- The 2024 Mahindra Thar is a MIGHTY 4x4 that starts at less than $20,000...
But it's also not in Australia (for now...) You see, the Mahindra Thar can't be sold in Australia because it resembles the Jeep Wrangler a little too much. However, considering both stem from the Willy's JEEP of World War 2, it's hard to say the Thar doesn't have a right to the same heritage.
Today, Jacob's in Chennai, India, to review the Mahindra Thar and PETITION to bring it one day to Australia!

I had a 2012 Thar for many years. I say these things are pretty bulletproof .... From sea level to 17600 ft .... Across any terrain.

Jeeps are just showbiz. The moment they kick the dust...all sorts of warnings go off... reliability should be compared to a Mitsubishi Pajero or a Toyota Land Cruiser. Everything else is just waste of time.
When it comes to reliability you won't have any problem with a Mahindra.
I don't understand how could fiat own monopoly rights over the design even though Mahindra is making them since 1940s. Could anyone share the legal angle?

Pretty sure Mahindra only had license to sell Willys jeeps inside India and while Thar is a MUCH upgraded vehicle, Stellantis still challenges the resemblance. Judging by how they are pursuing this, I feel they don't even care about any plagiarism but are just scared to lose their market share.. :|

Jeep Wrangler is about 62lakhs INR whereas Thar starts around 10lakhs INR to 23lakhs INR which has slowed the sales of Jeep Wrangler.

For those who don't know, there are 2 Jeep families running parallel since the first Willy's Jeep was introduced in 1940's. One is the US family now owned by FCA/Stellantis and other is the Indian family owned by Mahindra. Mahindra started out in 1949 by assembling Willy's CJ2A under license. Then in 1953, they bought full rights to make, modify and sell Jeep CJ3B in their own name, in India. They even had a temporary licencse to use 'Jeep' brand name, which expired in late 1980's. So Mahindra has been continuosly making and evolving Jeep based products since last 70+ years. Every Mahindra body on frame UV is an evolution of Jeep CJ3B. Unlike Jeep/FCA, Mahindra's focus has been on reliability, durability and being VFM. That's why FCA fears Mahindra. But with gen 2 Thar, Mahindra did copy the exterior aesthetics of Jeep Wrangler. Now both Thar and Wrangler are kind of cousins since both of them share a common ancestor in Jeep CJ3B. But despite the high demand, Mahindra cannot sell the Thar anywhere else in the world. Because they own rights only in India. They could have done things differently, but they chose to copy Wrangler's design aesthetics, which is not agreeable.

@@shiajinn2509 That maybe the OG low bonnet Willy's CJ2A. But in 1953, Mahindra of India and Mitsubishi of Japan bought rights to Willy's high bonnet CJ3B. Mitsubishi made their version till 1998. Mahindra has kept on making and evolving CJ even till today. CL500, CL550 Major, Commander, Marshal, Classic CL340, Armada, Thar, Bolero, MM440, MM540, MM550 so many products that Mahindra directly derived from CJ3B.

I had booked both and almost bought the Jimny, ultimately got the 4*4 diesel with MLD after I heard the Jimny’s launch price, obviously manual & black, looks great with matt ppf and wrangler grill and lights 😍

The diff lock is at the rear diff, it's an automatic diff lock available in the Thar diesel LX variant.
As an Indian let me just say, photos and videos don't do justice to the look of this vehicle. This looks awesome in person and has a great road presence especially the maroon one.

I own a top of the line diesel automatic and its an absolute beast which I use as a primary go anywhere vehicle. I love this beast with an mHawk heart inside more than anything. 😃
Jeep shouldn't have the right to monopolised a basically open-source design. They know the Thar is a Jeep-killer if it gets a launch.

I asked the safari guys in Thar desert about the new Thar, they said
"Its a very good road and hard surface car, but not for thar desert, since the radiator is placed low, so when you drop the car in sand dunes, radiator breaks. Tata safari and Tata harrier are good, old gypsy is great." Those guy were handling it pretty rough.
Too bad they haven't launched this beast in the UAE. It's already in my to buy bucket list.

Nah indian taxes are much much more ridiculous, It would be much cheaper in Australia ... most likely Mahindra would assemble them in Australia itself. Imported cars for example are up to 300% more expensive than in their country of origin, thats why Germans brands like Mercedes, Audi and BMW all assemble in india itself.
If you want to buy the cheapest car in India the taxes alone costs over 100%. It includes GST, Cess, and Road tax specific to states. I own a Suzuki Baleno. The price without taxes is about INR 400000. On road without insurance was about INR 900000. Insurance is about INR 20000. This is for cars made in India. You guys are living the dream. Why do you think many Indians wants to come to your country!

Interior is rugged because its totally washable including speaker section, plus the window buttons are in the center cos you can remove the doors easily

Maruti Suzuki failed big time in Jimny marketing more than pricing.
They should have branded the 5 door Jimny as the Gypsy just like the earlier model. The 2nd Gen Suzuki Jimny LWB (SJ410, later SJ413W) was sold in India since 1985 and was extremely popular with the military and the paramilitary forces, so much so that inspite of the discontinuation of Civilian models in 2018, the armed forces got their new Gypsies till 2020. Maruti failed to capitalise the nostalgia and heritage, unlike what Tata did with their Safari. Gypsy has a cuit following. People are ready to pay ₹7L-₹8L for stock-restored Armed forces disposal vehicles. Why won't they pay ₹14L for the Newest gen, that too a much, much better off-roader than Thar is? We all know what happened to Suzuki Samurai in the States.
