Shintaro Katsu was magnificent as this character. Best acting I've EVER seen. No formal martial arts experience but his older brother was a top martial artist in Japan. He learned enough to pull off this gig!
My absolute favorite actor. I can watch him in any role as he always steals the show no matter who’s in the shot with him. Not to mention his athletic ability. I really wish it hadn’t taken until my mid fifties to discover what a great showman he was. Peace!
Zatoichi pulled this trick in "Zatoichi and the Chess Expert" and probably in other movies as well, the gambling scenes in the various films are always my favorites. RIP Katsu Shintaro

Ichi especially disliked the phrase "blind bastard"...if you get a second chance, people learn quickly not to piss off Zatoichi....Btw...there are 25 Zatoichi movies in existence as well as 4 years of some of the finest television episodes ever made.... While Shintaro Katsu wasn't blind in real life, his acting was phenomenal both as a blind man and as a Daredevil like samurai...I encourage anyone interested to check out the Zatoichi series....it's out there and easily reachable....

It was the assistant director who made Okumura take a serious look, and he was one of the staff members who had been hurriedly recruited with no experience in period dramas. It was reported as a major scandal, with problems such as ``safety management problems in serious use'' and ``the production attitude of continuing filming despite the occurrence of a serious accident''. Okumura was the eldest son of Katsu, and this film was his film debut.

He didn't cheat ...they bet on the house dice outside the cup ........thats cheating ..there greedy got the best of them.........the point is to bet on the dice inside the cup. And zatoichi hears the sound of the dice rolls.......

He let his dice rolled outside of the cup. While the real dice (the ones they were supposed to be betting on) were still in the cup. The purpose of the game is to bet odds or even btw.

Then on the second spin he did it again only this time he let his own dice fall out with the real dice still in the cup. They betted on the unofficial dices and lost. He can hear how the dices fall because he has an unusually heightened sense of hearing. He knows when they're even or odds and wins everytime.

Holy Cow... for once Zatoichi entered a crooked dice game and didn't have to eventually end up slicing half the yakuza there.
勝新最後の「座頭市」で時代劇の傑作のひとつだ。勝新の集大成と言ってもいい。だけどこの映画の唯一の欠点は見せ場が多すぎることだ。勝新のこれまでの座頭市のすべてを詰め込んで見せ場ばっかりになってる。だから一つの映画としての完成度はあまり高くない。だけど何度も見たし、何度見ても面白い。
The film does seem like an homage to all of his past moments.

これは昔からシリーズを見てる人にはお馴染みのシーンなんだけど、細かいことに賭場のヤクザに勝負持ちかけてサイコロが外に出る時に「一の目」が画面に映るようにしてるんだよね。まあ、説明してた「一の目が五の字」ってのが映ってないから分かりにくいけど。
未だにこのシーン分からんのです。
壺からサイコロは飛び出して、目は決まってた。
ヤクザ共はそれに賭けた。
なのに、結果は逆で市の一人勝ち(；￣Д￣）？

市は映画的な能力ですが「壺振りで自由に出目を出せる」という風になってまして、壺の中は「丁」にして外に出たのは「半」にしてるんです。
最初に胴を取った時に鶴太郎さんが「市っあん」って言うのを叩いて静止したのは「市はサイコロが壺から出ている事は分かっている」というのを見せているんです。でも、大きな動作で見せない事でヤクザ連中に「こいつはサイコロが壺から出てることに気づいて無いな」と思わせる。
その後、五右衛門一家のヤクザ連中に勝負を仕掛けてさきにやったようにサイコロを外に出すんですけど、実は「五右衛門一家のサイコロ」は壺の中にあって、外に出たサイコロは市の袖から落ちたもの。という事なんです。
最初に五右衛門一家のサイコロの説明をしているのはフリになってるんです。

ちなみに2:43あたりをよく見ると壺の周りを手探りしてるのがわかります。そこで外に出たサイコロを拾って袂にしまっています。
