  • We road trip... a lot. And we prefer to freedom camp whenever possible. And since our road trip vehicle is a Prius, we had to get creative. That's when we decided to build a platform for not only sleeping but to store our gear. See more details on the entire build on our website:

I built out a 2003 explorer for camping and lived happily for six months. I then rented an apartment and realized i was so much happier and focused on my art projects while i lived off the grid. So i bought a 2000 honda odyssey which i am currently building out now. Btw Great build and personality

I enjoyed your video. It is possible for a 6 foot 3 inch person to sleep in a Prius stretched out. The front seat needs to be flipped all the way up, and then pushed all the way forward. When everyone looks at a Prius from the outside it looks like only a short 4 foot person could fit in sleeping position. But when you get in there and move the seats , it is amazing! So 2 people could also sleep in there that are tall, but then where do you put all the gear and food for the night? If you are light on gear it is possible. Otherwise, as you show, You need to create more storage space. Good one!

Prius camping works very well for tall people! I am 5'9" and have plenty of room as long as the front seat is pulled forward completely :-) Nice video!

You can also leave a Prius on standby for perfect climate control all night. The engine will just kick on occasionally to keep the battery charged and it only uses 1/2 a gallon of gas or less. Regardless of temp setting, if ac feature is on it will also help prevent condensation.

My platform didn't allow for sitting up in bed. Took the legs off. Then just removed it altogether. Back to square 1, rebuilding the cupboard and permanent bed area. Thx 4 your help. 🎁

You can leave your Prius on as long as you want. New York cab companies only turn theirs off to do oil changes and tire rotation. Besides those times, their entire fleet of Prius never get turned off. Pretty amazing engineering.

You can hang the head part of the bed from the seats (headrest posts) with paracord. That way you don’t need a 2x4 support.

You need to watch Nikki Delventhal’s channel. She removed her seats and built a platform.

Lay the front passenger seat back all the way. Then you have 7 feet plus for tall people. So any height person can sleep in a Prius!

My Prius Prime can't lay back the front seats.

Nice video and fun to watch, thanks. I’m watching a bunch and grabbing ideas from them all. 2 suggestions come to mind as possible improvements (you asked...heh). 1) A piano hinge to replace the 3 hinges would be far lower profile, distribute stress over a larger area...comfort and safety. 2) If the “headrests” hinged down rather than up, they would never really be in the way once that larger flap is closed...and it could pretty much always be closed flat then.
Also I’m a bit...thicker...than you (and prob Josh), so mine will probably need to be lower if not flat on the existing bed...although I like the under bed storage idea a lot. Thanks again!
