Tiny Origami apartment in Manhattan unfolds into 4 rooms

- In 2005, third-grade-teacher Eric Schneider bought as big as an apartment as he could afford in Manhattan. He paid $235,000 for a 450-square-foot studio with a tiny kitchen.
Then he let architects Michael Chen and Kari Anderson of Normal Projects design a way to pack more density into his small space.
In order to fit more apartment in a small footprint, they created an object that's bigger than furniture, but smaller than architecture and that morphs with the changing activities of a day.
It's a large, blue, oversized cabinet that houses all of the walls/bed/tables/shelving/closets needed for at least 4 full-sized rooms.
By continuing to unfold, or fold differently, Schneider can create a bedroom with accompanying built-in nightstand and closets, but an office plus library, a guest bedroom, and a living room. Or close it up entirely and simply flip down the small bar and the room becomes entertaining space for a dozen.
The Normal Projects architects called their creation the Unfolding Apartment, though given Schneider's affinity for the Japanese sense of space (he spent his first year post-college living and teaching in Japan), it could as easily be called the Origami Apartment.
In total, Schneider spent $70,000 total remodeling his new apartment and this includes not just the cabinet, but the bathroom renovation, all cabinetry, kitchen appliances, furniture and dishes.
In this video, Chen shows us his custom cabinet of rooms and Schneider unfolds a few of his favorite configurations: his bedroom (& closet/changing room), office (& library), guest bedroom, kitchen, dining bar, living room and lounge.

I think that's the initial idea. He wants the living area to be window-lit but the entrance is behind the kitchen. That leaves the middle of the room for sleeping area but he definitely doesn't want the guest to be greeted with a bed before the living area.
I would probably be to lazy to even do the bed and permanently end on the "guest" sofa ;)
Same, except i'd probably always sleep on a couch. As I always opt for a transformer stuff (let's say washed/dryer combo; food processor), i ALWAYS use just one position. That bed would either permanently be down or up.
I have a murphy bed in the room I sleep in. I have never been big on making my bed, but I do make this bed almost every day and put it up into the wall. The payoff is lots of floor space to do yoga and other exercise.
Very interesting, but I wish these videos would show the bathrooms. There was so much time at the end that really doubledand tripled over scenes that we saw already

I don't like these tiny apartments, but this one I do. it helps that there are ALOT of windows. Most of these tiny apts only have one small window. I actually am quite impressed with this one.

I don't understand why people who live in tiny spaces always seem to think we will be surprised when they pull the bed out of the wall. Where else do they think we would expect it to be?

I love this apartment so much. Especially all those windows in the living room that lend a ton of natural lighting. You could totally have a micro-garden in the window sills too!

Brandon Wu I totally agree. It would be tough to live there, but worth it to be in Manhattan. The creativity is really somethine else, though. I am surprised they were allowed to lease (unless they own) and make so many creative adjustements.

The bathroom is out in the hallway! Most tiny apartments have to share a bathroom with a couple other tenants! I saw that on another tiny apartment video!! I was like WOW, I could handle the small space but I would DIE if I had to share a bathroom with strangers!!!! I'm a germ freak!!
It looks like the bathroom is behind the kitchen up by the front door. There appears to be space there, but for some reason they didn't show it or even mention that it is there. I agree....there is no way I would be sharing a bathroom with strangers...yuck!
That would be the most challenging part...I agree. I'm not really a germaphobe per se, but what if you're taking a little extra time in the bathroom for hygiene or maintenance...like shaving your legs or dying your hair, and one of your 4 other bathroom mates bursts in...or what if one of them is a pervert, or gets the flue? Covid 19?? God forbid, but that could be a real nightmare!
I think it's absolutely outrageous that these slumlords aren't put in check. They pay dearly for these spaces. I just can't believe that the law doesn't mandate that each apt has to have its own bathroom. It should be mandatory!

I am a large space person, but I am seeing the necessity of living more minimally for many reasons as humanity moves into the future. It makes so much sense. This space is especially pleasant.

Ya know, I think giving a person 400ft or less can be a bit sucky. Like yea they figured it out but ppl need a lot of money to redo these spaces and the spaces that are already curated like this , cost a lot to rent. The idea is beautiful but I feel like landlords would unfortunately take advantage and just continue to make these costly

Or here's an idea .... don't be single. We're not designed to live alone. It makes us weird and scratchy. We're social mammals, designed to live in family groups. Don't work against your own nature. Get married. Have kids. Stay married. Have grandkids. Live together in one home. A home with the sound of laughter and busy-ness and human warmth. A home with dogs, and a big garden. Plus, think how much happier and safer you'll be in a pandemic 😷😜

This is such a beautiful place. It doesn't have a tiny feeling at all- the clean design, all the natural light and higher ceilings make it look so spacious. I would love a place like this in NYC!
I LOVE this place too! I would use a lighter neutral colour like beige for the cabinets though. Dark colours make the tiny place look more cramped and oppressive Living On Leisure

I do agree. I have even smaller apartment but in there I have full kitchen with eating area, living room, bedroom and bathroom (all of these are not tiny and are separate with walls and doors). So I think they could do better with this living area.

REALLY? I think his setup is great. As mentioned, if they'd put up walls, it would have cut down on available space. Taking the route they did made full use of the space available, and it really works out well. My only complaint is I'd have put the microwave somewhere else.
My apartament looks better and more specious than this even though I have walls. Just saying. I do not like this setup and seen better.

They try to make it seem like how great it is out where they are, but they don't realize that no one gives a damn and there's a reason why a "10 BR mansion" costs so little out in the middle of nowhere. +Eric Lee There are pluses and minuses to everything. I lived in a small town for 20 years in a 19th c. farmhouse. The thing is, people came shortly after the house was built and founded a town around it. Everything was in walking distance - library, art gallery and school, high end shops and lower end shops, grocery store, hardware store, bookstore, the bay, foreign film club, lots of restaurants and bars, and Mardi Gras parades and a huge arts and crafts festival. My fairly large house was under 50K with a large diningroom and a 40ft long front porch. We had so many parties! The front porch made a great dance floor on a Spring or Summer evening. Our tiny sailboat was docked only a mile away. And safe! Our dd could walk to town by herself and would often stop by the police station to pet the dogs. We had season tickets for the symphony which was only a 40 minute drive to the nearest big city. Granted, it wasn't NYC, but it had its amenities.

I don't disagree with you that there are positives and negatives to every situation. It really boils down to personal preference. Honestly if I had a choice between a small town or NYC.. I wouldn't take either. I've been to many small towns and they're just too isolated and or secluded for me(I get lonely and need people lol). I live in downtown LA right now and I hate hate hate hate it for various reasons. If I had a choice then i'd like to live somewhere in between like a suburban area, but that won't be for a few years or so.
+Crab Bisk "stuff in Manhattan" is subjective term...better to live in a nice place where you will spend the majority of your time rather than live in a tiny box just because its in Manhattan and there is lots to "do there". You may not really do much of anything in Manhattan.
dargay Yes, I agree with you, hence why New Yorkers spend the majority of their time in a nice place called NYC and not in their boring homes. People LIVE in the city and just sleep in their tiny boxes. I don't understand the "you may not do much of anything in Manhattan" part? great apartment, but I feel like the dark color of that big box makes it seem kinda small. Perhaps if the blue was painted a light color or white it wouldn't look like a big blue box in a tiny white room. It would look more in-sync with everything.

It's hideous and doesn't suit the style of the windows. This looks like a nice neo Georgian house in west London and they've ruined it by putting an oversized dark metal box in the middle. I applaud the utilitarian design though.

I love how carefully they have considered the use of everything while still really "living" in the space (the informal recycling storage or the linen shelf, for example). Sometimes, videos like this feature miraculous transformation objects that seem like they are on display only. I have plain Ikea shelves in my living room/dining room space, and as I continue to live here, I'm going to think about what I could devise to make better use of the space. The same thing for my small bedroom, which I'm converting to an office. With about 900 sq feet, I think I could really make some cool improvements while keeping a sense of spaciousness. Thank you!

Why the need to be rude when someone asks a question. If you have nothing nice to say don't say anything, my grandmother taught me that just as I was taught if you want things done right do it yourself. So you can never complain. This is a great price I'd say very cheap for Manhattan. You can't even buy a studio in Hawaii for this price, you'd only be able to get a 1 bedroom condo for minimum 400+ K.

The bath has to be behind the stove wall. A very long slender room with sink and toilet on one side of skinny room, with shower at end. This is crazy that they didn't show it. People want to know, **** it!
It was a very conventional looking bathroom so I didn't film it. Since then I try to even film the more conventional stuff or people's imaginations run wild :)

I live in a studio in Brooklyn and it's really quite big. I liked when you said, bringing things in just because you want them or just because you can have them. I cannot do stuff like you guys because I'm pretty poor. I love my studio and that's all I need. A brand new roof over my head with, believe it or not, a full kitchen. Less to clean and it keeps me safe. Great video. I'm a little envious but in a good way.💞

That bulky cabinet with less capacity to hold things. I thought it's a poor use of space. I've seen smaller studios that has more storage space and full size fridge and more counter space in the kitchen.
When the bed is up, the area is practically useless. And the cabinet doesn't look nice either, a big dark thing in the middle of a long apartment.

Excellent job and it makes perfect sense, primarily for a single person. You can only be in one room at a time anyway, so why not just have a single, comfortable room and have the ability for the space to serve multiple purposes? 95% of the time we are either sleeping, working at our desks, sitting on our couch or eating in one single room anyway. It's not like we constantly need to be walking between multiple rooms all the time, and even if you needed to feel that way, you can just leave your apartment and walk around the block for a bit then come back to reset your orientation to your space.
I agree and think this is a great place for a single person with space for occasional guests. Love it!

now is 2019, at Hong Kong, they are selling 150 square foot nano apartment there at about half million USD. FUN!
That apt is a half million today and up. the price mentioned was the purchase price in 2005. Additionally, expect a monthly maintenance fee of between 1700 - 2000 per month. I live in the adjoining neighborhood , Hells Kitchen.
There are a number of things I like about how this flat is laid out. The lack of separation between the kitchen and the sleeping space would be a deal breaker for me. Background info on the two gents and how this space fits their work and home lives would have been great. They seem to imply that Eric works form home (as a school teacher?) His unnamed other half narrated a section at the end that showed a number of spaces the "we" worked on. Is he an architect? Context would have made this episode more coherent.

I really like. Most custom small space are colorless and too minimalist. This studio has caracters, airy and lot of natural light. Very cozy!
This is a pretty civilized small apartment. The corner windows are the key. He'll have no problem selling it when he's ready to move on and if he ends up there for the rest of his life, it's still pretty livable.

With so many big, beautiful windows, why would you choose to sit at a desk facing AWAY from them? Natural light is healthy and makes you more productive! And the sun wouldn't be shining on the laptop screen either.

This is very well done. Very optimized yet realistically usable. It's nice to see a kitchen where you can do normal cooking. Japanese and South Korean design/storage is excellent. They have ideas and things we just aren't adapting fast enough.

Yes an no. The cabinets take up space, but, it adds more furniture to it with more uses. So it's like getting two, really 4, in one. The space lost is gained because of how multi-functional it is.

2005 prices. An apt currently that size in that location would be around 500,000 and up with a monthly maintenance of at least 1700-2200 per month.

When I saw this video a year or so ago, I hated it. Now I really like it. A nice apartment to begin with with high ceilings and lots of windows and prewar details. I think it is a wonderfully designed space where you can live and also invite company over without your personal items getting in the way.

I saw a 20th anniversary screening of The Fifth Element last night and Bruce Willis' apartment in that film used a fair number of these transforming ideas! But their bed doesn't automatically clean and shrink-wrap itself every day, I see...

I ve had a small apartment like that before. I could walk most places. it wasn't too bad
Nothing looks comfortable to sit and relax on in this apt.
Everything feels so upright. It may look good but being home is about being in comfort.
Some days the idea of just dropping into bed is so compelling that I can't imagine a space where I'd need to continually reconfigure it
It didn't look that hard and if you were living on your own, you'd probably leave it down and only put it up when entertaining.

Living in London, I thought my house was small.... it looks incredible, but you would need to be so disciplined. Also, what’s the noise form the neighbours like in such housing density?

omg. this is totally awesome!!! I live in a small space by choice (400sqft) and I really think living small makes so much sense environmentally and you quickly start buying only items that you NEED and that are beautifully and thoughtfully designed. The amount of useless, meaningless STUFF we all have and continue to collect is sad. This video should be an inspiration to all!!!

I will say, if the apartment doesn't have bathroom, it isn't worth 1/15 of the price.
There is a bathroom. It was just too conventional so I didn't bother showing it. I hadn't anticipated that many people need to see things to believe they exist.

I wondered if the bathroom was in the apartment or if it was in the hallway and shared with other tenants. I'd like to think 235k gets you your own bathroom in the unit but it is NYC....

I think the point some people are making is that in NYC, small apartments sometimes have to share a bathroom with their neighbors, and the video makes it seem there is no bathroom in this apartment. Even a brief mention along the lines of "and around this corner is the bathroom" could have covered that, still without actually showing it.

I am so extremely impressed. This is giving so much living space to such a small apartment.
There's only one thing I would change and that is the coloring. I would make the closet off white, and the kitchen table of wood, more after my taste.
But THIS is how a tiny apartment would work for me too. One invests up front, but gets so much living quality back for it. WELL DONE ! Exemplary well done!

This is SO cool. I live in Honolulu, Hawaii and apartment space is at a premium. I really like all these modifications and how it maximizes every single piece of the apartment.

Personally speaking, I would’ve changed my floor to white marble or something that looks expensive and instead of that dark blue color, I would’ve chosen maybe white. Overall, this is a genius idea!,
