Three years later, DC and Marvel are bleeding numbers, but at least they’re resetting the movie universe for DC.
It's always hilarious to remember this film after reading the "Your nuclear weapons are useless earthlings" line from DC Challenge.
1987: Jon Cryer plays Lex Luthor's nephew.
2019: Jon Cryer plays Lex Luthor.
He's come a long way in his acting career.
And he's actually pretty damn good at being Lex too
I had my doubts, but by the end of the arc, he was Lex. (Unlike the actor in BvS).
The major problem with bvs is the enemy of all cinema lazy writing.

Him waltzing into the UN and saying "hey, i know whats best and i am acting on that notion, everyonewill ceasefire or i will intervein" was one of the first things in year one (end of the second issue if anyone wants the exact place to find it) and it was made pretty clear that was a bad thing

That Allison bit at the beggining was really charming. You can pretty much see Lewis smiling as she says shes gonna steal his stuff.

I love how Linkara gives Superman and Clark Kent slightly different voices so as to show how Superman does make an effort to hide his identity with more than just a pair of glasses, and yet with Batman and Bruce Wayne he just gives both the "gargling marbles" voice.

This movie may have been terrible, but without it, we wouldn't have Jon Cryer as Lex Luthor in the CW Supergirl series. And holy hell, is he MASTERFUL in the role.
And, yet, the irony is the finale of Supergirl (season four) was entitled, "The Quest for Peace".
My folks have a clock that chimes "I Did It My Way". I can never return home now without thinking of Lex Luthor every hour.
legit love the scene when he meets with Smallville Clark and tries to be as intimidating as he can be and even tries to use Kryptonite on him.
only for Clark to explain he gave up his powers, throws the Kryptonite away and tells Jon Cryer that he is no Lex Luthor.
it's an awesome and hilarious moment because of how well both actors sell it.
I love how they left out all the scenes of regular people breathing/talking in space. Like even that was too silly for them to try and adapt.
Like in the deleted scene with Jeremy at the end, he wasn't wearing a space suit.
And it wasn't until this moment that I realized why Jon Cryer was cast as Lex in Supergirl. I had *completely* forgotten about Lenny.

Superman the last Kryptonian.....besides his cousin, dog, radioactive garbage monster, phantom zone prisoners, super computer cyborg, future child with Lois, etc.
You know, the "Nuclear Man is solar powered" idea could have worked more... if they had based it on how Superman gains his powers from yellow sunlight. Because of how some versions of Superman can store up the energy he gains from the yellow sunlight for later use when no longer under it, that could then be used to explain why Nuclear Man can't last long when he is no longer in yellow sunlight. Because he was made to be stronger than Superman, this unintentionally creates a design flaw in him, that makes him burn through his reserves faster than Superman.
at least that's what i think could have been done to better explain Nuclear Man's weakness.
I like it too, honestly. It's sort of like a Hummer vs a Monster Truck. Sure, one's more powerful than the other, but it's burning a helluva lot more gas to dominate.
3:59 though one of the aspects that people loved about Christopher Reeve was that he looked so much like comic Superman.
As well as the fact how he differentiated Clark and Superman, like how people logically might be fooled by the disguise
It also depends on the artist,some draw him fatter and some draw him slimmer
Movie Superman was already very close to the comics aside from Luthor, so drawing it more realistically wouldn't make sense.

I like that the ex-Channel Awesome people are still doing crossovers and staying in touch.
Yeah, before..well, all that stuff went down, what I liked the most about the crew is that they really felt like a group that interacted with crossovers and cameos rather than just a bunch of disconnected reviewers.
It feels like they’re still part of the same group, just without Doug and possibly Brad.

In regards to Superman killing, there are two (technically four) deaths I'm completely fine with being part of Superman's lore.
The first is Doomsday.
The second, and most important, is General Zod (and his two henchmen). In the original comic, Superman gave them a formal execution by Kryptonite after they'd murdered an entire planet and were going to do the same to Earth. Why am I okay with Superman killing Zod? Because it wasn't easy for him to do and it haunted him for years. Killing someone should not be so easy to do that it's just a casual action for a superhero. It was something Superman felt he needed to do but was not happy he had to do, and that action fueled his future desires to never have to kill again.
It ironically shows how precious life is to Superman and in my opinion is a very mature way of handling superheroes killing. Unlike Batman, whom has psychological trauma as the reason he doesn't kill, because he's afraid he'll never he able to stop, Superman has killed before and is willing to kill again ONLY if there's no other way, and he does everything he can to find another way before that. It's why I don't like the Injustice version or the Justice Lord version of Superman, where killing is just the easiest thing in the world and it's done almost gleefully. "I killed someone, now I are evil!"

This was why I was initially okay with Superman killing Zod in "Man of Steel," because it could have opened up more conflict possibilities with the character... or at least it could have in the hands of more competent storytellers.
You forgot to mention how in the comic, Nuclear Man didn't take Lacey into space whereas in the movie, he did. It's another significant improvement as it shows that the comic creators at least did their science homework!
You know linkara... the only reason christopher reeves would play Superman again in this flick would be to have him come up with the plot which caused the whole “supes solving nuclear war” thing.

Indeed. If you notice the credits of the movie, he's actually the one who wrote the story. He was a big anti-nuke activist back then. So, of course, this story comes from that, but suffers from a lot of naivete.
@@Dreadjaws And by botching the nuclear warfare lesson, the movie unintentionally succeeded in teaching a lesson about the dangers of trying to ham fist a solution without thinking things through.
There is a bit of logic to the idea that atomic escalation has gone further than either superpower really WANTED it to go, and that they might be willing to 'turn back the clock' somewhat, whilst still maintaining existing cultural rivalries.
But the movie does ANYTHING BUT a decent job or showing or selling that.

Yeah, pretty cool in a sense.
You see, Superman is indeed the last "true" kryptonian. He stands for everything what made Krypton great, while places like Argo and the Phantom Zone grew resentful of the old ways.

This comic better contain the little-noticed error that when Lex cut Superman's hair with a pair of hedge-clippers, it wasn't the iron ball that created a circular hole in the display case, it was the shattered glass hitting it first.
I'm surprised that you didn't mention Jon Cryer's portrayal of Lex Luthor in the most recent season of Supergirl. He was actually quite good and more than made up for his appearance in the movie.
I think the answer basically is that Lewis doesn't watch the Arrowverse, as far as I know.

Other idea they had for Superman 3 was to have Brainiac and if i remember well at the end of that movie he fights a robot. They could just say that robot was Brainiac but probably fans would get mad. But still is they should just use an actual villain of Supes from the comics, but i suppose they tough it would cost a lot.
Warner Brothers is to blame, they sold off the film rights to Cannon simply because the comics weren't selling well.
I would be interested in seeing this film's effects redone with modern technology.

Great review as ever, Linkara. Just wanted to pop in with a counterpoint to your arguments from 17:50-20:00. Just my interpretation of the details and point, maybe they'll make sense to you, maybe not.
Superman didn't consult with elected leaders, sure, but that's because he was already GIVEN their opinion. Not just once, but twice. The President openly stated that they had NO CHOICE but to continue armament, given the failure of the peace summit. And he's technically correct, depending on your personal moral philosophy. The threat of nuclear annihilation drastically shifts the stakes of the prisoner's dilemma present in international politics: if you disarm, but your opponent doesn't, the destruction they can deliver is of SUCH a scope that you are dooming millions of others to suffer the results of your choice in addition to yourself. And that's what created, in part, the ever-growing nuclear stockpile: given the animosity between the two superpowers, neither could fully trust the other to actually carry out its word, and therefore could not, morally, step down if they thought their opponent couldn't. Otherwise they'd be dooming millions to domination by their ideological opposite.
Secondly, you have the very scene you lament being cut from the UN scene: Superman is offered sponsorship by EVERY member of the United Nations. Every nation trusts Superman to speak and act in a way they support. And sure, ambassadors aren't elected officials in reality, but they are appointed by them (in democratic countries), and we know that the dramatic shorthand of the United Nations delegates is that they represent their nation's collective will.
Thus, the movie tells us this IS the will of the people, they simply haven't had the ability to resolve it themselves because they cannot trust their enemies to act in good faith. The escalation of nuclear weapons is a matter they conduct because they have no other choice. But they can and DO trust Superman to do so.
This isn't, in my interpretation, Superman deciding he knows best and ruling the world. This is Superman providing a trusted party to resolve an issue that no one WANTED. Which he has heard from the mouths of children, presidents, the very paper he works at, and, one presumes, more. Now, could they have spent more time on this? Shown him hearing people lamenting the lack of options in the USSR and other nations, to make it clearer that this was the will of ALL peoples, not just Americans? Sure, but 1980's America wasn't always the best at thinking in terms of global unity.

Honestly though, when you realize how messy the production was and the budget being hacked away, they did as much as they could with what they were given.
Completely agree with you on that.
That can explain the effects, but that really doesn't account for the script which is ultimately the real problem with the movie. It was something Reeve insisted on in order to return to the role. It was the story he wanted to tell and it's so naive that even at 19, I had a hard time believing adults had written this movie.

Hmm, maybe the UN should be willing to work with Superman as an alternative to nuclear weapons. Perhaps they should draft some kind of accords where a UN panel votes on where and when Superman is needed to render aid and where he would not be permitted to act. That would be a brilliant idea!

Yeah I have to agree, even leaving aside Superman's bastard son he had with Lois who didn't remember the night they had him, that movie was freaking BORING.
One of the biggest reasons I'm so happy that I found your channel other than the fact that I like comics and find your content highly entertaining. But one of the other big reasons is just due to how much I have learned about comics in general. From certain artists and writers to how comics or characters were created. The most important though is learning about the heroes from ones I never even heard of before to even learning more about my favorite ones. And the one character that you got me to actually give a chance and not totally be biased towards was Superman. As I always just felt he was a way to OP character who was bland and boring as a person. Yet I learned when he's handled correctly he can be such a interesting character.
Wall repair vision has got to be one of Sups's most underrated, yet useful powers. He sure could have used that in the Batman VS Superman movie...Or the Man Of Steel movie after AN ENTIRE TOWN is destroyed cause of his fight.

I've always like the Nuclear Man. He's got a great look, interesting power/weakness dynamic, even an okay origin. He's a weird cross between Bizarro and Parasite, he could be one of the great Superman villains. Instead he's tied to this piece of crap of a movie, and he's a joke.
The cameo by Allison at the beginning was so freaking cute. I love it when you and other video makers just get to hang out and be a lil goofy.

THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!! I was waiting for someone to say that. Yes what happened at CA sucked and was completely terrible! But at the same time there were several arguments made against the site that I found questionable and/or lacking evidence. And since nobody on either side is willing to talk about it much anymore, its best that everyone (creators and fans) move on and just continue to enjoy future content (whether their associated with CA or not)

…Upshot of this movie: Morgan Freeman got an Oscar nomination. Seriously.
(This movie’s shit budget is explained by it being produced by Cannon Films, not the Salkinds. Cannon only got Christopher Reeve back by agreeing to produce a pet project of his called Street Smart, in which Freeman played a pimp. I haven’t seen it, but I did enjoy the first Breakin’ movie, which gives me reasonable optimism for it)
When Nuclear Man takes Lacy back with him I was like "I remember this deleted scene, he spins around causing lightning bolts to attack other places." Then linkara best puts it from the comic "He.... TRANSFORMS HIMSELF INTO A NUCLEAR MISSLE?!!!" My face was his reaction too & I added "Wtf was in the original draft of the script?"
