Fan of this movie here: The "bodyguard" he refers to is a expert swordsman they've hired at the beggining of the movie. If you notice, he says in japanese: "Sensei [something bla bla]"
Love this movie. It's definitely more of an 'art house' movie though rather than an action film. One of my favourite scenes is where he's walking out in the countryside and the farmers working the fields become part of the soundtrack which I found strangely, beautifully hypnotic.
If someone is blind, their other senses improve, such as hearing and feeling. When I was in Singapore, I did this blind experience thing with my class where we were in a dark room and the staff are all blind. They could tell how much money I gave them when we were in a “restaurant”.
I loved this movie when I saw it the first time. Then I saw some of the old Zatoichi movies. The contrast here is that this guy is way more of a badass, but old Zatoichi is more believable as a blind man. His fighting style is completely different.
Old Ichi would often fake clumsiness to keep his opponents optimistic, otherwise everyone just froze in terror, Ichi had other things to get to that day.. Also he virtually never bothered to kill unarmed peeps, no challenge.. This Ichi is grey haired, I'm guessing older, more jaded.. just as easy to gack an unarmed guy as not.. _flash_
To aim for surprise means to hide and lurk. Even if the other party is blind, as long as we have such an awareness imprinted on us, it is not surprising that we would take this action. If this were me, I would surely act the same way. Because it comes from my own life-supported (and can surprise people) experience, and it is an action that I can take on the spur of the moment.
The music direction in this movie is top notch. I love how they cut out just as he killed the first dude. And the farming and construction scenes are 🔥🔥🔥 too
I like the slashes and cuts in the fights. That’s what makes this the best lone swordsman movie for me. If they made a remake of this movies or a sequel, I would be all over it.
Right at the end he kills a guy, leaves him holding his scabbard in a deathgrip, then after killing the last man just throws his sword backwards into the scabbard. What a boss.
@@chuongtruong1676 I suppose it's a lot more efficient to use digital effects as you don't have to clean the set up every time they mess up a stunt but still looks odd!
@@davidjsaul It's an objectively poor decision to use CGI for blood in any medium. They used to do scenes like this in one take. The editing is worse than the CGI.
@@maskcollector6949 Yep, I agree. Even more annoying is it still looks incredibly fake even now. Given how good CGI is these days it seems ridiculous that they can't make CGI blood look more realistic!
@@davidjsaul It's not going to match reality anytime soon, sticking to practical effects indefinitely because it's got more depth because you get an actual reaction from the actors.
True. By the way, I've just watched the old movie, Zatoichi's Flashing Sword, and the only time Zatoichi got hurt was when he was hit by a piece of tile in the head. He started bleeding then, and that was pretty much the ending. The ending was a bit weird but Zatoichi still killed everyone and won.
Some chick made him bleed, and a baby bit his nipple.. but his only consistent weakness seems to be firearms.. if he's not close enough. Good thing it's set in the 1840's.
No it wasn't. Do you understand what a 'simple' pan is? The shot is a close-up transitioning through a pan into a mid-shot whilst conserving momentum. It's not a 'simple' shot by a long run, even if it looks 'simple' to you.
Just one of his many attempts to do a bit of everything to sell himself. He openly talked about how he hates video games. But of course, he'll still make one cause cash.
This is when CGi still involved in the sword fighting scenes, right before Rurouni Kenshin (Live Action) Series has been born with less CGi involving..
I really appreciate how they treated the classic Zatoichi memetics here with the CGI and whatnot. Zatoichi is the Michael Myers of justice and I think this movie did a good job covering it. Don't run from Zatoichi. Try to ambush Zatoichi. Use a gun or a ranged weapon against Zatoichi. And so on.
I mean, I have to admit it. Takeshi Kitano plays a marvelously frightening version of 座頭市, but I’ve gotten so used to Shintaro Katsu as embodying 座頭市, that’s it’s difficult to accept anyone else. Kitano is great in actually acting as a blind man would. Credit where credit is due.
wonderfully scripted and choreographed production replete with ironic, even whimsical touches that makes this quirky Zatoichi film almost something you can watch with your family!

His kills symbolize death and his blindess symbolizes the inability to see. Truly brilliant writing.

I love this movie but I suggest you look up the original film series with Shintaro Katsu, trust me, you'll see something more on them.
