With its striking coral exterior, sky bridges and views from all four sides, Architect Ben Ellul's apartment in the heritage listed Caringal Flats is a unique part of the suburban Melbourne skyline. Where possible Ben retained and restored all the apartment’s heritage details, maintaining white and textured surfaces but adding a series of sleek black contemporary joinery throughout. Inspired by the apartment's views and abundance of natural light, Ben removed the internal walls originally closing off the bedroom, kitchen and entryway, adding a freestanding double sided storage unit that divides the bedroom from the living room. The bathroom and laundry are cleverly concealed by a series of doors leading to the bedroom and low custom made furniture throughout maximises the apartment’s functionality and access to views. A thoughtfully designed space that preserves the apartment’s aesthetic appeal, Ben’s home is functional first and foremost with a beautiful minimalist touch.

One flat per floor and an in-apartment elevator?? The dream!!!
Maintenance and breakdown management will be a pain though. =|
Strata fees on a personal lift would be huge
Makes moving in or out a breeze!
@@wilmaknickersfit I'm sure there's a service contract of sorts, but definitely still a pain if it breaks down!
It's the external stairs that I love.
That asus ad right in the middle was really jarring, did not expect that!
Very nicely done, although the relatively big size makes it much easier to turn this apartment in a very liveable space.
What an amazing building. And to be still standing today is remarkable. The apartment has so much natural light. Whilst black would not have been my choice of colour everything blends in well.
I love the idea of having light on all four sides! But I'm not convinced about taking down the walls between the bedroom, living room, and kitchen. What if someone wants privacy or to take a phone call? Sound travels. I also don't like how you need to open two doors, including a big one, to get to the fridge. Also the laundry in the bedroom, wouldn't the noise be annoying if someone is sleeping. Just some odd details I wouldn't want to deal with. Love the look of the place.
Thought the same as you about the two doors to the fridge. I once stayed at a place that had that, and it was annoying.
I totally agree, particularly with the bedroom space. Open-floor plans are great but you need SOME kind of privacy
@@LottoLogistayou live with what you have. But it was designed for how they live, so those things don’t bother them. I wouldn’t like floating “walls”, but maybe they don’t have any secrets and the washing machine makes white noise. I wouldn’t say no to a flat in Toorak, Melbourne.
I hope the days of taking down walls to "open everything up" are soon to be over again. I heard that rooms are actually coming back and I second that. I was never a fan of open floor plans. I have friends with an open apartment and you never have one second of silence there
It's only the two of them living there - I guess they don't need too much privacy. They can do the laundry when nobody's sleeping.
So lovely. The base is wonderful to start, with such wonderful light from all directions. I’d get rid of that TV blocking the window in front of the sofa and opt for a projector/roll-up screen; that view is stunning.
Agreed! I am always surprised when people have the TV be the focal point. I haven't lived with a television for 14 years, I instead just watch on my laptop, and have considered a projector as well.
Yes!
Same! the view is so stunning, would prefer watch the view than the tv (but it's personnal)
@@Madame_reve um, no, that tv stand is a piece of art and u can still see the view behind it.
@@minigiant8998 oh you think? don't think it's a piece of art but it's personnal. I don't have tv so don't used to integrate it in a room. My choice with a view like that will be to only see the view, but it's not ma appartment ^^
It is a lovely apartament. It's interesting they kept the furniture low to not block the view of the city, but put a pretty big TV console smack in the middle of it 🤣
agree, a couple of positive comments about the TV but i would have liked to have seen something like a drop down screen, he or they are architects after all 😅❤
I love that they worked around the windows and made sure that they did not cover the view. And I love that they made the cabinets seem like they are floating by elevating them. Makes cleaning so much easier 😂
Finally!!! An apartment with a tv!!! It really bugs me that so many apartments featured on this channel never seem to have a tv or nice comfy couch.
@@nfdafds32423I tend to agree. Although I do live in a 50m2 apartment and have a modest tv and modest couch. To quote Joey Tribbiani “but what’s all your furniture pointed at?! “🤣😂🤣
less and less people own TVs
Most people probably don't want a tv to block their views.
Some people don't watch tv... we all have phones and laptops anyways
Who watches TV ?
I love this building. Years ago, when I worked late shift, I'd change my route home to go past this building. It's magical.
What a brilliant block of flats. That's how it should be done.
This is beautiful, what an incredible building. The lift grate! The aerial passageways! The view! I'm so glad the whole surrounding build is still standing and cared for.
I love that everything was kept low to the ground, it feels so spacious even though with all the storage there's actually quite a lot of stuff in there. I personally like all the black joinery, it really feels like it was embraced as a feature rather than being something to hide. And the entrance way cupboard with the special doggo room is so charming.
I don't think he even touched on the light on the swing arm in the living space and what looks like a winter garden rather than a balcony.
My only concerns are that the fridge cupboard door could be annoying though aesthetically lovely; and that if it's all the original glazing it's going to be a bit frosty in Melbourne in winter. Truly such a beautiful place though!
‘Functionality needs to come first’. Well said. Totally agree.
Hey! I'm in Melbourne right now! (for the first time). So far I've only been in the center, it's nice to see these cozier spots just outside.
Beautiful transformation❤. Minnie is adorable❤❤❤
Vinnie's bedroom ❤ Great apartment, what a light! And view!
I LOVE how the flat is flooded with natural light!!!!! Lifting the cabinetry off the floor truly helped keep an airy feel. It's nice to see they love the fur baby like family. Having his own private area but up on the couch with cuddles.
I like the fact that even the old design was still beautiful.
to me this is one of the most appealing places i've seen on this channel so far, and there's been so many really good ones.
We will always support this channel no matter what. They're incredible at what they do.
Wow, all of this in just 58sqm. The building itself is beautiful, I like everything of it (colours, materials) and even the furniture legs make perfectly sense
Yes, beautiful. But sizewise it depends: 58sqm for 2 isn't small at all from my European perspective and after a few years in NYC.
@@Eunegin23 yup I agree that 58 sqm isn't that small (european here too). Compared to the 54 sqm place I'm about to leave though I can't help noticing how the right planimetry and furniture choice can really make the difference.
im suprised that for 58sqm and only one bedroom this doesnt feel that spacious, I live in a 63 sqm 2 bedroom apartment, of which 4-5 is a balcony and it feels way more spacios than this, especially the bathroom and the kitchen
🤯 Absolutely amazing! Also terrific that it's back to original exterior colors! "Back to the Future" in the best possible way! 👏😎✌️
The tv unit fits so well into the whole aesthetic which is rare
i have long wished i could live in this building back from when I found out an associate at my very first job lived here
I love home tours that just relaxes me and the beautiful doggie 🩶
i love the concept and configurations of the flat. the only thing i wasn't fond of was the black, as i felt a lighter color would have enhanced the beautiful light and space and openness of the apartment. the kitchen table/work table seemed a bit *board roomish* to me, but that's personal preference though.all in all a lovingly restored space. what a dream to have the entire floor - well done!
Agreed! I felt either white, or wooden tones would’ve even a much softer and appropriate feel.
Yes, I kept thinking I loved it except for the black - but they clearly love it, and it wouldn't be the most difficult aspect to change if they ever decide they want a refresh.
Totally agree!
Ah but the black was what brought it together in my opinion. I mean , I get it.
Love it all but the TV. With a view like this, I would not obstruct it.
This place is gigantic relative to other never too small places featured
Beautiful apartment. Even the dog is small!!!
I really enjoy looking at minimalist homes where you can maximize your lifestyle not just your house style. 💯
This was actually beautiful everything flows beautifully I love how you didn't just randomly chuck in some Eames chairs everywhere and actually designed the place
lovely dog & beautiful scenery 😊
Lovely flat. Also, as a Swede I was glad to see a Sigurd Lewerentz book laying on one of the shelves. I live next to the Woodland Cemetery in Stockholm, and often see his work on my walks there. Not least the Chapel of Resurrection, completed in 1925.
Oh I love this apartment so much. The fact there's only one apartment per floor, the aspect and view, and the light! Very clever, thoughtful and intentional restoration and design structurally and with elements that enhance the lives of those who live within. Gorgeous.
one of my favourites..love the design language throughout..sky bridges look amazing in this unique setting
Beautiful space. The light is incredible..and you have managed to make the space feel quite large. Best part...the windows 💙💙
perfection! ...AND the Lift & outside stairs & connecting aerial walkways.. Fabulous. LOVE that this original building is still standing and being used so beautifully.
This video showcases an inspiring restoration of a modernist apartment in Melbourne. With just 58sqm, the architect has skillfully revived the space, blending contemporary elements with the apartment's original character. It's a testament to thoughtful design and preservation, resulting in a stylish and functional living environment.
Nice air-conditioner idea. No spoiling of the interior.
An absolutely inspiring space. I like that you mentioned the lands of the Wurundjeri people.
Very well designed. It made the space looks much bigger than it is.
Always interested in seeing how others living in small spaces store and display their libraries.
this apartment has a lot of nice details. and color palette is nice. it's my style
Wonderful space, exactly how an apartment should be with lots of workable, considered storage and everything having a place, the only add on I would have is a bath, can't live without mine!
What a fun and unique building! It would be a very happy space to live in.
Lots of great ideas, amazing building. Omg acres of natural light, panoramic views & sky bridges, my language! 🥰
This is probably my most favorite to date. I'd give my eye teeth to own one of those uber cool apartments.
Same, this is probably one of my favorites!
Lovely flat with beautiful views. I think the dark cabinets would get me down after a while and I would miss having a proper bedroom especially - but my favourite in a while. 👏
Love the minimal simplicity. ive always wondered how folk manage to keep finger marks from dark matt finishes as featured on many of the units here
Cleaning, and washing hands
Beautiful intervention
What an apartment! Exactly my likings and style, just love it!
Stunning. The building, the apartment, the view, the lift. Adapted to a gorgeous home.
so basically an ASUS commercial. Nice
I love everything about this. The building, the furniture, THE LIGHTING?!?!
What an amazing style building. I love how architects have the ability to look at the whole space and consider everything, I really love what they have done with this space. Thanks NTS! 💖💖💖
The living room looks like an office and the bedroom reminds me of changing rooms in a public bath..
Also I'm not sure putting a huge black shelf in the middle is a very innovative use of space. And it makes the room appear much smaller than it is 🙈
but of course I know that this made especially for their needs and this is what matters. 😊
What an absolute ripper! Well done!
One of the best utilisation of space designs, fits so we I to the architecture of the building 🏝🥰 Love it
This is one of the best small spaces I've seen here on this channel. Brilliant!
Why does the mention of the Asus monitor in the video seem like a deliberate advertisement? Hmmm
& they made a point of moving it from the table to the bedroom 🙄
The building looks very unique. The apartment, in my opinion, looks like an office space and doesn't feel like home. Now my cup of tea.
Thats one funky looking building
I think this is the best design I have seen for quite some time 😊
Remarkable! well thought out changes to suit their needs, including thinking of possible alternative uses of furnishings. Very sleek and elegant. Lucky for them to live in such a classy place!
I would have chosen a lighter colour (of wood) for the massive furniture, but it is a matter of taste. I would also want a proper door separating bedroom from living room. I might have opted for a screen and projector instead of a stand TV.
Very nice. One of the best on this channel :)
Love the pink chair in the bedroom.
❤Wow! A beautiful apartment in a wonderful building. 👌
This space is perfect. I would change nothing if I lived here. It's airy and open while still providing privacy, the kitchen is partially enclosed so the smell won't travel so far, the storage is ample, and the furniture choices are lovely. This is a really beautiful apartment, and still so practical!
This looks so spacious!!
This one is now my favorite.
Absolutely amazing 👏 😍
Such a amazing apartment! Love the design! Vinnie is so cute :)
Fabulous! I love all your design choices (tho I'd have more white in the kitchen... a minor detail). I agree re having your own washing machine. Simplified, lightsome and brilliant. Every success to you, Mr. Ellul. G Ire
Calm and clean soft and cozy functional and minimal LOVE IT 😍
You had me at Italian Greyhound ❤
What a lovely zen place to reside in.
Beautiful simple very minimalist apartment - great work!
❤ “Design shouldn’t dictate they way we live, it should enhance it.” OH, I love 🥰 that so much 😊😊😊🤯
Amazing space!
Just the building itself is a dream.
Marvellous thanks for sharing ❤ beautiful doggy 😍🥰🥰
My gos, this is insne. SO MUCH GLASS! SO BEAUTIFUL! And he faves the sofa to the glass! As it shoumd be. A whole floor flat!? Absolutely insane!
what a beautiful and unique project.
So elegant, peaceful, and efficient! Ever modern apartment should designed this way, and every restored apartment should be restored this way! My place is 200 square feet larger, but seems so much smaller!
The flat is huuuuuge!
Amazing building and great design. Love how commenters are both inspired and critical, but this works for the couple and their dog.
Absolutely love this renovation/restoration. What a beautiful apartment full of light and breeze. As an aussie I feel a deep connection to the green of the dining table and love the idea of using it for that piece of furniture. The benches are very inspired. We have similar stools that function as side tables or seats and they're fantastic.
Beautiful. I appreciate the little touches that reference the original building and the period. It is an excellent example of preserving and updating existing housing stock. Thank you.
Great layout, lots of natural light, and the views are amazing! And I just love the clever way the tv is housed.
ohh hes a shy doggo 🐶🐶
congratulations on making your small space feel and look like a much larger home - love love love what you have achieved with your renovation- thank you for sharing 😍
Very nicely designed. ❤
I lOVE the concept but really hate the TV being there! It just looks like a big black box blocking the view! Sorry to sound so negative. It truly is a beautiful building and a inspirational design. I love how the bedroom and living room are one space - cross flow of breeze is so important. Really clever use of bathroom space and it all ties in togehter ! :)
Agree 100%
yea kinda shows that they prefer tv over nature
@@carnifaxx ingenious! lol!
Really love your recent videos, simple, makes sense and realistic. This one too.
out of all the NTS videos I've seen, this one speaks to me. I love everything about it and aspire to have a home like this one day
To begin with, the building is iconic in a true sense - nothing like the box-like buildings we have today. The ipen bottom joinery separating the bedroom is understandable, lets the light, aur, and the dog in :) love the dog entry detail. The only thing I'd change if it was my space would be to remove the TV. Wouldn't trade that view for another screen
One of my favorite NTS apartments. Fantastic remodel.
I am in love with this apartment. Colors and light and layout and add to that the nature of the building itself and I am extremely jealous of their good taste and the apartment that contains it. Makes me want to hire this guy to design my house (in 20 years! lol)
The only things I would change is less of his benches everywhere and different hinges for the cabinets and doors. The opening the fridge cabinet and then the fridge door would drive me crazy! I've always needed a glass fridge door to stare at my food in a daze combining ingredients in my head. My current fridge beeps at me when I do this... but I digress. Fav NTS apartment yet, I think. Good job
What a stunning cool apartment - one of my favourites so far. Absolutely love it 😍
Haha, every guy: I’m XYZ, founder of XYZ architects.
Bro, you’re running a one man business, not a Fortune 500 company!😂😂😂
