My dad was a machinist at Rockwell and helped build them. I remember seeing them fly overhead many times. It was my dad's favorite aircraft.

Mark Stewart my dad was in the united States Marine corps. He was a mechanic and an instructor on the OV-10 Bronco. He was in the first class to be taught about the OV-10. Excuse the expression but that air plane was my playground for a while. When I was 7 my dad had permission to let me get in one, I was up close and personal. From then for about a year or so I would play pilot. I wish they would re fit it update it and put it back in service.

Good memories! I remember being in junior high at Sembach AB in Germany when my father was stationed there. ISAF OV-10’s were based there in a FAC role. Because of that, a squadron of A-10’s was always forward deployed there as well from their base in the UK. So I had the dual benefit of seeing both aircraft flying around the area every single day. Thanks for the video!

This is great to see after so many years. I remember when I was at Takhli Thailand in '72, and one of them came into the base for some kind of work, but whenever he approached the runway, he flipped it upside down the whole length !! I definitely had to ease on over to the plane and tell him thanks for the show 👍🇺🇸

This plane was a forward air controller in Vietnam and was the replacement for the Cessna O2-A. Its mission was to find ground targets and mark them with smoke rockets so they could be bombed. Ground troops feared the FAC planes as they knew if they shot at them and gave away their positions then a very nasty response was soon to rain down on their heads. For this reason FAC planes were not often shot down as the best thing to do when one started loitering overhead was to hide.

Had a Captain in the Marines in the early 80s who flew one of these. He said he loved these planes and they handled well. Had a large framed photo of him flying one about 5,000 (?) feet up, it was on the back of his office door. He was standing in the pilot's seat with his ass pressed against the window. Hence the phrase "pressed ham".
I really hope he is doing well, he was a good man.

There are at least two flying close air support over Syria as we text. They were brought out of mothball storage to gauge their suitability in a modern low intensity conflict. They are cheap, durable, effective & have the ability to loiter over a battle for ten +/- hours with auxillary fuel tanks.
The air force will never accept their redeployment, they are almost perfect for the mission,a re to cheap,to available & to .effective.US Air Force would rather use the F-35 for CAS duty as they cost $ 135 million ,each ,plus their maintenance costs are :1 hour flight time = 6.75 hours maintainous. Why for every 5 hours of F-35 maintainance you can you could purchase a Bronco. A Bronco may use just about any transport fuel, can land on very rough unimproved airstrips,be maintained by fewer ground crew with common hand tools.Replace a
turbine in one hour,para-drop supplies, six paratroops,or medevac two casualties on stretchers plus an attending medic.Try doing any of those with an F-35 or F-16.!!
Nope makes excellent sense therefore Congress & US Air Force will decide to do the complete opposite of common sense .It's in their nature apparently.

Funny how people think if these things as being slow pokey planes because they always conpare them to jets but they are clearly hot little turboprops, way higher performance than most anything on the civilian market. And inside its speed range it is far more maneuverable than a jet, especially if the era it was created. And most people don't realize there is a cargo and passenger compartment in the fuselage which is cool.

I wonder how these would do with a centerline thrust configuration like a skymaster (o-2), with those turboprops spinning in opposite directions, cancelling the torque, and making engine-out on takeoff a non-event.. once at cruising speed and altitude, shut down one or the other, use almost half the fuel, still make 200 kts . That would also put a lot of stuff in the way for targeting the rear facing engine, and make the forward portions of the boom arms available for weapons, sensors, countermeasures, even weaponized lights !?!? Hehe ... lastly, moving those engines and props inboard would make for snappier roll rate, I would think..

There has been discussion about the need for a prop driven CAS platform for at least the last decade. F-15s have been flying for over 45 years, so I don't see why airframes like the OV-10 can't be modernized and put into that role.

There are no stupid questions, just weird answers. This Bronco is a former German Air Force plane and is now privately owned in France. So this plane has spent its whole life in Europe. It only lost its former German livery.

In 2016 the Ju-52 was a regular plane at most Airshows in Germany, doing sight seeing flights. I think at this Airshow there were four of them. So nothing special to see, but a Bronco was really rare. Now, this has changed, there are two Broncos in Europe and only one Ju52 airworthy. But you can find some Ju-52 videos from other events at my channel.

One of the many victims of the jet jockey mentality in the US military the need for such aircraft has never lapsed it's just been filled by foreign made junk ! We have always had quality aircraft unfortunately the mentality of our leadership has been driven by men who ignore the true needs of the services ,that's the reason it's taken so long to get a replacement for the A-10 into the works and that on multiple occasions the jet jockeys have tried to scrap the few A10s we have in inventory! Not every thing needs to cost a billion dollars a copy and require 50 computers to stay in the air! The country would be better served with quality aircraft that can be kept functioning by your average conscript aged airmen,Not a fellow who has to have a fck PhD from MIT!
