *amazing* work of music from beginning to end. - Animals as Leaders // mind-bending, complex, very likely not like anything you've heard before. - Liquid Tension Experiment (mostly members of Dream Theater, no vocals). So. Much. Creativity. Can't. Breathe.
Hah, fantastic reaction! I'm sure some have mentioned parts but in full: Mike Portnoy, the drummer at the time, wrote 5 songs over the course of five albums, that link together as the "Twelve-step Suite", dealing with his alcoholism: 1. The Glass Prison (2002 - Steps 1-3: Reflection, Restoration, Revelation) 2. This Dying Soul (2003 - Steps 4-5: Reflections of Reality, Release) 3. The Root Of All Evil (2005 - Steps 6-7: Ready, Remove) 4. Repentance (2007 - Steps 8-9: Regret, Restitution) 5. Shattered Fortress (2009 - Steps 10-12: Restraint, Receive, Responsible) While you did these first two in reverse order, I think you should finish off the last 3 since you already started on this particular journey. Keep it up :) Edit: I watched the Glass Prison reaction and saw you looked it up as well, good. Context definitely important here.
Man. Your reactions are the best ever recorded. The appreciation you have for instruments and unbelievably unbelievably incredible.Wow I just don't know to say you are amazing
I think it's my favorite DT album as well. I look forward to his reaction to their stuff since you know darn well it's out of his comfort zone. DT isn't for everyone and I give Jamal a lot of credit for diving right into it.
Physical reactions to music is why metal and prog in particular is my favorite genre of music. Sure, you get emotional when listening to certain melodies or beats and that gives shivers, sweaty hands and a little tear as a consequence of the emotions triggered by some music. But this guitar playing and the snappy drums makes my body twitch like someone was literally tapping me each time a note is played. Its just so fantastic. And the electricity .. oh man.
To be fair, it did sound like a grand piano (I saw the Live at Budokan DVD, I know it is one of the many sounds his keyboards have), but I would not expect him to not recognize when there is a keyboard and a guitar solo (or an unison, like at the end), because Jordan's sound is way different than everything else
I believe this is one of the songs written by the drummer Mike Portnoy, as a series detailing his journey overcoming alcoholism. On a side note, the DT songs that Portnoy has the biggest hand at writing, or a significant amount of creative input... Tend to be my favorites from them.
Your expressions are absoludelete.Flawless your expressions, your surprise look and the way you look at the camera and utter is exasperous.Ness is just income
Man, I was afraid your head might explode towards the end of this one, glad your still with us. You are definitely going to have to keep going back to the well with these guys, they have one hell of a discography full of amazing songs.
So glad you found these folks, i did a few years back, through some Gentle Giant. So. Much. Beautiful. Music. Out. There. And life goes on, and on, and on. For a come down I suggest some Ozark Mountain Daredevils ;) pick near anything, you won't be dissapoint. Cheers from Canada!
Okay, I've seen a lot of reaction videos but this is one of the first channels where I'm literally laughing watching it. Yeah, all those notes that fly by have a tendency to kinda melt your mind. And it's fun to watch some one willingly walk into 1000 notes a minute.
This whole album is amazing. They chose to go a bit more heavy, straightforward -- from a Dream Theater/prog metal standpoint -- and it's killer. Progressive but not to the point where it can scare people away.
U fucking rock bro!!! This is my fav band of all time. I have been a fan since 1990. I love seeing ur amazement by them it brings me back to when I first bought their album from the BMG music catalog. Rock on Sir and thank you!
One of your best reactions right here Jamel. I first watched this when you uploaded it last year. I had to watch it again today after seeing your "Under a Glass Moon" reaction. Keep it up man. Feel free to visit more DT. "They take you for one hell of a ride".
A fantastic song. Part of Mike portnoys 12 step suite. About him dealing with his alcoholism. You should definitely listen to all 5 songs of the suite in order.
hahahaha I love your reactions. If you are ever curious to see how this is possible to be played live, they played this song on their "Live and Budokan" show. Enjoy!
Good lord do I love that you're enjoying some Dream Theater as it's not for everyone lol. Dream Theater has always been "you get a solo, and you get a solo, and you get a solo, and you get a time signature change, and you get a time signature change!" Definitely take a listen to "Home" off their excellent concept album Scenes From A Memory. In fact, legit do a full hour and thirty and just react to how beautiful that album is in its entirety. They actually performed the entire album live recently and it's up on TH-cam somewhere. If you do cover it, enjoy man!
This music is colorless, Invisible, and odorless... Unless you got the Stankface!! Something of note, the keyboardist, Jordan Rudess, was given a scholarship to Juilliard at age 9!!!
I love your reactions... You should watch this song in a live vid.... so you can watch the artists at work.... watching these guys live is truly amazing
You could listen to this 100 times and catch something you missed each time. It's amazing and needs 100 listens just to realize how amazing it is. Best musicians ever.
This is the song that comes after The Glass Prison in the twelve step suite. I didn't know if you realized that when you mentioned it in the glass prison video, but yeah they're both really great and deep songs.
The craziest part of that outro? That's the keyboard and guitar playing that together. The amount of skill to even play it alone, in time, but to do it with someone else? Craziness
.. it takes a couple listens man :D to get your head around all those different parts and how it comes together into an insane flow altogether. Some ppl might see this as just random jamming, but I feel a flow in this. Even tho its a crazy one. Loved your reaction, have a good one man
You should definitely finish out the 12 Step Suite at this point since you listened to this song and The Glass Prison. The 12 Step suite is Glass Prison, This Dying Soul, The Root of All Evil, Repentance, and The Shattered Fortress.
4:52 lol I love you man 8:40 They are aces when it comes to timing changes. You might enjoy "Space Dyed Vest" It was on the cd but I think it isn't on the cassette.
These guys are all recommending great Dream Theater tracks, and I love their enthusiasm.. but you gotta finish that 12-step suite before you do other reactions to this band. The last song hits so much harder if you still have the first four in your head
You need to check out stream of conciousness from their live at budokan video. Insane playing from dream theater. Live at budokan is the live dvd they made for this albums tour cycle.
Yeah, that last solo was guitar and keyboard playing together in Harmony.... Crazy good!!!! They have some slower stuff. They two songs "Take the time"(video) and "illumination Theory" live from Boston (video) Illumination Theory is epic live (they have a choir and a orchestra singing and playing with them....😳🔥
There are technically songs that come before The Glass Prison and the 12 Steps Suites, it starts with The Mirror and Lie. The Glass Prison through the rest are the 12 steps part but The Mirror and Lie kick it off.
I remember mh first Dream Theater live experience, they opened with Dark Eternal Night. Maaan that intro and outro is so damn nasty I was surprised there was no mosh pit lol
From what I understand, every member of this band is a virtuoso of their instruments. Although I'm not a big fan, it's just that I haven't delved into this band enough. My brother loves them, he introduced them to me, They put on one hell of a live show too.
The first time I heard them, I was coming off of discovering Rush and Led Zeppelin thanks to my brother. I was physically shattered by how ungodly talented DT is. Plus discovering they were still touring was like a godsend, and I managed to see them live before Portnoy left. Best experience of my life. Got to see them absolutely shred Constant Motion in person.
You also have to check out The Mirror/Lie from the Awake album to appreciate the full magnitude of the entire 12 step suite. It's an early precursor to this entire group of masterpieces.
wife and i saw them in detroit a couple years ago. should do Metropolis part 1 (Images and Words). then do whole album metropolis part 2. btw the show was AWESOME!! Go see them if you can!!!
Okay I haven't even watched this yet. I cannot believe you're doing a dream theater song and I so hate it that you didn't start out with the Images and Words album. I wish so much you could have started out with Pull Me Under because it would at least have eased you into it haha. ❤️😇🎼🎶
Owen Davey covered this song in its entirety by himself, playing all the instruments. If you're reading this you have to watch it, it's frankly insane how talented the dude is.
"AAAAAh Shit!" Perfect. I want to know who the hell that guitarist is, this is only my 2nd time listening to this band. I will be going down the rabbit hole with this band.
Hey dude! Been enjoying your reaction vids and this is a great Dream Theater choice. Can definitely recommend "The Best Of Times" by this band. Also "Marathon" by Rush and "High Hopes" by Pink Floyd. Do check these out and react to them please. Greetings from the UK Best Wishes Chris
This is a great lesson in psychology " I wanna feel your body breaking and shaking and left in the cold , I wanna heal your conscious making" Rather than listening to somebody's weakness, you have to be severe with em sometimes so they don't become lazy and hopeless and dependant
Go and listen Tendinitis by Jason Richardson, he’s a young solo guitarist that was invited by John Petrucci to his clinics. John Petrucci is Dream Theater guitarist. So yeah Jason is that good.
Check out these great mind-blowing epics from Dream Theater as well: Dark Eternal Night In the Presence of Enemies Part 1 and 2 Learning to Live Metropolis Part 1 Metropolis Part 2: Scenes From a Memory (the whole album is a rock opera) Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence (Disc 2) In the Name of God .... Just to name a few
Try Dance of Eternity or Lie. Sorry so many messages but I can't help but I'm excited this is my band. they aren't as good now because Kevin Moore left if you go back and listen to Images and Words and the Awake album you will hear the difference because when he left they had to get a keyboardist, that could half way do what he did. I know you understand.
James LaBrie... I swear.... I'm a damn Dream Theater fan since "Images And Words".... I put Dream Theater on the top 3 greatest bands and musicians, like a 4 horsemen: TOOL, Opeth, Therion and Dream Theater.... in this same order of greatness. Now you have the background for my next affirmation: James LaBrie 's voice, especially when leaves the low notes to go high, is the weak link in this assemble of greatness. I guess that's why my favorite Dream Theater are when gone full instrumental. PS: Mike Portnoy and John Petrucci are gods bringing the whole band on their own large and strong shoulders!
According to legend: In a time long ago, Chuck Norris was politely asked to return one super-ultra-mega power so at least one would be available for the next guy. That power happened to be guitar talent and John Petrucci was the next guy in line. So the legend goes.
When you mentioned the "Mario when he has the star" I could not stop laughing!! You have to listen to Panic Attack! That is the true Mario plowing through everyone with the star song! :D

Now you got "The Root of All Evil", "Repentance", and "The Shattered Fortress" to complete it.
gotta love The Shattered Fortress for the Prayer of St. Francis.
Repentance.... *swoon*
The Root of All Evil has some really good grooves. Its heavier and not as proggy either
...and that riff shift at 8:44 when you’re like “Ohhh!”, priceless.

Bro I love you and I love your channel man
During one of there studio sessions they speak about the guitarist John Petrucci playing so fast that it turns into one note.
Love the reactions Jamel. Is there any chance we could see you react to Dreamtheater - Dance of Eternity Live Breaking the Fouth Wall?
Thank You🙏🏾
Also Breaking All Illusions from that same show. One of John's best live solos.
According to legend:
In a time long ago, Chuck Norris was politely asked to return one super-ultra-mega power so at least one would be available for the next guy.
That power happened to be guitar talent and John Petrucci was the next guy in line. So the legend goes.
Petrucci is probably the best guitarist on the planet..tightest band ive ever seen live. Unbelievable.
When you mentioned the "Mario when he has the star" I could not stop laughing!! You have to listen to Panic Attack! That is the true Mario plowing through everyone with the star song! :D
He did it already th-cam.com/video/i_GyyAtUiGs/w-d-xo.html
