  • Maserati Ghibli Oil Pump Tear Down. Is it really prone to failure?
In this video I dissassemble an Oil Pump from a Maserati Ghibli to look at it's internal design and try determine if it is prone to failure by design or by negligence.

!!!!Car Photos for end of video feature!!!!
If you want me to feature your car at the end of my next video, send a few of the best photos of your car, your name, model, year, city and/or state and mods you haved installed to jamesdiy@GMail.com. Keep it short tho. I will do a feature at the end of my next video. I will reply to your email when I recieve it, and then again when the video your car will be featured in is close to being posted.
I am not a certified Maserati Technician. I am just a backyard mechanic with enough confidence in my skills and having done the necessary research to perform regular maintenance and repairs on my 2014 Maserati Ghibli SQ4 myself and post the videos on youtube. With the exception of engine oil changes, I had never before performed any the services or repairs on a Maserati Ghibli SQ4 you see in my videos until then. It was my first time. If I seem like I am trying to look like an expert, it is wholy unintentional because I admit I am not.

I have a theory here. As we know the rod bearings are a weak point in this engine. Prolonged oil change interval -> rod bearing wears off -> large gap causes low oil pressure -> metal pieces in the oil from the bearing -> oil pump fault. I would change the oil in every 5K Miles, and the rod bearings as preventive maintenance. In every 60-100k miles I would renew the oil pump and the timing chains.

I have 99K miles on mine, oil pressure is good. I do change oil every 5K to 6K miles, but to change the Rod bearings and oil pump and timing chains just as preventive maintenance is Ludacris. There are sensors that can alert you to timing chain issues. Oil pump can only fail if large enough debris gets run thru it enough. Regular oil / filter changes can prevent or minimize that risk.

Great video James. Did you know the year and mileage of the car the pump came from? I have only read there were updates on I believe the 2016 models. So I also wonder if that is both true and what was "updated". But you are absolutely correct, most failed pumps have been accompanied with a preceding issue on the car. Oil contamination, wrong oil, low oil (leading to stuck bearing particles), continuing the horrible FCA/Stellantis intervals (of 12.5K Miles) overfilled oil, bad oil sensor etc. Which can happen to any car, it just so happens if the pump goes the Engine goes as fast as seconds after. Dealers and mechanics always blame the Oil pump and most likely due to the obvious reason it doesn't turn manually. Thank you as always!

The guy said he could not remember the year of the car or the mileage. He said the engine was parted out because it was damaged. He did not say how it was damaged.

Exactly what i had expected. This pump is very similar or even the same as the Pentastar 3.6 liter one. Contamination by metal particles could be the problem, but then harm was done BEFORE the pump started failing. BTW: second high pressure state of the pump, by activating the solenoid, is NOT based on RPM alone, it is engine LOAD! Just try it yourself, watching the pressure meter when coasting at average speed in 7th gear, then apply a little throttle. You will see oil pressure rise to end of scale, while engine rpm hardly went up.

Thank you for the input. And thanks for watching.

And this is wrong working pomp or solenoid valve? When i ride on 7th gear and add some gas on pedal, after that oil pressure rise up to max its wrong or good?😅

I think the main issue is taking maserati at their word to service the oil at 12.5 Thousand Miles.
7 or 8 is probably as far as I'd like to take it, even at 9 quarts capacity.

5 to 6 k miles on oil changes. These engines..chains..etc are very sensitive to carbon in the oil..rule of thumb.. if the oil looks like honey it's ok..if not service it..
