If they're doing it for the benefit of the American audience, it seems to me a waste of time: as an American I can say there are plenty of people here familiar with the basic concepts. I wonder if RTD is trying to undo the chaos wreaked on the Doctor's backstory over the last few seasons. If they wanted to drop the accumulated baggage, there are ways they could have made a proper and complete break. Spending all that time in the Toymaker story emphasizing continuity makes it difficult to think of this as starting over in any meaningful sense. On the other hand, if this is something imposed by Disney, RTD may just have to live with it.
I think we needed this reboot because for the past 14 seasons we only saw the doctor dealing with the aftermath of the time war: breaking the laws of time, jumping head first to stop multiple wars just because of his own guilt, he even lost many companions because of his very own guilt. He became so reckless and emotional at the wrong times, up until Jodie's incarnation where the doctor has started developping serious attachement and communication issues and didn't have any moment to process that her entire existence was a lie and that very existence wiped out half of the universe. But now Gallifrey stands, the doctor knows his past and has access to the truth whenever he pleases, and he's spending time with his best friend's family just to heal and let go of those recurring problems. I think this is a chance to explore new dynamics with the doctor and possibly other timelords just like in the classic series, as we haven't seen anything like that in so long. The revival had a job to portray the time war and the psychological baggage it left the doctor with and it has gotten stretched long enough. Looking forward to see what new big arcs will be develloped with this reboot.
So this comes up as suggestion and I, of course, click. To start, I'm not ecstatic about this new season / era either. I'm not against it, just, like you say, it "doesn't feel right" It feels like a new line up for an old band; they're playing your favourite songs, but the magics not there anymore. Trying to relaunch the show like this is a quiet admission that things weren't going that well. Viewership was down, the writing was lacklustre and no one at the BBC had any better ideas than to hit the reset and call in the the guys that made it popular almost 20 years ago (yes, it was that long ago 19 years since Eccleston. Think about that!). Despite this I can't be excited for it, even with the much better budget and a great cast. I'm not against Ncuti or Millie, but the Time Lord and a contemporary blonde companion that's more than she appears? Again? I just want to see something new.
I think and it might be wrong. That neither Peter Jackson or J Micheal Straczynski would be very enticing to the BBC because none of them will play ball. In that the BBC might want the Doctor to go in a even more far left way, advocating THE MESSAGE, over actual good story telling. I think both Peter Jackson or J Micheal Straczynski would tell the BBC to go pound sand. And honestly i think that´s what Doctor Who needs someone who files every request for THE MESSAGE to take priority over good story telling and characterization, right into the paper shredder.
I don't mind this reboot. I feel it is necessary to sometimes wipe the slate clean. As Doctor Who has always been about the next doctor. The next adventure, the new and the beginning of something. That is what makes the show appealing. As Doctor Who has been so many things and has had loads of different approaches taken in its storytelling. I am personally looking forward to Season 1 as Russell isn't just going to ingore the past (like for God sake - Mel is going to be in the finale). Instead this Season 1 reboot - rebrand feels like a breath of fresh air. As Jodie Whittaker's first season felt like at the time. I think it is necessary for the show and the central character to now drop the baggage of the 60 years. That doesn't mean they shouldn't ingore it. But they should acknowledge it instead and not feel burden by it. But of course Russell and his team will do this. As you can only play on the main character's trauma of the time war and the flux do much. Until it all gets too much for the fans and for newcomers. The baggage makes it harder for new viewers to join on board. As they won't understand x,y and z. And it will throw them off. This very concern was the same battle that Series 1 had to deal with in 2005. But what Russell did with Series 1 in 2005 was amazing. What he did made the show popular. As you didn't to watch the show of yesteryear. You didn't need to go back to Totter's Lane in 1963 to start the jounrey. You could just pop right on in with Eccleston. And people did. I get the concern that there hasn't been much of a gap between Jodie's time in the TARDIS and this reboot. But I feel like this is what Doctor Who does all the time. Look at Series 5. Look at Series 10. Whilst they didn't label themselves as a new series 1. You could jump on at that point. And people did. The fact is Doctor Who is a brand. The team of course want to make fans happy. But their primary audience is new viewers and the general public. Now I use Star Trek as an example. As personally. As someone who isn't a fan of the franchise and for a lack of a better term - someone who considers themselves as a "new viewer". I get daunted and struggle to get into the franchise as there is so much content. So many episodes and so many shows and I just get lost in the noise of it all. New viewers will be like that with this series if it was labelled as Series 14. As the notion that 13 previous seasons have taken place prior and a further 26 seasons before that is daunting. Because this new Ncuti era will be reaching a more global and worldwide audience (VIA Disney+). Russell is offering a comforting hand into the world of Doctor Who for those type of people. This is supposed to be a fun show, not a heavy in-depth show that requires research in order to watch it. The whole premise of the show is that you can watch the series at any moment, any episode any Doctor without the baggage. As keeping the trauma and the baggage too much and for too long will just alienate people. This is a show about an alien who travels in time and space with a human by their side for fun. It is a weekly romp. A hoot. It is escapism for the family. It is supposed to be an educational kids show. But the whole premise of the show is that it changes weekly. It changes location, its genre, its story. Each and every week. Personally, I take on this reboot as Doctor Who has always been like this. Always changing and always rebooting. The show isn't just for the fans. It cares for its fans. But this show is for anyone and everyone to watch at any moment and any point. It's a show about compassion, of hope and joy. And about doing the best you can and trying to be the best version of yourself each and every day. That is the character of The Doctor deep down. That is what Moffat understood. The Doctor isn't defined by the trauma and the history of the show. But, instead by their actions and who they are and who they try to be. Just sometimes taking note of the past and acknowledging it makes the show and the character moreso. But the show, the character and the people watching at home shouldn't feel burdened by it. As holding onto the past too much makes it harder to move forwards. So I fully endorse this warm hug by Rusell as he said in The Star Beast/The Church on Ruby Road press conference - he wants to make this reboot a place where people can have a good, fun time each and every week and escape to. To escape the bleakness of the world. That doesn't mean we shouldn't ingore bad things, have dramas on TV etc. But the world needs that positivity more than ever. As our media is constantly reminding us how dark and terrifying it is out there. And it is. Look at Palestine, look at Russia, look at the wildfires, the homeless on our streets and the trans hate out there. Like the world is a sad, unfair, chaotic place and if you take it all too seriously and look at our world for what it really is. I mean it is a joke. There is no justice, there is no rules. No logic or fairness or balance to how our world works. The world can be cruel place at the best of times. This isn't to say the world isn't a beautiful place. But life can be hard and chaotic. But Doctor Who has always been a show of hope, love, compassion and community. It is about people. It is about us. It is about the best of humanity. Because life is tough but also it can be amazing at the same time. And the show represents this fact. It guides us through the dark. And whilst there is life, there is hope.
The fact that it's Disney and it's supposed to be linking to American audiences is what sickens me. The corporate mouse never cared about us. They only NOW started refusing involvement with a very hateful governor, with their park in Florida VS. Ron DeSantis (AKA Big Bigot Number 2), so the fact they're vying for their LGBTQ+ audience? I'm sorry, but the mouse lost my respect years ago, and I refuse to pay a corporation that even Tim Burton hated the second chance he was granted by them. The Americans are already not respected by basically being thrown out of the Tales of the TARDIS loop, so another poor decision like this is why there's no viewership. Disney+ was already losing viewers as it was. You would've had more success with NBC, or a decent Valve Videogame!
I really liked what you said here tho I feel like it's just more of a rebrand but I wanna watch at least the first five eps of the new series before coming to a conclusion. Still gonna call it series 14 tho.
Well how is this different from the Third Doctor being earthbound. What? No more space stories and travelling back to periods in time? It will destroy the essence of Doctor Who? Or what about when that became a beloved part of the show's history and then he set off on adventures again and left the Doctor Who 'family' of the Brig and UNIT behind to only have very occasional appearances in the future. Or when Gallifrey suddenly appeared and was explored and rewrote the history of Time Lords. Rather than standing at consoles or popping out of mid air in bowler hats, they were now in fancy robes and were bureacrats. Outrageous I hear you cry! You could pick endless number of instances. I was around and actively watching from this period. And while I always loved the show, I'm not going to try and convince you that Timelash or Time and the Rani were far superior to what we have now. Because they weren't. I have a soft spot for those stories as well but change is good. There were stories during 13's run that I was really disappointed in. However, there were also enjoyable ones. And like previous eras, I will rewatch the ones I enjoyed and avoid the ones I didn't. I think Ncuti is terrific so we will have to wait and see what comes next. I just gonna be honest cuz i don't care about hurting people's Feeling's because its the truth. I just absolutely freaking HATE how ridiculous Shitty-Gatwa and RTD is on About Identity politics especially on the first 60th anniversary episode. They basically nostalgia-bait the fans to beat you over the head about the whole LGBTQ Agenda that nobody gives a crap about. My mother and i Actually watched season 1 of Doctor with Christopher elcostosten For the very first time [which i never seen] And i Actually sobbed my eyes out on the Father's day episode. And I NEVER cry in movies and shows and that got me. I actually had to leave the room because how heart breaking the episode was. See The different is, that back then people want to Write a good story but in the modern world days the show has to be political over everything and they just want to send a message rather than tell a good story. I am working onna Doctor Who REMAKE fan series to prove a point even tho its probably gonna be stupid Af. Im just sad that the doctor is pretty much black washed and poisoned by the message. Next in line of the Woke agenda is Pirates of the Caribbean, with Johnny depp being replaces by a black Woman. A woman. Just like how Disney made The little mermaid made the Male character feel like a total loser while Ariel dominants the movie. [Not to mention she looks nothing like the cartoon character cuz shes black with dreads.] Just like how in snow white they maid the Beast character act like a creep to woman. Just like how indiana Jones they made Jones look like a total weak moron because the Obvious Evil Like Biritsh Girl has to dominant Men in the show. Just like now with Doctor, They made The doctor look like an Idiot because Jason-Who-just-so-happens-to-have-a-dick says so. And ofc hes trans and has to let people know this actor exist. Just like how Captain Jack Harkness's character worked, and the Jason-Who-just-so-happens-to-have-a-dick, Didn't. And the fact that people say that doctor who has always been woke is absolutely absurd.. I dont understand why people dont realize this kind of crap sucks the fun out of everything for everyone. But whenever we tell the truth, we hurt people's feelings, so we get called a Racist or Biggets ,ect. It really sickening how drastically the show changed comparing the old and now especially now its on ugh- diesny where kids are exposed to these kinds of topcis. Im not being toxic. Im just Telling the truth 🙌.
yeah wokeism has absolutely destroyed this franchise. but i guess I'm used to it by now there isn't one franchise i loved that i won't drop if it goes woke. I've dropped marvel, DC, Star Wars, Star Trek, Dr Who. thats why i mostly stick to anime and manga and if they go woke ill drop that too
@mayotango1317 awee sure I didn't. Just never the new one. OH WAIT. I have and *F ME* the episodes were utter garbage. Go cry about it, RTD is garbage and even Christopher elcostosten thinks RTD is crap now. DONT belive me? You should definitely watch his most recant interview! And watch other videos! Im sure all this will make sense to you! :)

My mother and i Actually watched season 1 of Doctor with Christopher elcostosten
For the very first time [which i never seen]
And i Actually sobbed my eyes out on the Father's day episode.
[Not to mention she looks nothing like the cartoon character cuz shes black with dreads.]
Just like how in snow white they maid the Beast character act like a creep to woman.
I've dropped marvel, DC, Star Wars, Star Trek, Dr Who. thats why i mostly stick to anime and manga and if they go woke ill drop that too
I think you never really watch the show. RTD never change, is the same.

@@GoneFishin82ueje837uw Eccleston has been a vocal support toward ncuti gatwa and towards Jodie Whittaker as a doctor, and he did praised RTD's writing before. His comments toward RTD are not about his writing but about workplace abuse, which Eccleston faced during his filming of series 1.
He's a vocal support toward feminism, queer and poc people
