Way back when this came out, I convinced my friends that the game could make Link's sister shout his name. Their jaws dropped when I named the file HOOOIII and she totally did. :>
You know usually when people "break" a game they're being hyperbolic to convey a point. This guy fragments the game's memory. The only way he could break it any more literally is if he smashed the disk with a hammer.
I mean, you could resolder the Gamecube's RAM module to a noise modchip whose only job is to randomly corrupt the game's memory, and run the base game through a corruptor and burn the corrupted version to a disk on a system modified for allowing non-Nintendo disks to run, but, I get the point.
What Linkus brings to the community is huge. I've been watching his runs for a few years now, and at these events, he always has a good run but never lets that be an excuse for explaining things for plebians like me, while always having a fun time.
This and Gymnast's Skyward Sword run are definitely some of the wildest runs this gdq. I love Gymnast's polite claps and deep, deadpan 'hoooiiis'. The pausa will be sorely missed, but goddamn the memory corruption glitch is one of the coolest things I've seen at gdq.
I don’t mean to diminish any one particular runner, but Gymnast is one of my absolute favorite runners to watch. Super talented and incredibly committed to his work. Respect that.
Linkus and Gymnast provide great commentary, it's clear they have pretty solid knowledge of the game which IMHO is a sign of passion and I appreciate even more. The cheering after the last zombie hover actually gave me chills.
I'm shocked how robust the engine and scripting seem to be. If there wasn't enough memory for critical objects or even whole cutscenes, I would have expected an almost immediate crash.
@@globalistgamer6418 I'm assuming it's one of those engines where the crash handler is instanced per object and per script. That way, if any object or script crashes, it's only that piece of the game that stops running, instead of the whole game. Basically the same principle as how an operating system like Windows handles crashes, where all processes are isolated in their own running space and can still continue as normal if another process crashes (instead of getting a BSOD). In this case, each entity and script in the game can be seen as a process. As long as the critical engine code itself doesn't run out of memory trying to load a map's basic geometry, and you don't get softlocked by a cutscene, loading zone or map script failing to continue to the point where it gives you back control of Link, you can still continue. It's not even memory corruption anyway. It's a memory leak followed by just the right fragmentation.
Man, such an amazing and technical speedrun, props to linkus for pulling it off. Props to gymnast too for being there to help out in little things that help out making the run more safe.
I have never seen a Crowd praying so much for the runner. This was intense. Good work Linkus! And thanks to GDQ to allow this. Wonderful run, nice to watch and much to discover
Holy crap, I can't believe Linkus put all that together in a GDQ run! There is so much that can go wrong in that run, and he killed it. Good job Linkus!
watched this run a few years ago and it's stuck with me ever since - it's one of the most memorable speedruns i've ever seen! and today, i just beat wind waker - the first time i've ever played a game specifically after seeing it at gdq, and also my first zelda game! and now i can appreciate the run so much more, now that i have the context and know just how much you can sequence break. so grateful to linkus for introducing me to the amazing game that is wind waker :)
It's so cool what gdq has put together and managed to grow over the years. It's awesome seeing these runners breakdown and destroy our favorite games all in the name of charity..all the donations, the community it's just an awesome thing❤ thanks gdq for existing
It's honestly amazing how this game and skyward sword are faced with almost completely opposite style challenges from the designers and yet both are still being overcome by runners.
I haven't been paying much attention to the progression of the WW run since that one dude found Barrier Skip in the HD version. So finding out that its possible in the GC version is a nice treat But that warp into Fortress 1 with the Moblin spawn inside the submarine is everything to me rn. Edit: I JUST SAW THE MORTH HOVER AND IM SCREAMING Edit: ZELDA GIVES YOU INFINITE HEARTS?!!!?!?!? IVE BEEN PLAYING THIS GAME FOR YEARS AND NEVER KNEW OMG
This run is totally nuts 😳 it is so impressive how much knowledge of the game's memory and design goes into breaking the game in order to bypass areas. Incredibly impressive 👌
1:03:50 for the wind waker randomizer fans from season 1. 'Spider Pig. Spider Pig. Does whatever a Spider Pig does. Can he swing from a web. No he can't he's a pig. Look out here comes the Spider Pig.'
I had NO IDEA you could smack puppet gannon's third (worm) form in the face to get it to stop. I spent AGES getting the three required shots while it was moving full speed!
He didn't have the bow at that point, only the quiver upgrade. He got the bow right after the Phantom Ganon fight, when you would normally only get the Light Arrows.

Gotta love Linkus

When they were laughing with Ganon
Way back when this came out, I convinced my friends that the game could make Link's sister shout his name. Their jaws dropped when I named the file HOOOIII and she totally did. :>
Whoever was doing those fantastic "OOOiiiis", you are my hero
It was me!!! Oooooooiiiiiiii! Ok it wasn't really me.
Linkus was as skillful as ever,
Gymnast was as chill as ever,
And the crowd was as loud as ever.

Well you could do that but I mean, who wouldn't, right?
Year late reminder that running code written from within a game is possible with nothing but glitches...

Ganon starts laughing at 1:11:11.1 exactly into the run. I think this is a sign.
1:12:00 on TH-cam for those that read this comment and share my experience lmao

Using memory fragmentation to remove progress blocking elements :D brilliant! This run is very interesting on the technical side.
I'm shocked how robust the engine and scripting seem to be. If there wasn't enough memory for critical objects or even whole cutscenes, I would have expected an almost immediate crash.

Any Zelda game being ran by Linkus is a good run.
Can't agree more ! He is super knowledgeable and makes the run very easy to follow

Linkus is one of, if not the most, entertaining runner(s) that comes to GDQ.

the ending is so wholesome..much love to the runner!
Linkus is clutch at every trick.
HUGE EPILEPSY WARNING FOR THIS RUN
Super fun commentary from Linkus, and great run!
Somehow this game still looks awesome!
Memory corruption in Wind Waker be like _"7 is the key"_
7 deku tree head loops. 70 grappling hooks. 7 Superswim travels until reaching the fairy

I am super impressed!

whoever did the OIIII’s really served us dessert with that OI Gannon laugh

Is this Wand of Gamelon?
That was awesome.
Wow so now HD isn't just way faster anymore. They seem similar in speed but different in how they are run in some ways. Cool.
Something in me knew that this was a speedrun to watch...and I was right. Mind-blowing glitches happening here.
Sleeping for a while then getting up and breaking physics
OIIIIIIIIII!!!
i cant believe i missed the live run >.< oh man nvm i thought this was a week ago but it was one year ago xd
I wonder what would happen if you try getting the master sword after the game gives it to you in this speedrun.
No one:
Absolutely no one:
Crowd: OIIIII
How did you get the mirror shield and the master sword
Triforceofdoom speedrun
are you able to use storage glitch only in the JP release?
@@Rhino1004 storage works on all GC versions but not in HD
wait, so why didn't Linkus use his bow/arrows to hit the barrier from far away and save time having to do the barrier skip reset?
At that point he only had the quiver upgrade. He didn't get the bow until he got the light arrows.
He only had the quiver at that point, getting light arrows gives you all the bow upgrades at once if you didn't have them before.
He didn't have the bow at that point, only the quiver upgrade.
He got the bow right after the Phantom Ganon fight, when you would normally only get the Light Arrows.
Because he doesn't have the bow at that point lol
