I love the Sky Raider, it's a fantastic aircraft, and to think that a piston engined aircraft was carrying out CAS tasks in the age of aircraft like the F-4 Phantom in late 1960's is unbelievable.

What impresses me, is the engine used was the same one on the B-29 Superfortress, no wonder this thing could fly with all the ordinance it had!

....we got covered by the "Spads" out of Pleiku all the time working Dak To, Ben Het, and Dak Seang West of Kontum in 1970. When a couple of Charlie Models or Snakes wouldn't do it...the Spads and A-37's helped out. Fabulous airplane! "Stick" Gator 11, 119th AHC, An Khe/Pleiku '69/'70

Jack, my father was a Dust Off pilot flying out of Pleiku in 67-68. He was shot down a couple of times during that time and found one of his best friends in the form of a Sky Raider pilot that gave support to his survival. They remained friends until his passing . I have quite the soft spot in my heart for that beast of an airplane.

Huey doesn't have the range or ordinance (and can't loiter). A-10 is great against hard target but flies too fast for close close air support. A-1 would compliment both in a ground support role.

The space behind the pilot was enough for ten people or for bringing patients to the MASH units and Cargo as well what an incredible aircraft and the Skyraiders was a blessing to the troops as the name denotes it was a beast against ground targets and utilities aircraft, and like the gentleman in the comments said it was sheer bliss when it came to knocking out machine gun nests and taking out enemy infantry .I love the seemingly simple lines but of course it all had its purpose and was a instant hit the brave pilots who flew them and she could get you back...Skyraider my favourite aircraft

In my top 10. Ed Heineman holds the spot most aviation enthusiasts have for Kelly Johnson.
I like to think of the A-1 as the inspiration for the A-10. Both excel at CAS, loiter time is awesome, built like a tank, tons of ordnance, when taken out of service the replacement doesn't do a good job, kept in service forever well past initally intended because no real solution.
If you take two Heinemann designs the A-1 and the A-26, throw on turbofans stir it up and there's the A-10. I know the GAU-8 is another beast all together but with features I posted above (the A-26 has a lot of those as well since it was in US service into Vietnam as well) and look at the firepower the A-26 had, things like
    eight .50 cal. or
    two 37mm cannons or
four .50 cal and a 37mm cannon or
a 75mm howitzer and two .50 cal. or
    75mm and 37mm cannons.
All forward facing, in a changeable nose cone. That's a lot of concentrated firepower and I think Ed Heinemann is the grandfather of the A-10

You can't really tell how big the A4 really is, until it's got a pilot in the cockpit or people standing next to it, it's a pretty big Aircraft. Meaning the other USN jets are even bigger and must land on a carrier day or night, sun or rain

The Pentagon wants light attack turboprops to preserve the expensive jet fleet in uncontested air for anti-insurgency ground support. What could this plane do fully modernized with new engine, weapons system, armor. Far more than a Tucano in every aspect and still cheap.

I wonder why they used oil?

    • @coniow
      @coniow 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

@Kathleen Shaw They also used some radials as Tank engines. Standard startup procedure was to remove the bottom-most spark plug, then turn over the engine to blow out the oil. Failure to do this would cause a hydraulic lock on that piston, resulting in a broken crank shaft. Apparently this was not uncommon after the war, where untrained folks tried to start up abandoned tanks. Museums could get hold of tanks without much problem, but most needed a new crank shaft.

I love how the Germans always sound out the designations of an aircraft. He called it the "Ahn Skyraider", or AN Skyraider, in the US that would always be A-N. They had the "Ju" , the "Me", and others. Always wondered what they called the Fw or Bv aircraft, did they say "few" or did they just always call it a Focke Wulfe?
Just occurred to me that AN is exactly the same as the abbreviation for Antonov and he said it exactly the same way, so maybe he just doesn't register that is not the same thing or could be said differently?

My favorite piston-powered plane! Flew low and slow loitered for the VC over Khe Sanh!

I live in a Navy town, I used to hear the clatter of the Skyraider's radials overhead constantly, back in the day. The Skyraider is credited with shooting down two Mig 17 jets during the Vietnam War. A dinosaur in its own time, but too versatile to retire. One of the great airplanes of all time.

Wow that was so remarkable sir. Those pilots are the Skyraider Aces. For a turboprops versus jets.

Thunderbolts, Skyraiders and Warthogs, the Close Ground Support aircraft, will always be my favorites. Lots of engine power, lots of armor, big guns and heavy loads.

A nod to the P-47 and the Pacific-era Radial Engine aircraft in the design of this one.

I was crew chief on A1E Skyraiders in Nam and Thailand. Pilot let me fly it for about 30 minutes over Manila Bay in Philippines. We did these maneuvers. Quite a thrill.

In doing so, the missions and tasks of this aircraft admire the pilots for completing the mission.
    Perfect Invader!

The number designation is wrong, AD4N was a 3 Seat Night Fighter version, the one In the one in the video is an AD1 Skyraider. nicknames Spad, Or Sandy.

All French Skyraider were AD-4N, maybe it has now the paint of an A1. Even the owners website tells it is a AD-4N. Found a englisch history summary of F-AZDP here: www.touchdown-aviation.com/flying-legends/plane/amicale-jean-baptiste-salis/douglas-ad-4n-skyraider-f-azdp.php

Listening to a Skyraider idle on the flight deck reminded me of the same sound at a drag strip listening to a Funny Car or Rail idle. The flight deck is one of the most dangerous places to work... very noisy without MIckey Mouse ears! Jet exhaust and props! We had a kid walk into a prop, which ended his young life!

What a tragic incident, unfortunately a high risk on a carrier's flight deck!

Was a zorro crewchief. A lot of good work was achieved with this lion. Sar missions. Macvsog troops of the 5th SF got their butts saved by A-1s taking fire and trolling for fire to take out the bad guys OLAA out of Danang did great job. Bunch of stud pilots flew that bird.
