Thanks Brad, I am looking to do same job on my 2018 BC 37 also. Can’t wait to see how yours turns out

Great video. I did not know the sealant needed to be replaced on Back Cove yachts. Nice use of multi tool.

Glad it helped! Eventually all boats will need exterior sealants replaced. The replacement interval will vary depending on factors including the material used, depth of the seam, and environmental conditions.

What sealant did you use? You were going to talk about it in the next video but there isn't a Part 4. Great job. Thanks

I used Pettit AnchorTech UV Resistant sealant. Surprisingly only 1 tube was needed for the job.

Thanks Brad. Any reason you didn’t use a flexible epoxy to permanently seal to joint? I was thinking Total Boat Theoflex

Yes, a bunch of reasons actually. I've used a couple of Total Boat Thixo epoxy products and they are great in the right application. Using it as a caulk is not a good application, IMO.
The Thixo Flex is really a glue meant for structural applications. Epoxy, even the thickened type, is pretty messy stuff. The types I've used would be quite hard to tool to get a good finish bead. None of the Thixo epoxies dry to a white color that would match the existing gelcoat. The Thixo Flex in particular dries to an opaque light brown that Total Boat calls "buff" - not a good match for white gelcoat. Epoxy is also often NOT UV resistant, becoming more brittle and changes color in sunlight. Total Boat does not state anything about UV resistance, but this is a general property of epoxy.
To sum up, seam sealing isn't a good application for an adhesive epoxy.

I’m looking at used 37’s and it’s very disappointing to hear that this type of work needs to be done on that year boat and such an expensive boat. That original seem in the corner looks like it was done horribly in the factory! Thanks

What you see in the video was NOT done at the factory. I bought the boat in brokerage and noted some wear and separation on the seam. Knowing this has been an issue for other owners I had the dealer recaulk the seam as part of the sale. I think either the material or technique used led to the failure of the joint.
