  • You all know that finishing my projects is not my favorite thing. It’s not that I don’t love the way the project look afterwards, it just that I’m not the most patient man in the world and brushing on finishes is not one of my favorites. I’m also not a fan of buying a ton of spray cans as that get very expensive, very quickly. HomeRight sent me their Super Finish Max Extra HVLP Paint Sprayer to try out. They also sent me a couple paint shelters and the quick clean kit. In this video I show you the HomeRight Super Finish Max Extra HVLP Paint Sprayer and how it works. Spoiler alert, I like it, especially for the money. This is simply paint spraying made easy and affordable.

    Just bought this to spray a new front door and WOW is all that I can say, worked fantastic. I own several HVLP (ones to spray automobiles) and an airless. Wife chose a very dark blue color and we decided to use SW Emerald Urethane trim that is thick! I originally was going to use my primer HVLP but would have thin past 10% to give the atomization that I wanted and lightened the blue so been wanting something like this to bridge the gap of my sprayers (airless creates way too much overspray). Sprayed the first coat straight out of the can, worked great but just made me nervous because I wasn't getting the spray conditions that make me happy even though it leveled off really nice. Additional coats I added less 5% water and wow just wow did this thing spray fantastic and leave an amazing finish! Best $79 I ever spent and going to spray my shutters next with it. Cleanup wasn’t that bad and if you are new to spraying buy extra paint and get ready to play with settings to get you your ideal condition, I Highly recommend this sprayer!

    Nice! The paint was new, so probably no contaminants, but they have those paint filters when pouring in your finishes to the container. They may have disposable liners for the container for easier cleanup. I'd be interested in your future use and durability as I've been thinking of getting one to paint about 7-8 doors. Nice though!

    • @BronkBuilt
      @BronkBuilt  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've already done a small part of my closet and I did not have fun brushing on the finish. I've got several cabinets for the closet to do and I'm really looking forward to using the sprayer. It's going to save me hours. I do have some of those disposable paint filters and tried it with the red paint. It was taking forever for it to go through so I gave up on it. The paint was new so no issues. I'll let you know how it does but so far I like it. Can't say how it will compare with the several hundred dollar models but for $99 I like it.

    • @BronkBuilt
      @BronkBuilt  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would not. You would be stopping to fill it way to much. I just don't think it is made for that. I'm not sure which to use but I'd look for one with a tube that goes to sprayer from a bucket on paint. So you could spray a gallon or 5 gallon bucket so you are not refilling so much.

    Hi Dale, I am using an oil base lacquer with this gun and its amazing on how fast I can finish a project. BUT I am having a hard time cleaning off the remaining lacquer. What do you recommend I use to clean the lacquer and that is also safe to run it thru this gun to clean the inside of the sprayer? Thank you.

      I only use latex in mine. HomeRight says latex and oil is fine but they do recommend not using lacquer through this gun. I'm not totally sure why, I think they mentioned something like lacquer was flamible or something. Hi Dale, I am not trying to be a butt head here but......
    The new Super Finish Max does it all. From furniture and cabinets to fences and walls, this sprayer can cover a wider array of projects and coatings with less thinning and hassle. This High Volume, Low Pressure (HVLP) sprayer has a turbine motor, which means that an air compressor isn’t needed! The six available spray tip sizes (3 included) allow for ultimate customization of paint flow for all of your projects! The two different air caps allow for a wide or fine spray pattern and the volume control knob provides further customization of paint flow. The Super Finish Max is ideal for oil or water based materials such as: chalk type paint, milk paint, latex paints, enamels, primers, clear sealer, polyurethane, stain and varnish. 450 watts of power sprays thicker paints with less thinning! The newly-designed pickup tube and cup vent allow for quicker and easier clean-up. The built-in access door makes for easy inlet air filter changes and the large 39-ounce container capacity means less stopping to refill. Includes: Super Finish Max, container lid, cleaning brush, 4. 0 mm nozzle and tip (red), 2. 0 mm nozzle and tip (green), 1. 5 mm nozzle and tip (blue), wrench, wide spray pattern cap (yellow), fine spray pattern cap (black). . MATERIALS: Spray oil or water based materials: chalk and milk paint, latex paints, enamels, primers, clear sealer, polyurethane, stain and varnish.
    This above paragraph is from their amazon ad, the last sentence states that oil base is fine. Now, am I suppose to know from the above paragraph that oil based lacquer is not allowed? Am I missing something here? Thanks Dale.

      Please understand I am someone who knows I'm not good at finishing and still learning. With that said i would think this would just as good a job as the rattle and spray cans and would certainly be far less expensive on material. Using on a car, i wouldn't use either because i know i would not do a good job. If you think you could do a good job on a car with rattle and spray just take time with this sprayer to get the right flow of spray first and it should do as good a job. My guess is that HomeRight would not recommend on cars.

      Do you happen to remember the type of paint? I've used several types, including one from Home Depot's Behr collection that was quite thick and I have not had to thin anything yet. Now, please understand I am about the farthest from a finish expert so maybe I should have been thinning but everything I've sprayed I think came out fine. It will not compare with the multi-hundred dollar models but for the price I'm still pretty sold. Now if someone was to offer me one of those multi-hundred dollar units I'd certainly use it.

    You may not "need" to thin the paint, but the quality of the finish will mean an up to 10 - 25% addition of water to the paint to insure an even flow , and thicker paint lays down better for a smoother look when dry.

      Thanks for the comment, always appreciate advice. I'm far from expert on finishing so I do appreciate it. Next time I paint I'll try thinning it a bit but the finish it leaves is pretty darn good, at least for me. I mostly spray poly finishes but will certainly try this.

    Have you had any issues with the paint sprayer spraying out a weird, grainy look texture? Or does it seem to have a nice smooth finish?

    • @BronkBuilt
      @BronkBuilt  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      This was the first time I've ever used a sprayer so to be honest yes. But it was because i didn't have the flow dialed in correctly. One i practiced a bit, literally only 5 to 10 minutes i was able to dial in proper flow and eliminated it. Also, using the correct tip for the material you are spraying makes a difference. I'm certainly not a pro so it takes me a bit more time to dial in the correct flow than others using same sprayer but i can say the result is always far superior to my brushed finishes. And mitch faster. For the price of this sprayer i am very happy with it.

    Thanks for the video. I am really surprised that you do not need to thin your paint down, especially Sherwin Williams! I've used Sherwin Williams on all of my projects from kitchen cabinets, to craft furniture and in every case I have had to thin my paint before using. I have used extreme block primer to classic pro. What is your secret to NOT thinning???

    • @BronkBuilt
      @BronkBuilt  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't really have a secret. I've used about 5 or 6 different types of paint and never thinned it. Maybe to the eye of someone that is very versed in finishing they can tell the difference, but as far as I can tell mine come out very smooth. I actually have a harder time with thinner media like poly. I have to turn the output way down, even with using the finer needle. Do you have the exact same one as I do? I know they have a couple different versions with pretty similar names.

    • @FrancisSiuChock

      @@BronkBuilt Thanks for the response! I have the exact same model and really like the ease of use vs. the value for you get in the Max model. I see the atomizing of how the outer edge of the spay is "heavy" when I don't thin the paint or primer which is why I'm really surprised that you are lucky or better at using the max model. My first project was painting my kitchen cabinets and I tested one panel with and without thinning using Sherwin Williams and boy, could you see the difference if you didn't thin. Very orange peel in the finish result. Guess a big factor is the area you area you are painting such as my cabinets. Any way keep on painting!

      @@FrancisSiuChock Do you spray latex or oil based paint? What do you thin with and at what amount? Maybe I'll try it as it is possible that maybe I just don't know what a real good finish is.

    • @FrancisSiuChock
      @FrancisSiuChock 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@BronkBuilt Hey again! I use pretty much only latex, depending on the item I am painting that will determine the specific paint. I pretty much use Sherwin Williams paint exclusively after getting terrible results with "cheaper" brands (ie. HD Behr). Really, paying extra for paint is really worth it in the long run having learned the hard way. I use regular tap water or floetrol depending on what I'm painting. The amount if thinning is a lot of testing but no more than 15% dilution from my experience. I think the really big factor is the amount of surface area you are painting. If the area is small then you really can't see or notice the unevenness of the finish. The bigger the area like cabinets is when you really see the difference! Also, I the gloss of the paint is a huge factor. We painted our kitchen cabinets with gloss (Boss' decision) and you can see the "minor" imperfections. Overall they look great but I bet if we used a semi-gloss finish that the results would be better. Stay well my friend!

    • @BronkBuilt

      This sprayer has a small air pump built in. I love this sprayer. I use it to spray both latex paint and my poly finish. I've not used it to spray stain yet, but it will. For around $100, maybe less, it's a great sprayer. Maybe not as good as some of those expensive sprayers but for me it is great.

It adds better flow and pattern control and ability to spray laquer. Still lower cost than many

    Ok let me add to this. Depending* on the paint you are using you might need to thin it down. I've sprayed 4 different paints with this and 3 of them required thinning. Get yourself a viscosity cup, know how to use it and you'll thank yourself in the future.

      Technically I guess it could, but I don't think I would use it to paint a car. I don't know anything about the types of paint for a car. Lacquer should not be used so if car paint is anything like lacquer then don't use it with this sprayer. Also I'm not sure if you can get that perfect of a finish with this over metal. Best to get a sprayer that list vehicles as an option.
