I hear scott talking about how this game has so much science in it but I think I have to disagree. I like these kind of games (I used to play pandemic 2 in a browser) but the strategy that always ends up being the best is so dumb. Infect everyone and then all the infections in people SIMULTANEOUSLY EVOLVE (which makes no sense at all) and people who don't have an understanding of evolution go on thinking that makes sense. It makes evolution seem absurd and it's not how real disease works either so it's not teaching about the spread of disease in any meaningful way either.

My friend said No, because the planet moves faster then any asteroid, and.. Well.. I think hearing that gave me a mild case of cancer.

You wouldn't be launching it so much as nudging it so that its orbit ends up intersecting with Earth. That would probably involve sending probes with big honking engines and attaching it to the asteroid in the right areas, and burning in the right direction. However, there's two main issues: 1. Even a slight miscalculation could make it miss Earth entirely. In the grand scheme of things, Earth is a minuscule target. However, any tampering at all is dangerous because its new orbit is more likely to impact us at some point in the future, but not when you intended. Remember, you're not 'throwing' it at Earth in a straight line, you're just changing its orbit. So it's going to keep coming back around. 2. It would probably take too much energy to change an asteroid's velocity to be feasible. You might be able to nudge a smaller asteroid, but it wouldn't do as much damage. If we're talking about some kind of evil genius holding the world hostage by threatening to move a extinction level event causing asteroid, he's gonna have to deal with a serious catch-22: the bigger the asteroid, the more likely it is to kill lots of people, but the more difficult it is to move. We might be talking less attaching rocket boosters to an asteroid and more setting off several massive nukes in the right part of the asteroid, but imagine how difficult that would be to get just right as it would have to be. +Thomas Carrigan As someone living in the US, I am more than aware of this and I'm fortunate to be in a job that gives me good medical benefits. Although the other side of this is I never started my own company because I'd have had ended up with no medical insurance.
So, what alot of people don't really know, that on the bacteria, you just need to be agressive. Evolve some symptoms at the start, the best should be cysts, rash and the stomach thingy, which i forgot what the hell is that called, get the stuff like cold resistance and drug resistance and bird transmission, then it depends on what you want really, so the later you evolve some transmission or abillities is up to you. Then just wait and based on the cure progress, because your disease is pretty severe because of the symptoms, you will get alot of points, so you can slow down/stop the cure pretty efficiently. In the end, just get stuff like total organ failure, necrosis or coma.
Best strategy is to stay hidden as long as possible, in other words avoid symptoms until you're ready to drop the hammer. Madagascar is the best location to start from as it has little traffic. Great job at killing everyone, Scott.
The death counter also keeps track of people killed in other natural disasters (earthquakes, floods, etc). Since there's no births or deaths (or at least a perfectly balanced rate), you could win the game in theory by just letting it run a stupidly long time until the RNG kills everyone off. Bonus points for anyone who actually tries this, lol.
I notice this game has at least two SCP viruses in it. SCP-632 and SCP-217 (Referred to ingame as "The Clockwork Virus). I'd imagine SCP-217 would be extremely hard to play, what with everyone suddenly turning into steampunk robots and shit.

The game counts external deaths as well: You had an earthquake earlier in the game; those casualties count on your behalf too, therefore you had some deaths, although you'd evolved no symptom traits at that point.
One thing I prefer in the flash versions of the game is that there was a chance of the cure failing, possibly affected by how much you change your plague while the research is happening.

good tip do not devolve any symptoms as the higher your severity the more DNA you get. stealthy is slow and more often than not does not work as you run out of DNA.
Interesting game but deeply flawed. Having studied immunology, haematology and epidemiology, I couldn't help but notice that trick you played of changing the symptoms and virulence factor would not be effective at all. If everyone is infected with say, chicken pox, or cyromegalovirus (CMV) for instance, they are immune to reinfection with that same pathogen, and others like it. Therefore they would not contract the more serious strain of your bacillus, so Bad Steve would be the one to go extinct, while 'Good Steve' would protect humanity. And perhaps give them some mild discomfort, and possibly kill some people with compromised immune systems, much like CMV sometimes does. That's why blood banks screen for it. If a healthy person gets it though, they get symptoms similar to mononucleosis and recover in about a week.
I used to play this all the time. The thing that eventually turned me off to it was the randomness of the amount of DNA points you get from one game to another, and how that ultimately decides whether you will win or lose regardless of how you play. In other words, if the game doesn't give you enough DNA points, you _will_ lose no matter what.
I played the browser version some time ago. I liked it but it seemed like there was really only one way to play- go infectious, stay low profile and then go lethal. Is there more to it now, or is that still it?
Scott, I'm not sure if this was already posted, but the 1,200 that died first were from the "natural disasters" mentioned in the news ticker. It's always bothered me slightly that they include these in the death count.
Symptoms (at least the non deadly ones) aren't really directly caused by viruses and stuff. It's the body's response as it tries to get rid of the virus

One thing I prefer in the flash versions of the game is that there was a chance of the cure failing, possibly affected by how much you change your plague while the research is happening.

good tip do not devolve any symptoms as the higher your severity the more DNA you get. stealthy is slow and more often than not does not work as you run out of DNA.
Interesting game but deeply flawed. Having studied immunology, haematology and epidemiology, I couldn't help but notice that trick you played of changing the symptoms and virulence factor would not be effective at all. If everyone is infected with say, chicken pox, or cyromegalovirus (CMV) for instance, they are immune to reinfection with that same pathogen, and others like it. Therefore they would not contract the more serious strain of your bacillus, so Bad Steve would be the one to go extinct, while 'Good Steve' would protect humanity. And perhaps give them some mild discomfort, and possibly kill some people with compromised immune systems, much like CMV sometimes does. That's why blood banks screen for it. If a healthy person gets it though, they get symptoms similar to mononucleosis and recover in about a week.
I used to play this all the time. The thing that eventually turned me off to it was the randomness of the amount of DNA points you get from one game to another, and how that ultimately decides whether you will win or lose regardless of how you play. In other words, if the game doesn't give you enough DNA points, you _will_ lose no matter what.

I played the browser version some time ago. I liked it but it seemed like there was really only one way to play- go infectious, stay low profile and then go lethal. Is there more to it now, or is that still it?
Scott, I'm not sure if this was already posted, but the 1,200 that died first were from the "natural disasters" mentioned in the news ticker. It's always bothered me slightly that they include these in the death count.

Symptoms (at least the non deadly ones) aren't really directly caused by viruses and stuff. It's the body's response as it tries to get rid of the virus
